The York West District Women's Institute was formed in 1901, with founder Mrs. Eleanor Cruickshank serving as the first president. The organization served as an umbrella agency providing direction to local Women's Institutes and acted a liaison between the latter and the Ontario Women's Institute. In recognition of this role, the Tweedsmuir History of this branch aims to briefly document the history of other groups in the area, as well as their own. Other local groups mentioned include Kleinburg-Nashville, Elder’s Mills, Vellore, Maple, Burwick, and Edgeley.
