July 29, 2019 - I decided my kitchen needed a facelift. This all started because my dishwasher detergent cup no longer locks it broke in late June. The dishwasher was in the house when I purchased it in 1995. It is probably 30 - 35 years old so it was time to replace it. I was just going to replace the dishwasher however the previous owners put a new tile floor in which blocks the dishwasher from being easily replaced. I was never content with my kitchen the only work I have done to it was to replace the original drop-in oven which didn't work when I bought the house and the matching harvest gold exhaust hood was replaced with a white exhaust hood. I painted the walls yellow in 1996. The oven I bought in 1995 died in March 2018 so the oven is only a year old. I also replaced the kitchen faucet last August. I thought about just maintaining the faucet but decided to upgrade to a faucet with a pullout sprayer.

I engaged KitchenSaver to replace the cabinet doors and drawer fronts, countertop and sink. I want the kitchen to look brand new so hired a contractor to strip nearly 100 years worth of paint off the pantry and basement doors, door frames, window, window frame and sill and repaint the woodwork and walls. The contractor will also be installing wood base since the base was removed by a previous owner. I am also installing a Subway tile white backsplash which will go up to the bottom of the wall cabinets and on either side of the window.

I am a retired architect and it was fun getting back into design. I knew exactly what I wanted and took me no time at all to select everything.

I am going with an Arts and Crafts oak cabinet and drawer fronts. The wood stain is nearly a perfect match to the house woodwork and my furniture. Door and drawer pulls are bronze/copper in the Arts and Crafts style.

I also bought new light fixtures for the kitchen and dining room both with a bronze finish. KitchenSaver will be installing five dimmable LED lights below the cabinets and above the sink.

I decided to add a recycling/trash cabinet and pantry cabinet to fill in the dead space between the refrigerator and wall this necessitated the removal of the existing quad outlet that the refrigerator is plugged into. (no outlet behind the refrigerator) In order to do any electrical work in my house I had to bring the existing electrical circuit breaker panel up to current codes. Which meant I needed to replace the existing electrical circuit breaker panel. I had a duplex outlet added behind the refrigerator. With the new circuit breaker panel I now can use the microwave oven and toaster oven at the same time. What a concept! I also replaced the old fashion knob and tube light switch which controls the basement light. The old switch scared me and wasn't safe.

New window treatments for the backdoor and window. I wasn't able to find a blind which matches the Sherwin Williams Indian White SW 1035 paint color so I am going with a Levelor Cordless Cellular blind that is an exact match to the Sherwin Williams Koi Pond SW 7727 wall color.

One last improvement the contractor got paint stripper on the existing oven exhaust hood so I replaced the hood with a new black hood which matches the oven.

The Hamilton-class cutter was the largest class of vessel in the United States Coast Guard until replaced by the National Security Cutter, aside from the Polar-class icebreakers. The hull classification symbol is prefixed WHEC. The cutters are called the Hamilton class after their lead ship, or "Secretary class" because most of the vessels in the class were named for former Secretaries of the Treasury (with the exception of "Hero Class cutters" Jarvis, Munro and Midgett,). They are powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) system consisting of two diesel engines and two gas turbines, and have controllable-pitch propellers. Equipped with a helicopter flight deck, retractable hangar, and the facilities to support helicopter deployment, these 12 cutters were introduced to the Coast Guard inventory in the 1960s. Beginning in the 1980s and ending in 1992, the entire class was modernized through the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program. The program included the replacement of the original Mk30 Mod0 5-inch (127 mm)/38 caliber gun with a much more modern 76 mm (3-inch)/62 caliber weapon. The refit also included the installation of a Phalanx CIWS 20 mm gun mount, and a retractable hangar bay. The primary mission of these vessels is enforcement of laws and treaties and search and rescue (SAR) on the high seas, including the U.S. exclusive economic zone.

So, today i had an appointment at Apple to get some parts replaced. Note to all: never, ever, ever make a genius bar/repair appointment on a product release day. WHOA. the swarms of people were impressive. Because half the staff were redistributed to help with iPads, my repair took a little longer, but i didn't care as long as it got done today.

i used the time to do some spring shopping. i told myself that i was only looking for skirts, and i did find one (skirts are working well for me these days . . . can't buy pants until i know how much space the new brace will take up) but somehow ended up with 4 tops too. i also bought a pair of flats so that i have something to wear to the wedding next week.

After all that, i was hungry! My favorite coffee and tea place had this giant white chocolate macadamia nut cookie. Look at this! i had already gnawed on quite a bit of it! Officially, i don't believe in white chocolate, but when paired with macadamia nuts, i suspend disbelief. Gimme a cookie this large, and i'll tell you i believe in unicorns and the abominable snowman.

