The car park at Sainsburys came as no surprise. It seemed I’d picked my moment well though, as one motorhome space had just been vacated as I arrived, and despite the mass of humanity milling over the concourse between their vehicles and the entrance to the superstore, I reversed into it without issue and went in. Here was Christmas, right in front of me, people scowling at each other in the annual bunfight for the last pack of pigs in blankets and chasing about the place in search of cranberry sauce. Does anyone buy cranberry sauce at any other time of year? When did you last have brandy butter with your eggnog in August? I was only here because neither of us had summoned up the nerve to go shopping recently, and I needed something for lunch. It wasn’t my finest ever piece of pre-togging preparation, but some time later I emerged with a sandwich, a bag of crisps, a bottle of something that was allegedly full of pulped red berries, and a fruit salad that had been reduced in price before it started to grow fur. Quite why I resisted a flaky steak pasty from the Cornish Oven just along the road, I really can’t say. I waited for a gap in the mayhem and pulled away from the car park - away from the madness in my escape to sanity.

I used to like the fact that Christmas delivered ten or eleven days away from the office, but now that I don’t work anymore, the one big plus that the festive season brings no longer applies. In fact now that almost everyone else is at leisure too, it’s merely a big noisy headache, full of the same collection of tedious earworms being played at me on an endless loop by people who claim to enjoy all of this enforced jollity. Much to our mutual relief, Ali and I have stopped buying each other presents. We much prefer to spend our money on holidays. All those anxious years of wondering “how much should I spend?” or “how many presents should I get her?” when I knew that she was having exactly the same struggle. Neither of us misses trying to guess at what the other neither needs nor desires each year. All we really want is an untapped supply of cheese and chocolate, and if one of us has a burning desire for a new lens or a sewing machine, we get it when we can afford to. We don’t miss trudging around busy shopping centres in a state of unbridled panic either. Call me Mr Grinch, but I really don’t care. This year I opened junior ISA investments for my two tiny grandchildren, my children each received a copy of “Tales From the Edge,” my photobook of stories from Cornwall (whether they liked it or not), other family members and a very small number of friends received a copy of the Dom Haughton Photography 2024 calendar (again, whether they liked it or not), and that was it. All from my PC in a safe and quiet place where no strangers would invade my personal space and reach past me to grab a bottle of Bucks Fizz before supplies run out. Besides which, we don’t have any Bucks Fizz in the house. Not even at Christmas.

Where I was heading now, things would be much more to my liking. I knew more or less where I wanted to take my shots from, and although it would only be a couple of hours until sunset, it was a place where only a few would venture on an afternoon in deepest December. And finally, after a number of foiled attempts in recent visits, I managed to find somebody who could help me register as a local resident and park here for free. If you live in Cornwall, wander into the hotel reception with your driving licence and they’ll help you save a small fortune in parking charges. Don’t say you never learned anything useful here. Well not if your home is west of the Tamar at any rate.

A few years ago I came to the cliffs between Land’s End and Sennen Cove at more or less the same time of year, no doubt for exactly the same reasons, to take a long exposure of the sunset glow, and despite somehow having left my ball head at home, I balanced the camera on top of the tripod and improvised. Somehow I got a reasonable result that day, but it was a composition I felt was worth returning to. Except I didn’t quite return to it because I was drawn into a telephoto view instead. Sheltering from a stiff breeze in the shadow of an enormous granite boulder, Longships Lighthouse became the focal point once again, as did the sense of depth offered by the waves cracking over the cluster of rocks at the edge of the mainland and the reef in between. I did try a few longer exposures, but the breaking water and the endless movement of the gulls were winning me over. Even on a relatively benign day, there was plenty of action to keep me interested, but I made a mental note to come and sit in the lee of this rock again when things get tasty out there.

Across the land to the east of me, those endless Christmas tunes were being piped into homes and bustling supermarkets, whether the occupants wanted to hear them or not, but here I was safe from the excesses of my fellow humans. And while I would have to rejoin the rest of the world tomorrow and do Christmas stuff, today was all about headspace. Personal space too for that matter - apart from the provisions stop at Sainsbury’s in Penzance on the way here. It was only later, as I opened the not yet furry fruit salad, that the sky put on a technicolour extravaganza. But that’s another story for next time.

