Women’s Institutes of Vaughan
The Women’s Institute, now a global organization, was founded by Mrs. Adelaide Hoodless (née Hunter) in 1897, with the goal to build a better nation by building better homes. The primary ambition of the organization was to educate girls and women of an Anglo-Settler background about sanitation, economics, hygiene, the value of food and fuel, and the more scientific care of children. These groups were responsible for carrying out charitable projects and compiling local histories of their communities, known as “Tweedsmuir Histories.”
