Photograph of Pte. Leon Joseph Coward of Kleinburg on the bridge while Sir Arthur William Currie salutes the 2nd Canadian Division along the Rhine at Bonn, Germany, n.d., M988.7

Before the outbreak of World War I, members of the Kleinburg-Nashville Women’s Institute engaged in buying and selling magazines, selling old Dutch Cleanser, collecting local histories and sharing a vacuum amongst themselves. During the world wars, they worked hard to support Kleinburg-Nashville residents overseas (such as Leon Joseph Coward), by raising funds through concerts, box socials, knitting parties and more. They also packed boxes of supplies, donated to a hospital ship, purchased a wheelchair for a military hospital and helped to provide a celebration for returning troops.
