Stick the "loop" side of the Velcro to the underside of the flash head. For peace of mind, invest in a high quality hook-and-loop fastener like Velcro which has good adhesive. (For more peace of mind though, I attached a 'lifeline' to the flash, which is just a piece of cord with one end fastened to the assembly and the other to a thick rubber band, which can easily be slipped around the neck of the flash).

The "precarious" way the flash is mounted onto the assembly is intentional and not due to careless design. It is mounted this way so that the body of the flash can be twisted so that its light sensor has line of sight with the camera. I use a Nikon D80 which acts as the master flash unit and an SB-600 Speedlight which acts as the remote flash unit. The SB-600 needs to see pulses of light coming from the camera to be triggered wirelessly. (If you can afford PocketWizards to trigger wirelessly by radio, I'm sure you can't be bothered to make a DIY softbox :-).

First real soft box experiment, my eldest son Evan poses for a pic. No flash involved just the 2 soft boxes either side, 300 watts each at slightly different distances.

Emotion is important in photography.

Pictures say thousands of words.

I finally rigged up a speedring to my old video softboxes that I can shoot a flash through. Fun stuff awaits.

Now I need to get a way to trigger a second flash for some fill or some rim lights.

First work in the studio. One soft box light off to the left. Macro 105 lens. f/5.6. SS - 1/90. ISO 100. Grey background.

This shows the contribution from the soft box on the right.

This is to see how much the light is diffused. Maybe I'll put another bedsheet into the mix, but it performed pretty well when I tested it out.

Acabando de comprar una caja difusora, decidí probarlo con mi gata, fue la afortunada a primer prueba, aquí el resultado.

Very high aperture, lowest ISO possible, low flash power. How good is it?

Far from perfect, but it's still diffusing most of the flash light over a 12x12" area, which is a vast improvement over the 1x3" of the flash head!
