Photograph of Marion Orr, n.d., from Thornhill Tweedsmuir History, MG 35

During World War II, the Thornhill Women’s Institute wanted to do something to support the troops overseas. As a result, they got together at the home of Elsa McNeil and made several hundred tins of jam. This activity sums up the purpose of local Women’s Institute – to help others in whatever way they can. Marion Orr, whose photo above is from the Thornhill Women’s Institute Tweedsmuir History, was one such woman who embodied this motto. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War I as part of the Women’s Auxiliary Corps, who “served, so that men may fly.”
