Sunset at Horná Štubňa

Coming from Banská Bystrica, the Czechoslovak 486.007 descends towards Horná Štubňa after the Čremošné and Malý Šturec section, between the Veľká Fatra range and the Kremnica Mountains.

At the eastern end of Horná Štubňa obec station, shortly after the viaduct, the low evening sun reduces the train to silhouette. The foreground trees frame the scene and give depth to the backlit composition.

EN – 31 May 2026, 18:20 – Čremošné, Slovakia

At kilometre 32.6, 486.007 emerges from the Čremošné Tunnel (Čremošniansky tunel in Slovak) while working away from Banská Bystrica on line 170, Zvolen – Banská Bystrica – Dolná Štubňa – Vrútky.

Built between 1936 and 1940, the tunnel is 4,697 metres long and remains the longest railway tunnel in Slovakia. It passes beneath the Malý Šturec Pass, between Čremošné and Harmanec, at the transition between the Greater Fatra and Kremnica Mountains. As a summit tunnel, it marks the highest and most demanding part of the Banská Bystrica – Dolná Štubňa section; for trains coming from Banská Bystrica, it is also the last of the line’s 22 tunnels.

Although the line does not reach a particularly high altitude (its summit is at 692.9 metres) it is one of Slovakia’s most striking mountain railways. Over roughly forty kilometres, it includes 22 tunnels with a combined length of 12,211 metres, representing about 30% of the route, as well as five viaducts. The terrain is steep, enclosed and heavily wooded, which makes access to many of the best photographic locations difficult.

Preserved Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) diesel-electric locomotive T 678.0012, built in 1963, emerges from the east portal of the 4,697-metre Čremošné Tunnel (Čremošniansky tunel in Slovak) Slovakia’s longest railway tunnel, while heading towards Banská Bystrica.

The portal is notable for its horseshoe-shaped opening and large masonry arch, giving it a distinctly monumental appearance. Largely preserved in its authentic form, it is recognised for its heritage value and displays a stylised medieval or fortified architectural character.

Thoughts of the last moment are sometimes the better ones, I must admit. While packing our stuff to go home, it appeared to us that we could still make it for the TER Service to Sarreguemines. This service was one of the last ones hauled a BB67400 series diesel. We won the race against the clock; in what were really the last rays of sunshine I got my one and only photo of this loco-hauled service. Shortly hereafter the train was replaced by railcars.

On the morning of October 23 I was in Klamm right on time to catch this train from Mantova to Dunai Finomito in Hungary. The foreground is covered with roots of trees: I had to raise my camera quite high to reach above it.

The name Vrutice sounded familiar to me, but I didn't remember why. It's only later that I founf out that there is a very nice photo location for morning eastbound trains. Doesn't matter, I also like this location on the inside of the curve.

The longer days of the year make after-work photography sessions worthwhile. Typically I visit only one location then, for some oldschool sitting and waiting what comes by. I spent a successfull evening in Beveren on the branch line that comes from the port (left river bank), right before it connects to the main line to Gent. Of the three trains I saw here, I like my photo below here best.

The Dutch railway station Rotterdam Stadion is normally only used during football matches and events at the nearby stadium. However, on the weekend of 24-25 June 2023, trains from the south ended here due to works at Rotterdam Central. This was a great opportunity to capture the infrastructure here for a change.

The entrance/exit does have check-in/out-facilities (with yellow signs attached to make it a bit more complicated) but otherwise this looks mostly .... old and bare (but lumber-proof). Should all the plans of 'Rotterdam Stadionpark' go ahead, much will change here in the future and this temporary stop will become a full-fledged train station.

Since it became very quiet in Gemmenich , we headed east of Montzen in order to catch the Oradea train that we missed in Gemmenich, and that was parked in Montzen. Turned out the line was blocked due to a tragic level crossing accident. Once the traffic goit going again, we got treated by 7 freights in a row, among which this beautiful blue Railtrax 266 016 with the Oradea shuttle 41594 to Zeebrugge.

You can't always have drinks on a terrace in between visits when it's sunny, right? Not always, indeed, so I found myself next to the tracks for a little while, while my girlfriend was chilling out along the water. South of Stockholm's train station is a bridge over the water, right before the tracks dive into a tunnel.

I didn't stay that long, really, but got to see a lot of interesting trains besides the frequent commuter trains.

The Snälltaget to Malmö has just left Stockholm, hauled by Hectorrail's 242 531, the same one that brought us to the Swedish captial.
