A spot I keep returning to is this one close to Kamp-Bornhofen. Is it because of a previous time when I missed this same train hauled by a black class 66 engine? I had taken a group photo using the camera's timer a few moments before, and had forgotten to turn it off. And you only notice it when pressing the shutter button results in beep...beep instead of click.

La BB75104 est en tête d'un céréalier composé de wagons "Soufflet" reliant Rouen-Martainville à Bobigny, puis Troyes et enfin les sillos de Polisot dans le Grand Est. La rame vient de passer Herblay avec +30. Pas commun de voir cet EF passer par le groupe VI !
Talbot leverde in 1996-98 treinstellen type DM'90 - bijgenaamd Buffel - aan de Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS). Hoewel nog lang niet versleten rijden ze inmiddels toch al in hun nadagen door de privatisering en elektrificering van spoorlijnen. Zo ook bij de spoorlijn van Zwolle naar Kampen ('Het Kamperlijntje') waar in 2017 de exploitatie wordt overgenomen door Syntus met nieuwe treinstellen. Tevens wordt de lijn geëlektrificeerd en zal de weidse blik in de polder Mastenbroek daardoor verleden tijd zijn.
Dutch National Railways (NS) class DM'90 was built by Talbot during 1996-98 and got the nickname 'Buffalo'. DMU's 3433+3447 are spotted here on the branch line Zwolle - Kampen. As from 2017 the train operator will change from NS (Dutch national railways) into the private operator Syntus. Moreover, the line will be electrified which will make the view on the typical Dutch landscape less attractive.

Earlier attempts to shoot the famous French nez cassé locomotives on the IC trains between Paris and Maubeuge were rather frustrating, partly due to the very sparse number of trains. That is, until we discovered that there were also loco-hauled trains running between Paris and Saint-Quentin. It turns out you can fill quite a day south of Saint-Quentin chasing these trains, which my friend Eurorailer and I have done a few times last summer.

Slechts een enkele Portugese Interregio-trein (IR) rijdt in Porto door van het hoofdstation Campanhã naar het in het oude centrum gelegen kleine kopstation São Bento dat verder gedomineerd wordt door moderne elektrische voorstadstreinen. Net als de stationshal zijn ook de perronoverkappingen van Porto São Bento fraai, zeker in combinatie met een Interregio-trein uit Pocinho (Linha do Douro). Bij het vallen van de avond legt de 55-jaar oude CP-locomotief 1429 met rijtuigen uit 1948-1949 (!) als IR 876 langzaam vanuit de tunnel de laatste meters af tot het stootblok.
Only a single CP-Interregio train (IR) continues in Porto from the main Campanhã station to the small head-end São Bento station located in the old town, which is otherwise dominated by modern suburban electric trains. Like the station hall, Porto São Bento's platform covers are beautiful, especially when combined with an Interregio train from Pocinho (Linha do Douro). At dusk, the 55-year-old locomotive 1429 with carriages from 1948-1949 (!) as IR 876 slowly makes its final metres from the tunnel to the end of the platform.

Een 40-jarig jubileum bij één werkgever komt tegenwoordig weinig meer voor. Dat geldt zeker ook voor het spoormaterieel. In 2021 lukte het locomotief 1611 om de 40 jaar vol te maken. Begin 1981 werd de eerste locomotief van de serie 1600 van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) afgeleverd. Op 22 juni 1981 werd locomotief 1611 afgeleverd, met de verwachting om jarenlang bij NS in dienst te blijven. Hoewel 40 jaar in dienst, heeft de locomotief al heel wat werkgevers gekend; een stuk of acht.
Vanaf januari 1999 werd de eerste 37 locomotieven van de serie 1600 (1600-1637) ingezet bij NS Cargo, als gevolg van de opdeling van de Nederlandse Spoorwegen in een goederentak en reizigerstak. NS Cargo ging na een fusie met DB Cargo verder onder de naar Railion. Dat was in 2000. Eerst was er Railion Benelux, waar NS ook een aandeel in had. Na de verkoop van de NS-aandelen in 2003, ging het verder onder de naam Railion Nederland. In 2009 ging Railion verder onder de naam DB Schenker Rail, om vervolgens in 2016 weer DB Cargo te gaan heten.
Vanaf 2009 werden er verschillende 1600’en gesloopt. De 1611 heeft altijd de dans kunnen ontspringen. Vanaf januari 2020 reden er nog maar drie 1600-en bij DB Cargo; de 1604, 1611 en 1615.
In september 2020 is de 1611, samen met vijf andere 1600’en overgenomen door Railexperts. Op 8 mei 2021 heeft het Duitse RailAdventure een meerderheidsbelang in Railexperts genomen. Ter gelegenheid hiervan werd de ex 1611 in het Railadventure-kleurenschema gestoken en mocht meteen die dag een eerste overbrenging doen.
De foto toont de 1611 tijdens het passeren van station Gilze-Rijen. Het is 21 maart 2009 als de locomotief met vijf beladen kalkwagens aan de haak op weg is van de kalkgroeve nabij het Belgische Hermalle naar de hoogovens in Beverwijk. Vanwege werkzaamheden voerde de reis die dag via Breda en Rotterdam in plaats van via Utrecht. Geheel passend bij die periode draagt de locomotief hier de opschriften van Railion.

