The Vellore Women’s Institute first met on July 10, 1915, in the Township Hall. Seventeen ladies met (four of whom were still members in 1969) and it was decided that the group would meet on the fourth Thursday of every month. They celebrated their 50th Anniversary in 1965 and contributed significantly to projects such as Red Cross Work during the war years, raising money for the York Central Hospital in Richmond Hill and entering a quilt at the Toronto Exhibition.
