A Southern Ontario Railway SD40 leads St. Lawrence and Atlantic train 393 through Douville, around mile 43 on the west side of Saint-Hyacinthe, QC. Consist: RLHH 3403, QGRY 6904, SLR 3047, SLR 805, SLR 3805.
Medway's Neuss to Antwerp container shuttle for mother company MSC was right on time to enjoy some early spring sunshine. A few more kilometers to go before it has reached its final destination, it passes through this rare rural lap of ground just north of Antwerp.

Le paysage et l’éclairage ne se prêtaient pas vraiment à une prise de vue en silhouette sur ciel, le soleil était levé depuis longtemps et à cet endroit le paysage ne permettait pas de détacher entièrement le train sur fond de ciel. Mais les nuages étaient magnifiques et changer de côté était d’autant plus tentant que la photo prise de l’autre côté, avec le train éclairé, risquait d’être assez banale.
Donc voici ce contre-jour qui était un pari un peu risqué.
Heureusement, les planètes se sont alignées avec un panache de vapeur parfait, juste ce qu’il fallait, pas trop fourni et à plat sur le train.

The landscape and lighting were far from ideal for a true silhouette shot. The sun had long since risen, and at this location the terrain made it impossible to isolate the train cleanly against the sky. Yet the sky itself was magnificent, while a conventionally lit photograph from the opposite side risked looking rather ordinary.
So, this backlit view was very much a gamble.
Fortunately, everything came together at the decisive moment: a perfect ribbon of steam drifted low along the train, delicate enough not to overwhelm the composition, yet just sufficient to bring the scene to life.

Near Taourirt, while standing on a hill overlooking the railway line with the town in the background, we had another interesting encounter. A man came up to us and started talking, pointing to holes in the ground. After a while it became clear to us that we were probably standing in a location where snakes lay their eggs. We tipped the man to thank him for the information, but didn't leave before making a photo of the train to Casablanca.

Soirée du 13 Juillet dernier, une rame Régio2N assure un TER reliant Hyères à Marseille, de passage sous les dernières lueurs de la journée après la gare de Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer.
With connection from the mainland by ferry it is possible to go further by train in L’Île-Rousse. In the moment of taking this photo, the ferry starts its night journey to Sète.

I ended the day close to the French border. I knew that there was a train scheduled from Tournai to Longeau. It would have to leave on time though, because scheduled departure was only 20 minutes before the sun would be too low. I headed to Froyennes, on the line towards Lille, and set up a shot with the Théâtre Saint-Luc in the background. This is part of a 19th century boarding school, and is now converted to an event location. Then the waiting began. I saw the shadows creeping further and further, until finally, right on time, the Euro 4001 locomotive rented by Railtraxx came in sight. 2 minutes later the tracks were covered in shadows. Sometimes you’re lucky!
This train marked the end of a beautiful, but rather quiet, day, filled with a lot of diesel traction.

Day 2 of 2025 saw sun and clouds. When this train to Gent passed me, I saw mostly clouds. It wasn't as bad as a few hundred meters more towards Lokeren. There, sun and rain added some spectacle to the photo.
Timing is everything, as a few minutes earlier the foreground scene was also lit by the sun. And a few minutes after this shot, I had to run and seek shelter for the rain.
Vanaf de kerktoren van Cheb heb je een mooi uitzicht over onder andere het spoorviaduct over de rivier de Eger. Daar rijdt een Pendolino (serie 682) van CD overheen vanuit Františkovy Lázně naar Cheb.

After a trip to CN's Southwark yard to interchange, a heavy St. Lawrence and Atlantic train mainly laden with propane and lumber heads east through mile 108 of the Sherbrooke subdivision behind half a dozen EMD products. On the right is the former approach signal to Ste-Rosalie. SLR and CN rail is now split with a short stretch of rule 105 track.
De Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) heeft een van haar eindpunten bovenop de Brocken - met 1141 meter de hoogste berg van Noord-Duitsland waar zich extreme weersomstandigheden kunnen voordoen en waarvan de top gemiddeld 306 dagen per jaar in mist is gehuld. We konden ons dan ook gelukkig prijzen met 2 dagen helder zicht en hoewel het prachtig was overdag, stond het vizier gericht op de laatste trein op deze 2 dagen. Stoomloc 99 7237-3 is hier bijna bij het eindstation op de Brocken aangekomen terwijl de winterzon door de avondschemering wordt overmand. Niet alleen het einde van de dag, maar ook het einde van de vakantie en ..... het (voorlopig) einde van deze fotografische samenvatting ervan.
The Harzer Schmalspurbahnen (HSB) ends amongst others on top of the Brocken - with 1141 meter the highest peak of Northern Germany. A place with extreme weather conditions and on average 306 days per year covered in mist and fog. We were very lucky with 2 days of clear sky and although it was beautiful during the day, our focus was on the last train of these days. Steam locomotive 99 7237-3 is approaching here the end station at the Brocken during sunset. Not only the end of this day, but also the end of the holidays and ... the end of this summary in pictures.

On a gorgeous February morning, an empty grain/potash train out of Joffre yard crosses the Richelieu river between Otterburn Park and Beloeil, QC. Consist : CN 2279, CN 3284 (mid train).

A weekend in France is perfect to relax. That's my excuse to go, at least :). The weekend of October 24th I headed to the region north of Strasbourg, to make some photos of the Eurocity trains that were running their last kilometers.
I first stopped in Wilwisheim, also home to an awesome bakery, to eat breakfast and wait for what was going to come. Among the many trains I saw before the Eurocity was this Europorte train, in soft autumn light.

Notice, in the back, the new high speed line, which was the final reason to stop running the Belgium - Switzerland Eurocity services.