Op de spoorlijn Liberec - Harrachov in Tsjechië worden Regio-Shuttle-motorwagens ingezet van fabrikant Stadler uit 2011. Twee stuks met voorop de 840 012-9 passeren het afgelegen station van Dolní Polubný, niet ver verwijderd van de grens met Polen.
Motorcars of class Regio-Shuttle built by Stadler in 2011 provide the services at the Czech railway line from Liberec to Harrachov. Headed by 840 012-9 the train is passing the railway station of Dolní Polubný, not far away from the Polish border.

Het is half zeven als de overwegwachter op zijn fluitje blaast. Via de portofoon heeft de overwegwachter zojuist te horen gekregen dat trein 219 naar Teheran vanaf het drie kilometer verderop gelegen station van Sari is vertrokken. Het sluiten van de overweg is hier geen sinecure en vergt een goede timing; tot op het laatste moment blijft het verkeer van de drukke rondweg de overweg passeren. Wanneer de bomen dalen weet op het allerlaatste moment een Mercedes vrachtwagen van het type ‘Kurzhauber’ met piepende remmen te stoppen, terwijl de overwegwachter met een enigszins bezorgde blik aan de slinger blijft draaien. Het brullen van de zware diesellok is al goed te horen als teken dat de trein weldra de overweg zal passeren.

By the time I got to the Ruhr area, I only got to check out the Duisburg-Hochfeld railway bridge, where I ended my previous visit. It's an interesting structure, mainly because of the original 1870's bridgehead standing next to the bridge currently in use.
DB's 185 192 is crossing the Rhine river with an intermodal train, probably heading south. There are so many lines running in the Ruhr area, it's hard to know which line is used by which trains. That's another good excuse to return and go find out!

De Fichtelbergbahn vanuit Cranzahl, Saksen kent een mooi viaduct vlak voor het eindpunt Kurort Oberwiesenthal. Deutsche Reichsbahn (DR) stoomloc 99 1772-5 arriveert hier met een gemengde trein. Zorgvuldig was van te voren gepland dat op dit tijdstip de zonnestand goed zou zijn voor de foto ........:-) De Duitsers zeggen dan "so ein Mist" - vertaald is dit echter geen "mist" maar "wat een ellende". Eigenlijk valt dat hier achteraf best wel mee.

'Two days after Hamas’ October 7th, 2023, attack, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued an order to the IDF Chief of Staff for a massive and devastating bombing campaign in Gaza. “I’m not interested in targets”, he reportedly declared: “Take down houses, bomb with everything you have”.
The order was implemented: within 48-hours, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced he was releasing “all the restraints” on Israeli fire, IDF spokesman Daniel Hagari asserted the Airforce was inflicting “maximum damage” on Gaza, and Israeli Air Force Chief of Staff Omer Tishler boasted of attacking “with thousands of munitions”, “in a large mass, and not surgically”.
For the next two years, the Israeli Airforce launched tens of thousands of airstrikes that overwhelmingly killed Palestinian civilians. For example, an investigation into Israel’s first month of bombing in October 2023 found that of over 600 Israeli strikes which killed more than 5100 Palestinians, just four percent were directed at a military target.
This bombing campaign was responsible for the vast majority of the over 71,000 violent Palestinian deaths in Gaza since October 7th, killing women and children at a faster rate than any other conflict in the 21st century.'

The BB-25581 entered service in France with the SNCF on January 26, 1972, ended its French life at Fret SNCF, the SNCF freight division and was withdrawn on December 14, 2006. Then it migrated to Romania, purchased Regiotrans , a private passenger train operator now called Regio Calatori.
On April 15, 2025, it was seen working on the R 11034 Brașov - București Nord, approaching Sinaia in the Carpathians. The passenger cars are also French. SNCF called them RIO, “Rames Inox Omnibus”, stainless steel trains for local services. They were the rural and medium distance version of the RIB suburban cars, the “Rames Inox Banlieue” (stainless steel suburban trains).

October 28, 2022 - Right after sunrise, the 2-10-0 #16.27 climbs the grade above Kyustendil on the terminal and scenic section Kyustendil – Gyueshevo of the Line #6 Sofia - Voluyak - Pernik - Gyueshevo. When built, in 1910, this section continued to what was then Turkey, today’s North Macedonia. Today, it does not go any further than Gyueshevo, however the track still seems to remain in place beyond Gyueshevo.
This was a FarRail charter freight photo-train from Kyudenstil to Gyueshevo, that kept me and the other group members busy and happy from 8 am to 4:30 pm.

Three machines of this type were built in 1926 for the Seetalbahn. It is similar to the bigger - and more famous railway crocodiles - but was derived from the then new electrical shunters.
9 May 2025 - Dolný Turček, Slovakia
The preserved steam locomotive ČSD 475.196, of a series nicknamed Šlechtična ("Noblewoman"), is seen working hard on the climb south of Vrútky, at Dolný Turček between Kremnické Bane and Turček, in central Slovakia (Žilina region).
It is travelling on the scenic Diviaky – Zvolen line (#171), which winds through the Kremnica Mountains, a landscape where railways, forests, and former mining villages coexist.
Built by Škoda in Plzeň between 1947 and 1950, the 475.1 class was designed for long-distance passenger services across Czechoslovakia. With its elegant design, red driving wheels, and distinctive star on the smokebox, the class became one of the icons of post-war steam in Czechoslovakia.
Today, 475.196 is preserved at Vrútky and occasionally hauls special trains in the region.
