A sandhill crane graces the skyline on its way back to its nesting site in the marshes which lie just beyond the trees.
As you may be able to tell, I awakened the canoe yesterday and, while a bit nippy, it was good to be out. This event was not without incident. It is quite a steep drop to the water and a chore to hoist the craft up every year, turn it over, and tie it off to a tree. On the other hand, returning it to the water is quite easy as a chute of sorts has formed over the years and, once turned over, the canoe glides smoothly down into the water. All one needs do is keep a firm grip on the rope. Need I say more?
I watched bemused as the rope and the canoe went quickly down the hill and headed merrily toward the middle of the lake. I had simply let the rope slide right out of my hand. I stood there wondering what I could have been thinking, quickly coming up with the obvious answer...nothing relative to what I should have been. More importantly, I had no idea of how I was going to retrieve it with the water temps what they are and strongly discouraging wading.
After a few seconds of again cursing getting old, I realized that the slight wind was pushing it toward a spot at which I might intercept it if I hurried...that definition (like mental acuity) also changing dramatically as yet another consequence of aging. Heading toward the spot through the trees, I was pleased that I only fell once, tripping on something under the leaves, and arrived just in time to catch my escaping canoe before it headed for destinations unknown. Tying it off, I realized how truly lucky I was that the prevailing winds were exactly what they were and returned to the house for a well-deserved and necessary nap prior to this year's maiden voyage.

Great Salt Lake, Utah, USA, as viewed from the Antelope Island causeway which connects the island to the mainland.
You frequently get these impressionistic vistas of sky and water merging into one another, which probably has something to do with the salinity and calmness of this half (north) of the lake, which gets restricted circulation.
Editing this I noticed a couple of groups of birds in the distance floating on the surface (approximately at the centerline between water and sky), and it made me think of a haiku, but I don't want to compose one at the moment so for now this will be a haiku without words.
Best when viewed large as the birds are VERY tiny elements (even viewed large you will need to use the zoom tool), and the low contrast pastel tones, while pretty much true to life, make this a very subtle image indeed.

No Alaska bingo card would be complete without whale watching - or "chasing tail" as our captain called it. The deeper a whale dives the higher they raise their tail to get momentum. And whale tails are like people fingerprints - all unique and used to identify individuals. Fascinating, but hard to capture a well-composed, interesting photograph. Whale tail spray helps.

Spiegelbeeld ("mirror image", 2003), by Maria Roosen, museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Boijmans van Beuningen, a museum in Rotterdam, celebrates its 175th birthday. The current building was started in 1928, designed by Ad van der Steur, and modified several times since.
Since 2019, the museum is closed for extensive restorations, expected to last until 2029.
In a very brief moment, the museum was open with a temporary exhibition, focusing on the architecture, exhibitions from the past, and dreams for the future.

Vancouver Island is just coming out of a major wind storm.... more than 100 power outages on South Vancouver Island alone and we were without power for most of the day yesterday. It is currently snowing heavily... much nicer than a couple of days ago... and I am still hopeful for good photography in the snowy environment.... This being said... It is curious that when you feel you would have time to do all kinds of things that have been on the back of your mind for a while, is the day where you precisely can't do them... there are not much you can do without electricity.... and the moment the electrical power is back... you are too busy doing the things that were on mind when you were without … c'est la vie... These will be my last postings on Flickr for the next little while... Have fun! Wishing you all the best photos opportunities... as always...