Flying Boat Slipway

In 1940, the Government decided to order Consolidated Catalina aircraft from the USA to replace the Saunders-Roe (Saro) Lerwick flying boat, which was proving to be not fit for task, due to handling issues. Delivery of the Catalinas commenced in early 1941, and conversion work was required to meet Air Ministry specifications. The flying boat manufacturer Saunders-Roe were contracted to undertake this work. Saunders-Roe produced flying boats (the Supermarine Walrus and its successor, the Sea Otter) on the Isle of Wight. This location left Saunders-Roe extremely vulnerable to enemy attack and a safer location was sought for the Catalina conversion work.

The Menai Straits were found to be an excellent location for flying boat operations, and the company purchased the Burton’s Fryars estate near Beaumaris in 1940. The Saro Shrimp was one of the aircraft that first appeared here in the summer of 1940. Saunders Roe dismantled one of their spare hangars at Cowes and re-erected it on site in August 1941. The Ministry of Aircraft Production then built a further hangar and workshops on the site in December 1941, linked to the foreshore by a concrete slipway.

For four years there were flying boats stretching from the Gazelle Hotel down to Fryars Bay. In all, 399 Catalinas came through the site. Substantial work was carried out to prepare them for various roles with both the RAF and the Royal Navy.

After the war Saunders-Roe transferred their shipbuilding operations to the site. An experimental Auster floatplane was tested at Beaumaris in 1944, 1949 and again in 1955. However, it was found to be severely lacking in power and the design was never carried forward. The firm also manufactured bus bodies for both London and Cuba. Other vehicle manufacturers went on to take over the site, which closed completely in 1997.

The flying boat slipway remains, as do all of the wartime hangars, although they have been significantly modernised.

Fleet No: "301"

First flown as an A310-308 in Jul-90 with the Airbus test registration F-WWCY, this aircraft was originally for lease to 'Europe Aero Service' (to have been F-GHGM).

The order was cancelled before delivery and it was stored until eventually being leased to Emirates Airline as A6-EKG at the end of Jan-92. It was returned to Airbus Financial Services in Dec-00.

The aircraft was immediately leased to Air Transat as C-GFAT. It was converted to A310-304 standard in Nov-09 to bring it into line with the rest of the Air Transat A310 fleet.

After 27 years in service the aircraft was permanently retired at Montreal-Mirabel, QC, Canada in Feb-19.

National Christmas Tree in Washington, D.C. replaced in spring of 2011

On February 19, 2011 the National Christmas Tree on the Ellipse in front of the White House was blown over by a large wind gust. The 42-foot Colorado blue spruce had served as the National Christmas Tree on the ellipse for more than 32 years, and was lit by six presidents in that time.

The National Park Service replaced the tree one month later on March 19th 2011.

Chevrolet replaced the long-running C4 Corvette in 1997 with the new C5. As well as all-new, but recognisable styling, the C5 debuted a number of key innovations in its hydroformed inner structure.

All C5 Corvette's had power, the initial LS1 5.7L pushrod V8 producing 257 kW (345 hp), enough to push the Corvette to 282 km/h.

There were three body styles for the C5 generation Corvettes:

A) the Coupe (shown), which featured a removeable targa-top panel, and had an opening liftback luggage area,

B) the Hardtop, which was a notchback coupe-style, fixed roof panel, and

C) the convertible.

The Corvette plant is located in Bowling Green, Kentucky, and I was fortunate to have a Plant tour in 2001. Though the production rate is relatively low, the plant is clean and modern. The National Corvette Museum is located not far way. The area is in a beautiful part of the US, and close to the amazing Mammoth Cave.

The building was commissioned to replace Sheffield's first town hall, which had opened in 1700 to a design by William Renny. This first structure stood by the parish church, on a site with little prospect for extension.

The Old Town Hall was built in 1807–8 by Charles Watson, and was designed to house not only the Town Trustees but also the Petty and Quarter Sessions. The initial building was a five-bay structure fronting Castle Street, but it was extended in 1833 and again in 1866 by William Flockton (1804-1864) of Sheffield and his partner for the project, Abbott; the most prominent feature was the new central clock tower over a new main entrance that reoriented the building to Waingate. At the same time, the building's courtrooms were linked by underground passages to the neighbouring Sheffield Police Offices.

The first Town Council was elected in 1843 and took over the lease of the Town Trustees' hall in 1866. The following year, the building was extensively renovated, with a clock tower designed by Flockton & Abbott being added.

By the 1890s, the building had again become too small, and the current Sheffield Town Hall was built further south. The Old Town Hall was again extended in 1896-7, by the renamed Flockton, Gibbs & Flockton, and became Sheffield Crown Court and Sheffield High Court. In the 1990s, these courts moved to new premises, and since at least 1997 to present, the building remains disused. In 2007, it was named by the Victorian Society as one of their top ten buildings most at-risk
