Small and old tarnished silver whistle. Lighting inspired by Brian of www.flickr.com/photos/macro-merriment/49881114708 His lighting and experiment with his new softbox kicked me out of bed this morning.
Not sure how the silver chain’s bokeh balls (above) appear on top of the whistle. If this is a physics thing, don’t try to explain ;-)
Lighting: two lights on stands triggered by off-camera strobe. Softbox prevents bright hot spots and bounces light all around the whistle.
Off briefly for our grocery pickup--a trip in the car!

This is an invasive weed in North America - but a dang pretty one. I found a small stand of these in the neighborhood prairie restoration so I cut a few down for some photography. The remaining stand will disappear shortly. This section is slated for a prairie burn this spring.
Technical: Amazingly, this picture is uncropped (I always crop a little). There were some tone adjustments so I can't call it SOOC. AB1600 at 1/16 power in softbox on right, foam core reflector on left, triggered by Pocketwizard.

Another bash at improving my product photography. This time with an additional prop. I still have a long way to go before I'm happy. I'm limited these days by space so everything is done in a Heath Robinson fashion! I'd love a proper studio with proper lights instead of standing on one leg whilst holding foamboard, diffusers, flashes and remote controls!
I've had to comp together the bottle and the glass. This lighting effect could not be achieved in a single shot.
I've used as single YN560IV speedlight. For the bottle: Flash in a 24" double diffused softbox to the rear. Approx. 18" away. A further diffuser was used just behind the bottle to give a more gradated rim light. This hasn't quite had the effect I wanted! I cut from a piece of black foamboard a slightly larger shape of the bottle and placed this behind. Then 2 larger pieces of black foamboard placed left and right of subject to control the glare from the softbox. Speedlight triggered via YN560TX Full power @ 24mm. I then used the same flash with a Rogue grid attachment to light the label. 1/128 @ 24mm.
The glass was filled with water and a few drops of red food colouring. Same set up as the bottle but with a much lower flash power. 1/32 @ 24mm.
PP included masking the label frame into the bottle then compositing it with the glass. I'm quite comfortable with the camera/flash aspect of these shoots but PS work still blows my mind.....
I also need to inspect my purchases closer for wonky damaged labels. Hope it tastes ok tho :)
Still, it's much better than sat in front of the gogglebox having your brain fogged by a soap opera!
Sometimes simple is better. Just two SB910 were used to this picture. One on camera right with 20x20 softbox in TTL mode at 0 FV, and one on camera left for hair light with DIY snoot in manual mode.
The DC ring was at R/2…
I know, I know... it's pathetic. But I was all out of ideas, and I went to the trouble of shooting it - so thought I may as well upload it...
It worked better in my head :-)

I was walking into the grocery store the other day and they had a whole lot of mmmmuuuummmmmssssss on display. Tucked in a corner were a few of these. I looked at them and almost grabbed one, but I started going into the store. But then I heard, "Hey mister, take me. Take pictures of ME!"
What could I do?

I wanted to try to create an image with different layers of light throughout the frame. While the final image looks relatively simple, I built the scene piece by piece using different flashes. Could I have gotten the same image by using a longer shutter speed and burning in the ambient? Not really. Each strobe is positioned to strike a surface in a particular way to achieve a certain emphasis or color. When you control every aspect of the scene, you can create whatever scene you like as you have limitless possibilities to alter each minute photon hitting the scene. Is it a work of art? Far from it. However, the lightning makes the shot much more interesting than it was without it.

Vivitar flashes triggered via Cybersyncs. WL triggered via optical slave. Setup shot here.

This is a large shell that I borrowed from my sister to exploit. It's about 6 inches in length and 5-1/2 inches in width at the top. I know almost nothing about shell identification but, that being said, I think it might be a Cassis madagascariensis (emperor shell).
Lighting stuff: I placed the shell on a mirror to reveal the extra dimensions that the reflection reveals. I wanted to emphasize the folds and shapes so I used the side lighting that creates shadows and reveals shapes and textures. This was a one light shot with a YN560-III in a 24 inch softbox at camera left. Fill light came from a a small hand mirror at the right side that bounced light onto that side of the shell. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
I have photographed quite a few shells over the years, and if you like this sort of thing, they're in my creatively named Shells album. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157626043932290