It's been 63 days since I started the Insanity workout program by Beach Body. It's been one helluva ride!

Normally I wouldn't post pictures of me without a shirt, but this is anything but normal for me. It took a lot for me to share these with you. I'm very self conscience and have always been embarassed by my body. But no mas! ;o)

I busted my ass for the past two months. Worked out every morning at 5am. Watched my daily caloric intake like my life depended on it. Quit drinking alcohol. Cut out all sorts of sweets. In the end, the results were stellar.

I lost a total of 16 lbs. I started at 181.2 and weighed in at 165.2. I've increased my cardiovascular condition to the point where I can actually participate in a 5k run. I've toned up and look better than I have in several years. Overall, I'm just a whole lot healthier.

I'm very proud of how far I've come in a relatively short period of time. It takes patience, persistence, and a true desire to commit to a lifestyle change. But it is worth all of the effort put forth.

So here I am, before my transformation and after training my mind and body to accept the challenges necessary to achieve my personal goals.

Want to know what the secret is?

There isn't any.

Maintain a healthy diet; exercise at a moderate pace to increase your heart rate, 3-4 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes; be sure to drink 8-10 glasses of water per day; and be sure to get your full night's rest.

Most importantly, you will lose weight if you burn more calories than you take in. This is probably the closest thing to what the "secret" to losing weight is.

It doesn't take a gym membership or fancy workout equipment or expensive DVDs. You just have to want it bad enough.

;o)

We don’t need words to understand each other. He’s always happy when we meet. I kneel down next to him, and soon he sits behind me, facing the other way — so we can both keep an eye on the world and protect one another.

This is an older image form Caldwell Idaho, but seemed fitting to post. The real trick here is getting the image without the throngs of people that were there too. The dragon breathes fire, but I did not get the right kind of exposure to be able to use that image. Neat to see though.

How can it be a successful trip without a couple of best star trails pics. Startrail is now one of the things I would always try on a trip. Its a tricky type of photography, since you can only click about 2 or 3 long enough star trails in a single night, thus the composition has to be well thought and pre planned, rest have to leave it on the camera, and having a moonless night is an advantage here :), The only problem being was that in Mt Cook, the nights are very small, Sunlight starts to completely fade away by 10:30pm and by 4:30am you can see the morning hues by the horizon, that would give me a night window of only 6hrs (this shot was already 3hr:30mins of that), I was hoping for 3 long star trails (I got 2 long and 2 short startrails), but I am satisfied with what I got. I enjoyed one of the calmest sunrise in my life.

The shot above consists of 210 exposures of 30secs each @ f4 ISO800 10mm giving me 3hrs:30mins of star trail. The main difference in this pic is that the Polaris captured int his shot is the South Polaris, rather then the North one that is usually captured from India

Mt Cook being far far away from the city lights has one of the darkest sky i have ever seen in my life, giving me 10 times more stars to witness then the darkest sky i have seen in India or South Africa, Once your eyes gets adjusted to the darkness of the sky, you can see the Milky Way and a few star clusters and 3 Super novas named SN 1604 (20,000 light years away) and SN 1987A (168,000 light years), 3rd one I couldnt recognize, all this was according to Stellarium on the iphone ;) and with just naked eyes, I wish I had a telescope

The Red light beam you see in the shot was from the night vision torch I used to for keeping an eye on the camera just in case nothing goes wrong and the camera is keeping on clicking, But i wasnt aware it was included in the frame, I kind of like it this way, it gives the shot a Sci-fi feel

transgender people have courage like i have never seen in any one group of people before..they face adversaty without fear and show alot of moxie in their quest to follow their dreams of being true to whom they really are in their heart..that is something that should be admired, not destroyed.

every year many transgender people are murdered , many families are left waiting for justice..

the few following examples are quite shocking.. (these are just five out of hundreds)

.

.

