SIMBOLOGÍA
Son varias las interpretaciones que se dan a esta sencilla pero espectacular expresión del carnaval. Unas teorías es que el zumbido de los enormes “polunpak” (cencerros), respondiendo a un antiguo culto, pretende despertar a la tierra, dormida en el periodo invernal. Otras, en cambio opinan que el estruendo pretende alejar pestes y plagas, predisponiendo la tierra para la simiente. Tampoco parece gratuito el modo de sacudir el “isopua” (hisopo) durante la marcha que bien parece quisiera acariciar la tierra. Es como si pretendiese fertilizarla, bendecirla como haría un sacerdote cristiano con su hisopo y agua bendita.
EL CORTEJO
Los actos comienzan el lunes posterior al último domingo de enero, a partir de las once de la mañana y después del correspondiente “amarretako” (almuerzo) el Zanpantzar de Zubieta compuesto por los Joaldunak (joare: cencerro; joal-, en palabras compuestas; -dun: sufijo que indica posesión; -ak: plural: los. Literalmente: "los que tienen cencerros"). inicia su recorrido hacia Ituren recorriendo a orillas del río Ezkurra al pie del monte Mendaur los cuatro km. que les separan de Ituren. Caminan formando dos filas, una a cada lado de la carretera. Lo hacen danzando rítmicamente, con severa precisión, imprimiendo un curiosísimo movimiento a sus caderas y haciendo sonar los grandes cencerros de manera acompasada. Llegados a Ituren el Mayordomo pedirá el consiguiente permiso para entrar en el pueblo, conseguido éste los de Zubieta entraran en el pueblo, sumándose a las cuadrillas de “mozorroak” y recorriendo sus calles para desembocar en la plaza. Al día siguiente la visita se repetirá a la inversa. En ambas poblaciones el “Zanpantzar” visita la “Herriko Ostatua” (taberna del pueblo) donde se les ofrecen las “Puskas”, (presentes en forma de embutido, queso, vino, etc).
Antaño el “Zanpantzar” solía visitar la vecina localidad de Doneztebe, para lo cual debían cruzar el pueblo de Elgorriaga, por este motivo pedían permiso a su alcalde, a través de su mayordomo le preguntaban si quería que cruzasen sus dominios en silencio o haciendo sonar los cencerros. Si en aquel momento había algún difunto en el pueblo, los disfrazados tenían que atravesarlo en total silencio. Mas si no había tal difunto, la comparsa lo hacia haciendo sonar los cencerros con su acostumbrada habilidad. www.ahari.org/esp/ituren.htm

Grad Student Temkin Links Dispersant Component with Fat Cell Differentiation
Alexis Temkin is finding an unexpected potential contributor to increased fat cell production: a component in dispersants used for oil spill cleanup and many personal care products.
Lexi’s research melds medicine and marine science to help researchers and doctors better understand the impacts of oil spill compounds on the determination of human cell type. She hopes to influence the way chemical safety is approached, “Our group wants to improve testing for sublethal effects, such as fat cell production rates, when assessing certain chemicals. It’s a different way to think about safety and health.”
Lexi is a marine biomedicine and environmental sciences Ph.D. student at the Medical University of South Carolina and a GoMRI Scholar with the project Using Embryonic Stem Cell Fate to Determine Potential Adverse Effects of Petroleum/Dispersant Exposure.

In a couple of weeks I've signed up on a course where I will hopefully learn how to use an overlocker. This will be at the same place where I went earlier in the year to learn how to thread and use a basic sewing machine.
It's a week or so before my daughter's birthday and the item of clothing we're making is a child's dress so I've let my daughter pick her fabric, thread, and buttons this weekend in the hope that I don't make an absolute arse of the dress and it will be something she can treasure.
Fingers crossed, no pressure.
I've been doing some bread board prototyping for a microcontroller
based battery desulfator unit. At this point I am heating up a
inductor or the mosfet both of which are BAD. I think my pulse is
inverted so I'm working on fixing that today.
Because a lot of my sculptural work comes under the umbrella of assemblage I tend to collect large quantities of found objects and materials - always being drawn the things and forms that have a certain resonance, but not always knowing what I will eventually use them in.
In this drawing I have taken a few of these items and, without trying to concern myself too much over matters of how the individual forms relate to each other, I've attempted to morph them all together. This proved to be more easily said than done, as a life time of drawing, awareness of perspective and of trying to accurately create the illusion of 3D forms in a 2D plain can hard wire the brain to following certain rules. None the less I'm quite happy with how it turned out - there are some interesting connections going on. A friend recently said that there was a lot of sexual imagery in the piece. I'm not sure if that says something about him or me.
Anyway - this work has just gone on display in Vamalgam 4, the Victoria and Albert Museum's new staff show. This year's exhibition is the biggest of the four shows, with some of the best work yet. The work ranges from painting, to photography, to drawing, to mixed media and showcases the diverse creative abilities of the people who make up the V and A Museum.