The holiday's just another day that's cold
Standing all alone under the mistletoe
I don't feel the cheer, ooh, without you here
There's no red and white stripes on a candy cane
And Silent Night just wouldn't sound the same
Where'd the magic go?
All I know is me without you is like a present without a bow

I've been slow here on flickr these days. Thanks a bunch for your comments and faves. I'll catch up with you in a few weeks!
The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.
Sun Tzu
War is only a cowardly escape from the problems of peace.
Thomas Mann
The most shocking fact about war is that its victims and its instruments are individual human beings, and that these individual beings are condemned by the monstrous conventions of politics to murder or be murdered in quarrels not their own.
Aldous Huxley
War does not determine who is right - only who is left.
Bertrand Russell
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.
William Tecumseh Sherman
I will not play tug o' war. I'd rather play hug o' war. Where everyone hugs instead of tugs, Where everyone giggles and rolls on the rug, Where everyone kisses, and everyone grins, and everyone cuddles, and everyone wins.
Shel Silverstein
The first casualty when war comes is truth.
Hiram Johnson
If it's natural to kill, how come men have to go into training to learn how?
Joan Baez

Now is the time, she would say to herself at a certain moment, when without doing anything violent I can show the meaning of all this. And she would begin - how unmistakable that quickening is! - beckoning and summoning, and there would rise up in memory, half forgotten, perhaps quite trivial things in other chapters dropped by the way. And she would make their presence felt while some one sewed or smoked a pipe as naturally as possible, and one would feel, as she went on writing, as if one had gone to the top of the world and seen it laid out, very majestically, beneath.
Virginia Woolf, A Room of One's Own
I have already turned to seed, and I did not pollinate!! That's the beauty of me. Who said you can only see the stars in the skies? How about me? I have lot's of stars!!! Just look at me... Oh yes, I know I'm very pretty... I am the Queen of Weeds!

From a bird I wish would go away (the Starling) to a bird I seldom see - the Northern Shrike. They breed far north of my location; I only see them in migration (although once I saw one in the Ogilvie Mountains, north of Dawson City in Canada's Yukon).
Here in southwestern Saskatchewan, the Loggerhead Shrike is common. The month or two following their departure south is my best window for catching a glimpse of their northern cousin, and that was the case again in 2025. This Northern Shrike actually let me approach on foot. Maybe it felt safe, hiding behind that branch.

Happisburgh Lighthouse, Norfolk, UK
I didn't feel I could visit Happisburgh without taking a shot of the Lighthouse....esp. as the car park is so close to it. I gather that sometimes there is Rapeseed in the field and even if not you can get the tractor trails in the crop fields. Alas in February it's a pretty landscape and the best I could do for a leading line was the strip of worn path to the right of the frame. The clouds that would lead to some pretty spectacular skies were just starting to form and catch the blue hour light. I took the 'normal '3 bracketed images for the main scene but then had to take another three for the light itself and hand blended them.
Windmills and lighthouses are some of my favourite subjects to shoot....particularly in blue hour when you get the natural light but the beam is still shining.
This isn't what I would call a 'keeper' by a long way but I decided to post it anyway as I might never get to shoot it again.
Happisburgh Lighthouse is the oldest working light in East Anglia, and the only independently run lighthouse in Great Britain.
Built in 1790, originally one of a pair – the tower is 85ft tall and the lantern is 134ft above sea level. The ‘low light’ which was discontinued in 1883 was 20ft lower and the pair formed leading lights marking safe passage around the southern end of the treacherous Haisborough Sands.
Today the lighthouse is painted white with three red bands, and has a light characteristic of Fl (3) W 30s (3 white flashes, repeated every 30secs) with a range of 18 miles.
Saved as a working light by the local community, it is maintained and operated entirely by voluntary contributions. Ref. happisburgh.org.uk/lighthouse/

Yesterday I posted to Substack a bit of writing (and audio) about why we embrace the imperfections of film photography.
Few things exemplify that as much as expired film developed in ECN-2. Here, there's color shifts and probably some odd development quirks. There are white specks all over it as well, though I don't remember why.
I shot this in 2021 and developed it that autumn. I don't know why it took me this long to share it. Probably because of the specks and shifts.
These imperfections, well, looks like I haven't quite embraced them. But it's still kind of a cool photo. And a wonderful place.

Es un macho teneral que pudimos captar en el Cabezo del gato, cerca de Villena. Fue Teo Martínez el que lo vió, por la pose de alas debía haber emergido esa madrugada y allí entre cañas nos dejó hacerle unas fotillos.
