Photograph of Elder’s Mills Women Institute 25th Anniversary, 1974, MG 22
Due to the large membership of the Burwick Women’s Institute of Woodbridge, many of whose members lived north and west of the village, the possibility of forming a new branch in the Elder’s Mills area was considered. The first meeting was held in 1949 at the home of Mrs. Garnet Williams. The Elder’s Mills Women’s Institute made many efforts to foster a sense of community and enrich the lives of community members, including engaging in philanthropic and charitable activities and the compilation of a Tweedsmuir history about the local area.
