Christmas Eve, and the train station was almost deserted. These spaces are already liminal, not destinations themselves, just way points between other places, but when they are this quiet, after dark, it just increases that sensation.
Een greep uit de diadoos met een blik te Visvliet op de grens van Friesland en Groningen. De Hilmahuistermolen staat er nu nog steeds, maar het klassieke armsein is kort hierna vervangen door moderne treinbeveiliging. Ook het station van Visvliet bestaat niet meer.

"The UK has announced an end to its surveillance flights over Gaza, after sending more than 600 RAF spy flights between December 2023 and 10 October 2025.
The flights were carried out from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus by 14 Squadron's Shadow R1 aircraft while Israel was committing what a UN committee ruled in September to be a genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
Since October 2023, at least 67,000 Palestinians have been killed by Israel, with Save the Children estimating that one Palestinian child was killed every hour.
According to the Ministry of Defence, surveillance aircrafts were "always unarmed, did not have a combat role and were tasked solely to locate hostages". The government claims it "strictly controlled" the information passed on from these flights, only giving "information relating to hostage rescue" to Israeli authorities.
However, the secrecy and lack of parliamentary oversight around these flights has raised questions around the UK's complicity in and active assistance of Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza.
In March, an investigation by Action on Armed Violence for Declassified UK found the RAF conducted 24 flights in the two weeks leading up to and including the day of Israel's deadly attack on the al-Nuseirat refugee camp on 8 June 2024. The attack reportedly killed 274 Palestinians and injured over 700, while four Israeli hostages were rescued in an act of 'collateral genocide'. It's unclear whether British intelligence directly contributed to the attack or was solely used to locate hostages."

Varanasi (Inde) - Changement d’air et retour en Inde avec une série réalisée en Octobre 2023. Cette photo a été prise alors que je revenais du bidonville de la Kharbuza où j’avais passé toute la matinée à photographier l’équipe médicale de l’ONG Action Bénarès. Pour regagner l’avenue principale face à la gare, le chemin le plus court est de traverser les voies ferrées. Il suffit d’être prudent car même pendant les travaux, un train peut en cacher un autre.
Varanasi (India) - Change of scenery and return to India with a series made in October 2023. This photo was taken as I was returning from the Kharbuza slum where I had spent the whole morning photographing the medical team of the NGO Action Bénarès. To get back to the main avenue facing the station, the shortest way is to cross the railway tracks. You just have to be careful because even during the works, one train can hide another.
After a late morning departure from Farnham, a Herzog ballast train led by CMQ 9011 is about to duck under Chemin des Pères as it enters the town of Magog, QC. Consist : CMQ 9011, CP 5936, CP 6017.

Bien loin de ses terres alsaciennes, le WIT (Wagon d'Inspection des Tunnels) de Strasbourg, est venu en renfort en Île-de-France sur la région de Paris-St-Lazare.
Encadré par les Y 8288 et Y 8369, cette petite compo sympathique partie de Conflans-Ste-Honorine quelques minutes auparavant, se rend au Triage d'Argenteuil sous la marche 817942.
La Be 4/4 616 (una delle tre Be 4/4 prodotte da FFA e BBC tra il 1984 ed il 1985 ed acquistate di seconda mano dalla FW - Frauenfeld - Wil Bahn) di CJ - Chemins de fer du Jura - effettua il treno 1230 (Glovelier - Saignelégier) dello scorso 12 novembre. La foto la mostra in transito presso la fermata di Le Bémont.
In the second half of september 2016 I had a week off work that I used for a trip to some - for me - unknown territory: the Czech and Slovak republics. Day 1 of the trip was the day to cover most of the distance: destination Dresden. I would use the following days to follow the Elbe river to Usti Nad Labem, and then follow the freight trains and see where I end up.
First stop was still in Belgium though, to make a photo of a pilgrimage train returning from Lourdes. I met up with a friend in Marche-les-Dames, where the train passed us on the track that's normally used for trains in the other direction. Never mind, the steep rocks still look impressive.

Im äußersten Süden Frankreichs betreibt der Verein Train du Pays Cathare et du Fenouillèdes (TPCf) Touristikverkehre als „Train Rouge“ auf der reizvollen Bahnlinie von Rivesaltes am Mittelmeer nach Axat im Pyrenäenvorland. Zum Einsatz kommen verschiedene Garnituren, wobei meist ein Triebwagen vom Typ X 4500 „Caravelle“ zwischen Rivesaltes und Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet pendelt, während ein lokbespannter Zug auf dem hinteren Abschnitt zwischen Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet und Axat zum Einsatz kommt.
Im Bahnhof von Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet bahnt sich BB 63240 beim Umsetzmanöver den Weg durch das Gestrüpp. Während die Gleisanlagen und das Bahnhofsgebäude ein wenig verwahrlost wirken, macht der Bahnsteig im Hintergrund einen sehr gepflegten Eindruck.

La SY X305 (CFD Montmirail, 1977 e recentemente revampizzata) delle Chemins de fer de Provence espleta il treno 2 (Saint-André-les-Alpes - Nice) dello scorso 6 ottobre. La foto mostra la bella automotrice nei pressi di Villars-sur-Var, mentre serpeggia in riva al fiume Var.
L'unità 020 appartenente al gruppo di locomotive elettriche 22300 di proprietà di Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français è qui ripresa sul viadotto "Port de la Rague" di Théoule-sur-mer al traino di un convoglio di carri bisarca
Naast de reguliere treinen van de Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) rijden er van tijd tot tijd ook speciale treinen de Brocken op. Deze Mallet-locomotief 99 5902-4 (gebouwd door Jung in 1898) met 'Traditionszug' was dan ook een leuke afwisseling en werd kort voor het eindstation op de winterse Brocken vastgelegd.
Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) locomotive 99 5902-4 (class Mallet built by Jung in 1898) is approaching with a special charter the end station at the Brocken.

Fin de journée du 10 Juillet dernier, la BB 22252 RC assure un TER Avignon - Marseille via la branche de Cavaillon. Elle est vue quelques kilomètres avant la gare de la capitale du melon s’apprêtant à y effectuer son arrêt.

L'ABe 2/6 633 "La Gruère" di CJ sta per raggiungere la fermata di Le Pied-d'Or per poi prosegue il suo viaggio verso Le Noirmont come R 37 154 (Tavannes - Le Noirmont). Le Chemins de fer du Jura dispongono dal 2001 di quattro GTW di produzione Stadler... nonostante l'arrivo di sei nuovi elettrotreni, sempre realizzati da Stadler, i vecchi GTW prestano ancora servizio, ma verranno venduti nei prossimi anni.

La BB 7417 assurait un train en provenance du Teil pour Sibelin avec une mini composition, un wagon nucléaire. De passage à proximité de Saint Rambert d’Albon. Le 17 Juillet 2017.
Others go for smaller things - our club bought finally this small steam locomotive. It came the highway on a heavy loader.
Built in 1890 for one of the predecessors of SBB, it looks like a "Tigerli" but is it not as being built before the SBB built "Tigerli".
It is now again under the protective roof of our bridge, and might move into the shed, when we find some room.
It looks pretty cumbersome, but seems to be still in a fair state.
Next stop were 2 bridges near Sidi Harazem. In the meanwhile, a friendly station master had informed us about expected freight traffic. The waiting was long, though, and the stench of a deceased cow in the mid-day heat was hard to bear. A passenger train to Meknes could only distract us shortly.
