The house may look like a 19th century Italian palazzo, but in reality this house began as, and still is, a research institution and it was inaugurated in 1933 under the name Scuola Romena di Roma. The house is designed by the architect Petre Antonescu.

This is one of several institutes and academies, focusing on research in the humanities that can be found not just in Rome, but this part of Rome. The neighbours are Academia Belgica, Reale Istituto Neerlandese, Istituto Svedese di Studi Classici (where I was staying at the time), Accademia d’Egitto di Belle Arti and Accademia di Danimarca - and The British School at Rome is at a close distance (as are several others). But while most (if not all) of the other institutes have worked continuously as just that since their founding, the Romanian Academy has had a more diverse history. It was completely closed 1947-1969 and left to decay, and when it reopened it was as a Romanian library and culture centre. After 1989 it renamed itself Accademia di Romania a Roma and in 2005 it was re-admitted into the official organization for the foreign research institutes in Rome.

One of the most charming things with Rome, especially in the summer, is all the lovely fountains found just about everywhere. This is Fontana del Fiocco (also known as Fontana di Esculapio - meaning the fountain of Asclepius, and fiocco is Italian for bow or ribbon, but it is also a last name. Not sure about the ribbon-aspect here). It was built 1830-1834 by Luigi Canina. It can be found next to the busy road going through Villa Borghese - but it was partly closed off this day so I was in no danger photographing this, normally you don't mess with Roman traffic.

The Brain—is wider than the Sky—

For—put them side by side—

The one the other will contain

With ease—and You—beside—

The Brain is deeper than the sea—

For—hold them—Blue to Blue—

The one the other will absorb—

As Sponges—Buckets—do—

The Brain is just the weight of God—

For—Heft them—Pound for Pound—

And they will differ—if they do—

As Syllable from Sound—

Emily Dickinson, ‘The Brain is wider than the Sky’.

Photographed the Razorbills on Gull Island part of the Witless bay Ecological Reserve on the coast of the Avalon Peninsula in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador Canada

The striking black-and-white Razorbill nests in cliffside colonies overlooking the ocean, often among murres, fulmars, and kittiwakes. It uses its sharp, hatchet-shaped bill to catch fish underwater, sometimes diving to 330 feet. Chicks leave the nest before they even have flight feathers, jumping from their cliff ledges into the water far below. The male parent follows along, minding the chick in the water until it can forage for itself. In winter, Razorbills gather in large flocks to feed, often fairly near to shore.

Tulips (Tulipa) form a genus of spring-blooming perennial herbaceous bulbiferous geophytes (having bulbs as storage organs). The flowers are usually large, showy and brightly coloured, generally red, pink, yellow, or white (usually in warm colours).

This Octopus we found in the Basel zoopark.

We've noticed there's been a lot of King Fisher pictures uploaded recently., which is great to see

And also something of a relief

Having endured a hideous cold spell at the back end of last winter we began to wonder if these stunningly beautiful birds were about to become something of a rarity

Mortality rates at the time were reportedly high

It's true to say that some 'classic' locations have sadly been without their colourful superstars this summer., but happily the majority still have their little 'fisher birds' in residence., and often with youngsters to boost their number

Let's hope the coming winter is a little kinder

Could you imagine a world without them?!

Thanks for looking, comments and faves. Much appreciated!

We got out for a hike yesterday. The weather has been remarkable for Florida in May! Cool breezy mornings and the start of Summer rains, but without the humidity. This deer was enjoying the new growth from a past controlled burn. Myakka River State Park in Sarasota, FL.

(The blue pillows are part of wedding preparations which were going on when we visited.)

The mosaics behind the altar is perhaps one of the most famous from late antiquity / early medieval there is - dating from the 5th century. It depicts Jesus in the middle in golden robes with the Torah in his hand. St Paul is to the left of him, and St Peter to the right. The twins Cosma and Damiano are standing behind them, one on each side (though it is impossible to tell who's who - they are depicted as identical twins). To the far right is St Theodore - and to the far left the founder of the church pope Felix IV, holding a model of the church. Felix is actually a reconstruction (but generally thought to be well done) since a later pope replaced him with a portrait of pope Gregory the Great(!). Felix was restored in the 17th century.

The church Santi Cosma e Damiano was founded in 527 by Theodore the Great when he and his daughter Amalasuntha donated two buildings to pope Felix IV - the buildings being the Temple of Romulus and the Temple of Peace, built by emperor Vespasian. These buildings are the foundation for this church. Today it is hard to see how it is possible - standing in the church you can, through a window, look down into the Romulus temple. But this is due to the in the early 17th century the floor in the church was raised with some 7 metres and a new entrance was made - and left the temple of Romulus back at (the old) ground level. The same renovation also added new side chapels and a new ceiling.
