Even without any knowledge of the Dutch language you can guess what "Brandweer" means. Mark how the iron capitals are beautifully crafted in a classic font, perhaps art deco style.
Excellent L&P to add to the Lines and Planes series.
It's about surprising compositions in the everyday, a special view of buildings, interiors ... lines made abstract.

I've been reading quite a bit about Nebraska lately. I discovered an author entirely new to me - Mari Sandoz - who wrote quite a bit about pioneering in Nebraska.
Another book recently suggested to me - The Sod-House Frontier by Everett Dick - is now on my growing pile of books I'll get to soon. From the looks of it, the book describes in detail nearly ever aspect of Nebraska pioneer life.
It does, however, leave out normal death almost completely. There's talk of frontier justice and murder, of coruse. But there are only two paragraphs on funerals.
I find this so strange. In the Victorian era, the rites of death were almost gleefully related. But by the 1880s all of that changed. Death moved from the home to funeral homes. Once that separation occured, death became foreign even though it is one thing we all have in common.
We all experience the death of friends and loved ones, we all grieve in many of the same ways, we all cry, we all remember those who have left us. And in the end, we all die. Yet, through so many of the books of and from this era that I've read, death and funerals and burials hardly receive a mention.
Writings about the funerals of the late 1800s and early 1900s that took place in populated areas in the East and the Pacific West are easy enough to find. They were the norm. But those taking place on the plains and prairies, within the cemeteries I photograph, are essentially non-existent. I have come across exactly zero among the journals, diaries, memoirs, and histories I've read. I'm sure there must be something out there though.
Though someone likely recorded this, their absense has left me with endless questions.
If the nearby town had no funeral director, who took care of the body? In regular houses, the funeral would be held in the front parlor (later called the "living room" for obvious reasons), what about small sod-houses or shacks? Who made the coffins and how on the plains where there were few, if any, trees? What happened to the bodies of Black pioneers who died among Whites (they were rarely allowed in the same cemeteries, though there were exceptions)?
More than anything, I just want someone to walk me through the process. I photograph the very end result of death: the gravesite well over a century after burial. I want to know everything prior to this as it happened to the pioneers.

Le château d'Anterroches est un château médiéval situé dans la vallée de l'Alagnon, dans le Cantal, sur la commune de Murat, bien que géographiquement et historiquement rattaché au Valagnon (commune de Laveissière). In Wokingham Without

Yesterday we had a road trip to Wokingham in Berkshire.
We had a tailgate dog guard fitted to our Citroen Berlingo… to keep Herbie safer when he’s getting out of the car.
It was a 460 mile return road trip.

As some of you know. I have been without a camera for some time now... each time I would think I was going to choose that next baby. A financial obstacle would always get in the way.
Awhile ago... a fellow Flickr friend made an incredibly generous offer to give me his old camera to use. Free of charge, no strings attached... at the time, I had politely declined. The offer alone was enough to bring a tear to my eyes.

I eventually decided to take him up on this wonderful offer... the camera arrived this past weekend. (and) I have a series of shots I did Sunday that I will post this week.
But first, I wanted to start my new Flickr life with a few photos featuring the camera itself... some of you may recognize it. Please check out his photostream. Brent and the rest of the gang in Winnipeg are quite special people.

Without hesitation, I decided to join this excursion tour at the port of Skagway during my Alaska cruise, when I saw its title “Skagway in Focus - Guided Photography Adventure”, hoping to explore some of the strategic photographic “adventure” spots which otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to visit on my own within the few hours’ stay at the stop-over port. I wasn’t disappointed:-)
