Photograph of Edgeley Post Office, ca. 1900, from the Edgeley Tweedsmuir History, MG 17

Officially formalized in 1944, the Edgeley Women’s Institute had longstanding involvement in the local community for decades prior to their official incorporation. Largely demonstrated by the holding of Grandmother Days, displays of old and dishes, clothes, relics and antiques, as early as 1915. Following the Institutes official creation in 1944, a Tweedsmuir Committee was organized to compile a history of the area. The process faced several delays until after the Women’s Institute Guelph Conference in May of 1950, when membership on the committee significantly grew. Since then, the group compiled rare records of the area, such as this photograph, and eventually donated their collection to the City of Vaughan Archives.
