The A 3/5 was the last passenger steam engine built for SBB, after this they switched to electric power. So not as big as in other countries, but still a beautiful design.

This railroad viaduct - Viaduc Sainte Marie, Ligne Chamonix - crosses over Rte 205 and the river Arve (hidden on the right side and flowing under the wide arch) in the French Alps near Mont Blanc. Arve flows into the Rhone at Geneve. The sign cautions against falling or fallen rocks for the next kilometer. We're on a divided highway where the opposing traffic is in a tunnel within the mountain to the left.
SNCF: the Cerdagne narrow gauge line is one of the most picturesque railways in France. Known with the nickname of "Train Jaune" or "Canari", it has a length of 62.5 km, metric gauge and is electrified with a third rail at 850 V DC. It was commissioned between 1910 and 1927.
During most of the year, the two electric railcar snowplows are stationed at Mont Louis-La Cabanasse. Are the numbers ZDy 201 and ZDy 202, and were transformed from old van railcars 8 and 9, built by Carde et Cie. between 1908 and 1909. (Improved scan of a paper photo taken by me).
Sitting on a rocky slope filled with golf balls, we were able to catch 3 eastbound trains coming out of Tahoe National Forest in a relatively short amount of time. Without being hit by a golf ball, fortunately :)
This is the final photo of the series of last year's trip to the western United States. It were very intensive, but rewarding, 10 days and we had a lot of fun travelling, visiting places and making these photos.
I can't wait to go back to the west side of the Atlantic...
After this final shot, we packed our stuff and headed back to San Francisco to witness the Giants beat the Mets :)
CMQ's westbound road train glides into Foster, QC behind a trio of former CP SD40-2F's. This location was the site of a recent derailment, as evidenced by the new ballast and old ties in the ditch. Consist : CMQ 9011, CMQ 9020, CMQ 9010.
After working the Saint-Jude spur all morning, CN's Saint-Hyacinthe local is heading west to Southwark yard with veteran 4129 pulling two dozen cars. The high green on the south track is for SLR's train 394 returning from Southwark and headed towards Richmond on the old Grand Trunk line.
We had a private charter running on Sunday. This allowed me - beside of my other duties - to join the outside session with simulated approaches.
So here our beauty is coming along with its train of five carriages.
1 April 2025 – Eforie, Constanța County, Romania
EN - Along the quiet swathe of track between Tuzla and Eforie Sud, near the waters of Balta Tuzla and just inland from the Black Sea, two unlikely neighbors share a fleeting moment.
One sits silently on dry land—an old patrol boat, rusted with age yet still brightened by murals of the sun, waves, and summer motifs. Elevated on concrete blocks as a roadside monument, it is one of two nearly identical vessels placed along this stretch of coast. Here, on the route that links Constanța and Mangalia, the boat feels less like a relic and more like a decorative reminder of seaside holidays, when these beaches are crowded with summer visitors. It echoes of maritime heritage in this region.
Behind it, a blue diesel railcar hums through the frame, the R8384 local train, traveling from Mangalia to Constanța. This is a Malaxa Series 78 railcar, the unit #779, built in 1939 in Nicolae Malaxa’s Romanian workshops. Once celebrated as modern and elegant, these railcars are now among the oldest passenger units still in operation for CFR Călători. Few remain, and their survival on daily services is both improbable and remarkable, when newer rolling stock is unavailable.
Together, the scene is a juxtaposition of stillness and movement: a ship that will never sail again, painted in bright seaside colors, and a train that, against all odds, continues to roll along the Black Sea coast. One is time anchored; the other, time in motion.

The days are getting shorter and I'm getting the itch to shoot more. I went out on this fine early August evening on information that a pair of freights were following each other on the Drummondville subdivision and would be in my neighborhood in good light. I caught 401 in the corn fields just east of Sainte-Madeleine with a pair of toasters (3109 and 2882) leading an healthy train. About 15 minutes behind him was Halifax-Toronto intermodal 121 with some 724 axles and 16,000-ft of trafic, but I messed up my shot.
This is the last photo I made of a B-Logistics train. 10 days later, the company was rebranded to Lineas. It was all about the name then: we had to wait a few more days before the first Lineas styled locomotives would exit the workshop.
On a nice April evening, we see 1329 with mixed freight train 41898 on the way to Antwerp. It left Somain a few hours earlier.

On the afternoon of 18/09/2015. 2044 001 presented itself in excellent condition hauling the regional train 3015 from Varazdin to Zagreb, seen on the long straight between the stop Hum-Lug and the station of Zabok.
After running into problems in Halifax, where the Halterm loop track was out-of-service and VIA Rail could not turn their Ocean train, the train shoved up the 64 miles of the Bedford subdivision to Truro, NS before they could turn their train and continue the trip north/west. This meant VIA 15 would be about 7 hours late into Saint-Hyacinthe, making for a great shot in afternoon light. Here, the train is slowing into Saint-Hyacinthe station with a pair of F40's leading a Renaissance trainset and the Tremblant Park. Consist : VIA 6426, VIA 6454.
On my way back to the west, I was overtaken near Kurort Rathen by a Metrans train in the direction of Dresden.

SNCF Voyageurs: the EMU Z 56606/56605 (603XL) passes through the Clichy-Levallois station, working the TER 3313 train from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Cherbourg.
It is part of a series of 40 EMUs of the Regio 2N type, acquired by the Normandy region, to work long-distance regional services. Unlike other Regio 2N type trains, these 40 EMUs, of the Omneo Premium Krono+ type, have first class seats, their top speed is 200 km/h, and they are painted in the "Carmillon" livery.
SLR's daily (ex-Sunday) Richmond-Southwark turn has reached CN rails and is headed west by Saint-Hyacinthe station with 6 units pulling a healthy train. With this much power, a heavy train surely awaits them at CN's Southwark yard for the return trip to Richmond.
