This is Five Points, a cocktail created at Death & Co in Denver, Colorado and published in the Happy Hour Handbook in 2020 (see note). The drink's namesake comes from the Five Points neighborhood in Denver which is also where Death & Co is located. This is a spirit-forward cocktail that uses a split-base of reposado tequila and mezcal. This base modified by two bitter elements, Punt e Mes and Amaro Nardini. Punt e Mes is unlike a lot of sweet vermouths since it is significantly more bitter, even to the point of sometimes being considered an amaro. Nardini is an amaro with only three botanicals (bitter orange, peppermint, gentian root) and does well to harmonize the agave spirits and the Punt e Mes. There's a bit of walnut liqueur which is a type of addition that is hard to notice, but evident when it's missing. The Xocolatl Mole bitters always goes well with agave spirits and really puts the finishing touch on this drink. For a drink without a lot of "age" in its spirits, it drinks a lot like smoky and complex Manhattan.

1.5 oz tequila (they use Tequila Ocho)

0.5 oz mezcal (they use Del Maguey Vida)

0.5 oz Punt e Mes

0.5 oz Amaro Nardini

1 tsp walnut liqueur also called nocino

2 dashes Bittermens Xocolatl Mole bitters

Combine all of the ingredients into a mixing glass. Add ice and stir until arctic cold. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass like a Nick and Nora. Garnish with an orange peel.

Note: The Happy Hour Handbook is a compilation of cocktail and appetizer recipes collected from Denver bars. All proceeds from the book sales go to support the restaurants that contributed during this difficult season.

At least I hope that is the case... I sure do LOVE my coffee in the morning :)

Today I took some coffee beans from the office (don't tell my boss!), and decided to experiment a little bit, with the lighting and also with the composition in this kind of shots.

Strobist:

Actually this was a very simple setup. I used two Elinchrom BX500Ri but only modeling lamps (not strobing). Each light was on the left and right side of the table/setup, inside a large strip softbox. Camera was on tripod and shutter speed was quite long, for this shot 1/3sec.

Behind the scene setup and more photos from the shoot can be find here: t.co/nQAiCykNdP

Just a snapshot outside with my wife and a softbox... ;-)

I used a 60cm softbox cam right with a 580EXII in ETTL mode. Triggered with YN-622C.

this is taken w/ a 50mm 1.4. the apollo softbox has a 580EXII in it triggered with Pocket Wizard TT1.

it was taken in the dining room with a distracting background so I used the pocket wizards hypersync capability to black it out. (1/400th)

It was much easier than setting up a backdrop

also I recently purchased the OnOne suite so this was also the test run for that.

A cheap Ebay softbox 60cm x 60cm with a homemade adaptor to enable me to use one or two speedlights, also packs up nice and small for transportation.

Shown with two speedlights, held together with a good old ball bungee. I haven't worked out if they will get too hot being held like this but have designed it so I can seperate them a little (probably with a some heat resisitant material in between) and still fit through the softbox opening.

Softbox just above camera, bare strobes on both sides of the subject, slightly behind subject.

My daughter wanted to play but it was late so we had to make it quick. Turned out quite nicley anyway I think.

Brought out the softbox and had it on camera left and slightly above her very close.

Used two textures to give it a little bit of a painterly feel.

The shot was taken with two Elinchrom studio lights. One with a soft box on and the other with soft umbrella.

mom used to work as a nanny to three little girls. These shoes are the first pointing shoes for the eldest of the three. mom wanted to give a memento to her so she enlisted my help. These two photos are some of the result.

The DIY softbox is doing a great job. My wife thought it was a bit hokey when I built it, but now thinks it's pretty frickin' cool. I'm liking it too.
