This is my DIY softbox, which is mostly made of scrap.

It's made of a piece of choroplast, a thick strip of aluminium, a cheap flash/umbrella stand, some screws and nuts, aluminium foil and tape, white duct tape and black adhesive paper. The diffuser is a piece of translucent paper with small stips of velcro.

I had all these materials laying around so... why not? The total cost of the project was... well... nothing! Everything was either going to the garbage or simply not being used.

I already used this softbox here, here and here.

It's not ment to be portable because it wouldn't be very practical anyway.

Strobist info: one flash on each side of the camera, facing away, bouncing off the walls. One of the flashes had a YongNuo trigger and the other was in optical slave mode. All the photos were shot with the same setup, with only small variations in power and direction (can't remember the details... it took a lot of trial and error).

My new toy ... the 65 cm Firefly II softbox. Works great, and I love the brolly-like construction. You have that baby out of the box and running in under a minute!

Ok, I hope this video can answer all of the questions about how I attach my flashes to my softboxes. This is not a tutorial. It is a demonstration on how I use the equipment available to me. I also discuss my method of focus on self portraits and give a tip on lugging equipment. If anything, just watch the last minute of the video, it made me laugh.

DIY Softbox with Flashpoint 5500K light

Shit happens, because things happen when stuff happens.

This was taken a while back at Canyon Creek Ranch in Arizona during a workshop with the Arizona Professional Photographers Association. Between session there was time to wander around the movie set village on the ranch and take pictures of the Western themed art.

This is a metal sculpture of a sheriff, and it was difficult to light with a single strobe in the bright sunlight, particularly since I was using an 8.6 inch Lastolite softbox which absorbs two stops of light while softening that same light. I used camera setting that caused the sunlit background to go a little dark and then lit the subject with the YN560-III on full power, and positioned in front and to camera right, as as close to the sculpture as I could and keep it out of the frame. The flash was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N. Basically, I was trying to overpower bright sunlight with a single strobe.

Other images that I took during the day long workshop at Canyon Creek Ranch are in my Canyon Creek Ranch Album.

So are you a Strobist or a Flasher , what is the correct term , I got asked today . . . and not even 2 seconds after that I had the idea for this shot

You see I do agree with my friend , I mean it makes sense , you use flashes (he said) right ??

So if you use flashes you are a Flasher , right ??

So I told him nope . . . the word is Strobist , so to all my fellow Strobist or Flashers out there , keep on doing what you are doing , because Chicks dig Flashers

I've restricted myself to one light without any other modifiers than my new softbox. Tomorrow I think I might add areflector and maybe another strobe :) Taken in indoor daylight conditions with the softbox positioned in a way to not cast any light on the background
