The Vellore Women’s Institute got its start when the women of the area asked Mrs. W. O. Duncan, President of the West York District Women’s Institute, to organize a branch in the area. She readily agreed, but after a survey Mr. Putnam, the superintendent, and his staff were wary after making a survey – Vellore was very close to the villages of Maple and Edgeley which already had their own Women’s Institute branches. Mrs. Duncan persisted, arguing that Red Cross workers were urgently needed, due to the outbreak of World War I, and the Village had a town hall (pictured above), which would be an asset. Mr. Putnam agreed with her reasoning and gave his assent, leading to the formation of the Vellore Women’s Institute.
