A walk along the Canning River Roleystone

ISO 200 f/8 1/200s 1 Alien Bees B1600 at minimum power above inside large softbox triggered with pocket wizards.

A year ago my wife found me a lovely model to work with so I could practice and improve my portrait skills and get a better understanding of lighting (what a wife, huh?). This is where we are at now; our first shoot where we have left the umbrellas behind and begun to experiment with a 28" softbox. Could have used fill on camera left, but we had no assistant and we were shooting Ninja-style in a crime-ridden neighborhood underneath a freeway overpass without any assistant to aid us.

Just messing around starting to work out how to make table top images. This first attempt is a real simple light setup with one light on the background (needs more up top) and one 24 " softbox about 8 inches above the glass, with the glass at the back edge to front light the tomato, Base is a granite tile. No photoshoppery on this one, just adjustments to the tones in Lightroom

I just picked up a 2x2 feet folding/portable softbox. I think I like it.

This is how it's done: pretty good light dispersion over the entire reflector.

taken in richmond, by the river

The setup image for this portrait:

1 - today's 40cm DIY softbox fitted with a strobe provides soft key light coming from the right

2 - A foamboard silver reflector mounted on a stick-in-a-can provides fill from the left side.

3 - A stick-in-a-can and some A clamps are used to hold a stretch of black fabric to act as backdrop

4 - A strobe fitted with blue gel and a coroplast gridspot is placed on the far right, casting a long light strip and provides some background separation

5 - IKEA chair is used as a posing stool

DIY softbox. pretty much made this as i went. used leftover science fair board (that stuff is really handy!), duct tape, aluminum foil and some freezer paper.

now that i know the procedure, maybe i'll document when i make the next one.

Studio light with softbox, white background with flash.

medium softbox with monobloc 1/8 power left of camera, medium softbox right of camera at 1/2 power, monobloc with snoot at 1/1 for hairlight

Shot using small softbox to left and direct flash into wall on the right

Because a bigger diffused lightsource makes softer shadows!

- Take a shoebox

- Cut a hole the size of your flash head out from the bottom.

- Aluminium-foil the inside of the box so there the light doens't get absorbed by the cardboard.

- Use white paper (chalk paper) for the outside.

Strobist: Studio strobe at almost full power, inside a big softbox slightly high cam left, but close to subject. Blue gelled strobe behind and to the sides, aimed at her. Unfortunately I'm not sure on the power level of the flashes. Triggered by an IR device.

A cheap Ebay softbox 60cm x 60cm with a homemade adaptor to enable me to use one or two speedlights, also packs up nice and small for transportation.

See the set for more pictures.

It is a 8mm bar chopped, bent and then threaded, a nut is attached to the thread to allow the softbox to be moved up and down.

softbox right, striplight back

I've gone through my share of Speedlight modifiers. This is the best. Optimum results without light falloff begin at 40 mm and up. Best to shoot with a Canon 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens for the reduction in weight.

May 6, 2017.

Not good: the light is concentrated in the middle of the screen, most of the reflective surface is unused. I could change the distance, but I would lose too much power.

i built this little contraption onto my trusty (made in Japan) Vivitar 285HV.

i just measured it out on matte board, cut it to size, and taped it all together.

materials used:

-wax paper 4x5 neg sleeve(s)

-matte board (black on one side, white on the other)

-gaffer's tape

-matte knife

it's not the most sturdy thing, and i'm sure it wouldn't handle a drop too well (nor a strong poke), but it works pretty decently.

Examples shot here, here, here, and here.

Now i need to modify it to be removable and possibly collapsible for portability.

Shot w/single yongnuo 500ex speed light into a newer 24x24 softbox with grid.

It's been years since I used a softbox but picked up this affordable collapsible one and tried it out during a fashion/model session.

Hoshi is my most available model when I want to try lighthing experiments.

Jordan waited to let people doodle on her casts, but she let loose this week. She felt so good about it, she doodled a little on her own.

Jordan had surgery on both legs and feet in February in order to correct complications caused by nearly seven years of chemotherapy. She is currently in remission from a diffuse brain tumor. She is quintessentially a survivor. Follow her story at Jordan's Journey www.jordanvincent.com

I finally got my flash to fire triggered by the build in flash (been trying to do so for a year and suddenly it just worked, haha).

To celebrate I made a softbox (atleast I think it's a softbox, correct me if I'm wrong) for the flash. It's made out of an old lamp screen (Mums awesome idea!), some aluminium foil, white fabric, two sticks and two rubber bands.
