If you don’t have any shadows, you’re not standing in the light.

Thank you for watching, kind regards,

Christophe.

Small and old tarnished silver whistle. Lighting inspired by Brian of www.flickr.com/photos/macro-merriment/49881114708 His lighting and experiment with his new softbox kicked me out of bed this morning.

Not sure how the silver chain’s bokeh balls (above) appear on top of the whistle. If this is a physics thing, don’t try to explain ;-)

Lighting: two lights on stands triggered by off-camera strobe. Softbox prevents bright hot spots and bounces light all around the whistle.

I decided to capture a quick splash image using my speed lights and a softbox behind my subject. Next time I would do more cleanup on the surface because it is a bit sloppy. It was a learning and a play day which may not produce the best results but I am just sharing the process, mistakes, and all.

As part of the on going softbox making competition this is second one of the series, from enchanting kerala diy team. you could find the full tutorial with pictures here.

This is a flower petal that I placed on a mirror to photograph some time back.

Lighting: Lit with a Yongnuo manual flash in an 8.6 inch Lastolite soft box hand held at camera left. Fill light came from a hand held mirror at camera right. The flash and my tripod mounted camera were triggered with a Yongnuo RF-603N.

Other plants, flowers, fruit or thingys that I've photographed using strobes can be seen in my Strobe Lit Plant set. For each image in the set, and there are over 1600 of them, I describe how I set up the lighting for that particular shot. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157628079460544/

I photographed this beautiful flower at the annual show put on by the San Diego Epiphyllum Society. My wife grows these flowers at home so we always attend the show if we're in town.

Sometimes simple is better. Just two SB910 were used to this picture. One on camera right with 20x20 softbox in TTL mode at 0 FV, and one on camera left for hair light with DIY snoot in manual mode.

The DC ring was at R/2…

Here is my photo junk, I got some new stuff, moved around some existing stuff and generally spent some time cleaning things up. I decided to take a photo since everythings all spiffy organized now.

NOTE: This photo is kinda out of date... things tha thave changed include adding another White Lighting X1600, an extra large softbox, a bunch of new grip gear (Avenger C Stands, Manfrotto Boom Stand, etc.).

Not everything goes every place, I often pick select items or cases and take just what I need. I have links to seperate photos of each case with more detailed information with what's in each case on the photo as notes.

NOTE: This photo made it into Flickr's 'Explore" as one of the top five hundred most interesting photos on a particular day, which makes me somewhat sad as the actual resulting photos didn't make it, ha! You can see all of my photo's that have made it into the Flickr Explore pages here.

My wife grows Epiphyllum Flowers, and every year that we're in town we attend the Mother's Day show put on by the San Diego Epiphyllum Society. This is from last year's show, but this year, because of the Corona Virus there was no show. This picture was taken last year with me hand holding the camera and my wife holding the flash and softbox. I know, I know... it's pathetic. But I was all out of ideas, and I went to the trouble of shooting it - so thought I may as well upload it...

It worked better in my head :-)

Ribbon threaded through a needle in the shape of a heart for the Macro Mondays "Hearts" challenge.

I made a heart shaped aperture to go over the front of the lens from cardboard to form the Heart shaped bokeh.

Yongnuo YN568EX-II Flash triggered with ETTL cord with octagon softbox camera left lighting the Ribbon.

Yongnuo YN500 with red flash gel behind ribbon lighting a piece of kitchen foil scrumpled up and then flattened out again to form the Bokeh Hearts behind. YN500 triggered via the YN568EX-II built in wireless trigger.

Both flashes were on manual as well as the camera.

Thanks for all the comments and faves really appreciated :) HMM

61/365 wazzup??

Wazzup peeps?! Im in the phil now.. sorry don't have much time to check your streams..

This was taken this morning at SG airport, taken by my girlfriend. We're just having some laughing trip walking around looking like this.. haha.. At least we're protected..

Ciao for now peeps.

Strobist Info:

In our many visits to Utah, we have seen a lot of beautiful arches, but have never come across a "Gourd Arch". This is my small attempt to remedy that.

Lighting stuff: I placed this on a mirror because I like seeing the different shapes that the reflection reveals. Lit with a YN560-III in a 24 inch softbox placed at camera left because I wanted the directional light shat creates the shadows which reveal shapes. Fill light came from a small hand mirror at camera right. The flash, in manual mode, was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.

Other still life images that I've attempted are in my Still Life album. www.flickr.com/photos/9422878@N08/sets/72157635247182331/

I wanted to try to create an image with different layers of light throughout the frame. While the final image looks relatively simple, I built the scene piece by piece using different flashes. Could I have gotten the same image by using a longer shutter speed and burning in the ambient? Not really. Each strobe is positioned to strike a surface in a particular way to achieve a certain emphasis or color. When you control every aspect of the scene, you can create whatever scene you like as you have limitless possibilities to alter each minute photon hitting the scene. Is it a work of art? Far from it. However, the lightning makes the shot much more interesting than it was without it.

Vivitar flashes triggered via Cybersyncs. WL triggered via optical slave.

Having been once again in a creative rut, and faced with a three hour train journey this morning, I put some serious thought into planning a photograph - and this was one of the resulting ideas.

It evolved somewhat as I went along, but the idea was always to have plain, dull old water entering the lens and coming out as some kind of rainbow jamboree. I was wondering if I could use milk coloured with food dyes, but in the end a lack of a) milk and b) food dye scuppered that plan short of a trip to the shop, so instead I used my shower head to create the water drop effect shown here, taking two photos of the shower using a large softbox and a speedlight on 1/16 power for each.

I then photographed the lens, using my Nikon 105mm f/4 Micro, and the same softbox in the same position relative to the camera, though on 1/2 power.

The rest was photoshop of the painstaking but straightforward variety; cutting out the grey background I'd set up around the lens, overlaying this on the shower head and colouring the droplets using filters (individually...). I'm happy with the result!

#127/365 Well Random Things Thursday is turning more into Morning Thursdays. I decided to keep up with last weeks theme of mornings. I'll probalby do random things this weekend. If you look close you can see my reflection and the catch light of the ring flash adapter....I guess this is a self portrait! Good Morning everyone!

I've photographed a lot of plants and flowers, because they're all around us, work cheap, and never complain. I have an album of these images with over 1300 pictures, and for each one, I have described how I lit them, in case you're interested in lighting.
