Calotip mètode Pélegry modificat (mel en comptes de xerigot), en format 4x5.; paper Canson Marker; revelat durant 10 minuts amb acid gal·lic i acetonitrat de plata. Uns 45 segons d'exposició a aproximadament f4 (EV 13.5).

Lately I have problems with my calotypes, which show a lot of marbling or fogging. I don't know if this is due to the summer's extreme heat or maybe light exposure during the sensitization. More trials to do.

Serious Backlighting, 4x5" film antique heliar lens. Having some problems with this film in both 4x5 and 5x7 as far as lots of little specks. The manufacturer says it is an anti-halation layer that is too hard, and they suggest soaking in ethyl alcohol. I did this with a different batch before, and may do so again with this batch.

Large format really shows me how easily I can become distracted despite slowing down and really looking around me. I missed a shot because other hikers wanted to interact as I was setting up a shot, and I totally screwed up and missed it since I lost my concentration. I'll go back (hopefully!) to see if I can recreate the shot. But I so value LF since it makes me more observant, and the details are just incomparable. This is the last of my expired HP5 so will need to pick up some more 4x5 - I'll be finishing up my Ultra 8x10 soon as well, so time to find deals on film! Thanks to all the flickeranians who continue to inspire!

This scan is basically straight off the scanner (scanmate 5000 drum scanner), but I originally scanned this photo with my Epson v800 and wasn't blown away by the results. I figured the photo itself simply wasn't inspiring and that I failed to capture the beauty before me at Yosemite. I was wrong, and my Scanmate 5000 revealed all the amazing details that were hiding in this negative.
I've had my Scanmate 5000 for over 2 years now and I'm continuing to learn so much about it, including maintenance items and tuning. I recently replaced the aperture motor, scsi communication board, IT8 calibration, tuned the aperture, and a number of other items. It's a pain in the ass, but the results are well worth it. Compare it with the original Epson scan, and you can immediately see the depth and detail the SM5K picked up.
As far as I can tell, one last thing is left to take care of - there appears to be banding in some scans. I suspect a dying bulb or bulb connection. Fingers crossed!
I could not have done this without the help of Pali K, the most knowledgeable individual on these scanners.
See the original Epson scan here flic.kr/p/G1TfWS.
See the drum scan prior to IT8 and Aperture calibration here, which required lots of post processing to correct colors, and it has lots of grain flic.kr/p/27rkrgH.