Erika Keels (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; 3/22/07) Erika, a 20-year-old black transgender woman, was murdered on March 22, 2007, on North Broad Street in Philadelphia. Witnesses saw an assailant eject Erika from his car and intentionally run her over four times, killing her and leaving the scene. A medical examiner’s report supports these eyewitness accounts. But police ruled Erika’s death an accident and have refused to conduct an investigation. The driver, Roland Button, was later apprehended, but he has yet to face criminal charges–including “hit and run” charges. When Ms. Keels’ friends, who are themselves trans, questioned police officials about the classification of her death as an accident, they were asked to disclose their “birth” names and told they were “trying to make something out of nothing.”

.

.

.

Duanna Johnson, a 40-year-old African American transgender woman. In February 2008, Duanna was picked up and arrested by Memphis, Tennessee, police officers Bridges McRae and J. Swain. She was pinned down and beaten by the two men in a Memphis police jail after she refused to respond to anti-gay and anti-transgender slurs. The assault was captured on video, which aired on several regional newscasts. In an interview given to FOX 13, Duanna spoke about her experiences. “As [Officer McRae] was calling me, he said ‘hey he-she, come over here’” Johnson told FOX 13 reporters, “I knew he couldn’t be talking to me because that’s not my name.” Duanna Johnson received national media attention this past June when she went public about the brutality she suffered at the hands of two Memphis Police Officers. She became “the public face of our community’s campaign against racism, homophobia, and transphobia” according to a statement from the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center. On Monday Nov 10, according to news reports, Duanna was shot “execution style” between Hollywood and Staten Avenue in Memphis, Tenn.[21]

.

.

.

Angie Zapata was a trans woman who was murdered on July 17, 2008, in Greeley, Colorado. Her death was the first ever case involving a transgender victim to be ruled a hate crime.[23] Colorado is one of only eleven states that protect transgender victims under hate crime laws in the United States. Allen Andrade, who learned eighteen-year-old Angie was transgender after meeting her and spending several days with her, beat her to death with a fire extinguisher. In his arrest affidavit, Andrade calls Zapata "it",[24] and during his trial a tape was played of a phone conversation in which he told his girl friend "gay things need to die".[25] Andrade's attorneys used a gay panic defense, implying that Andrade suddenly "snapped" when he learned Zapata was not born biologically female. On April 22, 2009, Andrade was found guilty of first degree murder, hate crimes, and car/ID theft. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.[26]

.

.

.

Tyra Hunter (1970 – August 7, 1995) was an African-American transsexual woman who died after being injured as a passenger in a car accident and refused medical care.[1][2] Emergency medical technicians at the scene of the accident uttered derogatory epithets and withdrew medical care after discovering that she had male genitalia, and ER staff at DC General Hospital subsequently provided dilatory and inadequate care.

.

.

.

Gwen Araujo of Newark, California (died October 2002), an American teenage trans woman, was killed by four men, two of whom she had been raped by, who beat and strangled her after discovering she was transsexual.[7][8][9] Two of the defendants were convicted of second-degree murder,[10] but not convicted on the requested hate crime enhancements. The other two defendants pleaded guilty or no contest to voluntary manslaughter. In at least one of the trials, a trans panic defense - an extension of the gay panic defense - was employed.[10][11]

Many thanks to those who have already supported this project in the first 24 hours. There is still a long way to go, but with your help we will succeed!

John Berger said in his famous BBC series from 1972 "Ways of seeing" that the most important thing about paintings themselves is that their images are silent, still. The project PLACES WITHOUT NOISE came precisely from this. That the most important about those photographs was that they communicated something totally different from what they represented. These photos were no longer a window that showed me a memory or a moment already lived, otherwise they are an open door to a new and unknown place.

Thanks for supporting and sharing!!

Located at 16°30′0″S 68°08′0″W (−16.5, −68.1333), La Paz is built in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River (now mostly built over), which runs northwest to southeast. The city's main thoroughfare, which roughly follows the river, changes names over its length, but the central tree-lined section running through the downtown core is called the Prado.

The geography of La Paz (in particular the altitude) is marked by social differences. The more affluent residents live in the lower, central areas of the city southwest of the Prado. Many middle-class residents live in high-rise condos near the center. Lower-income residents live in makeshift brick houses in the surrounding hills.

The satellite city of El Alto, in which the airport is located, is spread over a broad area to the west of the canyon, on the Altiplano. La Paz is renowned for its unique markets, unusual and dramatic topography, and traditional culture.