Three "mature" cars, around six weeks of regular work - it seems that I've been rectifying inherited neglect, preparing for tests, and replacing service items on and off since before Christmas.
So, it's my fault for running old vehicles. Old but fixable, I'd contest. Now, this approach to cheap motoring is fine, providing the home mechanic stays ahead of the work. If time is eroded by work, family, and other things, a period of oily fingers and chasing of MOT-test deadlines can wear even the most determined down. Add that to foul weather, and it becomes a veritable "campaign".
So, here are the remains, the slightly odd duck being a gesture to my parents old house. I found her in the garden. She appears here as a reminder that we need vehicles on standby just in case I have to rush south to attend to witness the last breaths of elderly parents.
So, it's over. Here is some of the evidence. The rest is driving around, tested, well-maintained. I'm glad it's over for now. Character building, but best viewed in hindsight.
A friend at work ordered some magazines from the 80's on ebay and we had a laugh at many of the ads. I popped them on the light table and grabbed a few shots.

Esperanza se inició en 1809, en terrenos llamados Puerta de Golpe, en una caballería de tierra cedida al efecto por Don Rafael de la Cruz Marrero, aunque comienza su auge a partir de 1815, cuando varios señores ilustres, entre ellos el medico sevillano, José Francisco Lleonart donan el dinero necesario para la construcción de un oratorio donde los pobladores del vecindario pudieran recibir servicios religiosos.
El oratorio se construyó de madera y guano. Bendecido por el P. José Dionisio Veitía el 19 de mayo de 1815, quedando a cargo del presbiterio José de Jesús Ledón.
Fue tal el impulso que el oratorio brindó a la zona que en 1817 existían 64 casas, 8 tiendas de ropa y víveres con alrededor de 300 habitantes.
Entusiasmados los vecinos por el auge alcanzado, se empeñaron en convertir el oratorio en iglesia auxiliar y lo lograron, dotándola de campanas, etc. Convertida en parroquia en abril de 1818, su primer párroco fue Gaspar de la Fuente.
El primer bautizo fue una niña hija de pardos o negros libres nombrada María Isidra fue el 14 de abril de 1818, hija de Juan Guevara y Ma. del Carmen de la Cruz. Ocurrió el primer bautizo de una niña blanca tres días después. Se llamaba María Regla, hija de José Joaquín Díaz y Antonia María Rodríguez. En 1819, Esperanza recibió la visita del Obispo Espada.
El Dr. Lleonart costeó la escultura de la Virgen de la Esperanza, sus vestidos, el niño, la corona de plata con pedrería, una media luna y un áncora del mismo metal, una cruz, el sagrario y un copón de plata sobredorado, para la inauguración de la parroquia. La imagen presenta a la virgen embarazada.
Del tercer matrimonio de Lleonart nació una niña a la que nombró Esperanza Genoveva. Lleonart pidió que en honor a su hija al pueblo lo llamaran Esperanza. Su deseo se vio realizado un año más tarde cuando la parroquia tomó el nombre de “Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza”, al recibir la autorización del Obispo de La Habana, Juan José Díaz de Espada.
José Francisco Lleonart, ejerció la medicina durante 66 años, hombre muy generoso y humanitario, al quedar ciego era tanta su práctica y sabiduría que se le permitió seguir ejerciendo en esas condiciones por más de 25 años. El cariño de su pueblo aureoló su recuerdo con anécdotas que lo han convertido en una verdadera leyenda en la historia de la medicina cubana.
Esperanza fue constituida como partido en 1819. El año anterior se había construido el primer cementerio. El actual cementerio sería edificado en 1856. En 1821 se inauguró la primera botica y la primera escuela, a cargo de Miguel Rubí de Celis, se estableció en 1822.
El templo fue destruido por un huracán en 1825. La construcción del nuevo templo comenzó en 1849 y terminó el 12 de mayo de 1858 y ese mismo día se celebró la primera misa.
Este territorio fue creado municipio en 1879 como consecuencia de la Paz del Zanjón. En 1881 vería la luz “Diario de la Esperanza” primer periódico de la zona; aparecerían posteriormente “La Época” en 1894 y “El Progreso” en 1909.
La Iglesia sufriría varias transformaciones. La última remodelación comprendió la construcción de sus retablos, pisos del presbiterio, mesa del altar, ambón, credencia y pila bautismal, así como la restauración del Cristo Crucificado que preside el templo. En la misa celebrada el 17 de diciembre de 2011, por el obispo diocesano Mons. Arturo González Amador, fue consagrado el templo y el altar.
The Hertz HSK135 components complete with crossover were mounted in the front doors. We used a 5x7 adapter to put the 5.25" and the tweeter close together for better imaging. We covered the entire area of the plastic bracket with Dynamat to seal it up better but I forgot to take a picture of it when done. This was an important step to better deaden and seal the area around the speaker.

One of the ceramic post insulators supporting the pantograph frame on the cab 1 end of 92023 has been replaced with a different type of insulator to the one it was originally fitted with.
There is so much symmetry in nature, yet it is always sprinkled with a bit of asymmetry. The combination which is probably aligned with the golden ratio of 1.618 (just a guess though) makes everything in nature so aesthetically appealing and wonderful to experience with the visual and also the somatosensory components and systems divinely bestowed to our biological manifestations in reality.
