It was late and immediately after making this photo I packed my gear and drove home. It was only the next day that I took the time to look at the photos I made. That's when I discovered a strange orange line on the top left of the image.

Was it a plane? No, that would show up as a line of dots and it wouldn't be such a long stripe on a picture with a 0.6 second exposure.

A satellite? No, same reasoning regarding the length of the line.

The only conclusion I could make is that I actually shot a meteor on its way through our atmosphere. That's a first one in my 25+ year photography career.

Oh yeah, there's also a train in the picture. We see Railtraxx' only leftover Traxx, 186 123, hauling a set of blue tankers to Ghent.

An Orange on the Čierná Voda Viaduct

Preserved ČSD diesel-electric locomotive T 678.0012 “Pomaranč” climbs towards Čremošné, crossing the Čierná Voda Viaduct in steady rain on the mountain section of line 170.

The T 678.0 class, later class 775, was a small series of 1325 KW / 1800 HP diesel-electric locomotives built by ČKD Praha for the Czechoslovak State Railways in the early 1960s. Designed for heavy freight work on demanding, non-electrified routes, these Co’Co’ locomotives were among the early large Czech-built diesels intended to replace steam traction in mountain service.

Painted in orange, they soon acquired the nickname “Pomaranč”, “Orange” in Slovak. Only 17 units were built for ČSD between 1961 and 1964, before the programme was discontinued in favour of the Soviet-built T 679.1 locomotives from Voroshilovgrad, in today’s Luhansk Oblast, Ukraine.

This locomotive, T 678.0012, carries ČKD works number 5646 and was completed in 1963. Based at Zvolen for much of its career, it is now preserved in working order in Slovakia, making it one of the two surviving members of this short-lived but distinctive class.

A bientôt!

Good morning!

I had to test this area sooner or later, and what better way to start than with a 7200 Béton under a beautiful sun, heralding the arrival of spring.

The BB 7275 and its Corail train, consisting of eight carriages, can be seen speeding through Gazeran station before entering the central region bound for Le Mans, on TER no. 862523 from Paris Montparnasse.

A very nice rendering that adds variety to this line, which is quite rich without seeming so.

Note that this iconic composition will disappear next year, so enjoy it while you can!

See you soon!

A bientôt

Good morning!

24 January was a rather ambiguous day, with clouds spoiling my plans for morning spotting on the POLT line.

So I switched to plan B, which is the L1, seeing that it was clearing up quite a bit over Seine-et-Marne.

Here is the well-known spot in Changis sur Marne, which is obviously a sure bet for afternoon freight trains, and here is one, the classic Hexa FRET No. 56135 Le Bourget triage > Woippy, which offers some nice compositions, as in this photo.

The BB 26135 with HF markings was then the owner of this beautiful load (various tank wagons, covered wagons and containers), accompanied by the BB 27102 in the same livery.

It's worth noting that this is my first 26000 at the head of the train in this area, which adds to its charm and made me want to share it with you.

See you soon.

Bolivia, Andes, Altiplano, Siloli Desert, 4000 meters above sea level, 13.123,36 feet

After 8 freights in Tricesimo time was ripe to move to a new location. I accepted that I could potentially miss some trains when moving. So be it, enough is enough. I ended up in a field near Cavalicco where I spent the remaining 2 hours of the afternoon shooting one train after the other. I was happy to see a very clean Mercitalia 652 in between the never-ending flood of Vectron locos.

The day report with more photos from both Tricesimo as Cavalicco is now published on railscapes.blog

What is now a classic view may be over sooner than later. The 21 series locomotives are being phased out, just like the M4 coaches. They are now primarily used on rush hour trains, just like the 22 series locomotives with their M2 coaches a couple of years ago. They may seem unintersting now, but we’ll look at the pictures with nostalgic feelings once the rail scene has been taken over by M6, M7 and desiro trains.

I was so hot in the meanwhile that "shade" became a criterion for the photo locations. Again east of Settat we found this spot with a view on a Holcim (cement?) plant.

The 2 freights were in, check! Up next, an RE2 towards Schwandorf. We parked the car in a safe spot, avoiding falling chestnuts to damage the car and set up for an autumnal shot. The sun was almost completely gone now and it proved rather challenging to still get a sunny picture.

We see DB's 218 406 hauling the RE2 4863 from Hof to Schwandorf.

Reiserdorf, October 22, 2025.

Let's end the series of the phosphate trains with this empty train towards Khouribga. After making the photo, we got to meet the owner of the house we stood next to. His son worked for the railroad, so the connection was quickly made. He invited us to his house, where we enjoyed a delicious couscous dish, that his wife had prepared on the spot. This is hospitatlity I will never forget!

From the Ruhr area I had a long drive waiting for me. On the second day of my trip, weather forecasts in South-Eastern Germany were looking good. A perfect occasion to check out the RE2 trains hauled by BR218 locos.

Due to infrastructure works between Schwandorf and Regensburg, trains were limited to the Hof - Schwandorf section of the line. Trains were exceptionally running in push-pull mode due to these works, and only 2 of the 3 needed rakes were operated with BR218 and Dosto coaches. But it was still interesting enough to meet up with Bramtrains to chase some trains.

The day started cloudy and rainy, but that was only for a short time. At 10:22 we caught our first RE2 of the day, being pushed to Hof by 218 406. It is seen here at the southern entrance of Weiden (Oberpfalz), on the junction of the lines to Schwandorf and Nünberg.

East of Settat the railway line curves around the hills and a Holcim plant, with plenty of photo opportunities. We didn't have to wait long for this loaded phosphate train heading towards one of the ports on the Atlantic coast.

On the spectacular 33 km mountain section of line 170 between Banská Bystrica and the summit station at Čremošné, the route passes through 22 tunnels, some of them following one another at very short intervals. This is the case with the five Uľanský tunnels, spread over just 1,360 metres and numbered Uľanský Tunnel I to V.

Between the Uľanka and Harmanec zastávka stations, at km 16.8, just outside Uľanský Tunnel IV, the alignment is straight enough to see through the 3 successive portals, with the exit of Uľanský Tunnel II visible beyond Uľanský Tunnel III. The location is particularly difficult to reach, except by rail.

The heritage photo charter hauled by “Pomaranč” T 678.0012 stopped to allow the participants to alight, then set back into the tunnels to position the train for this unusual view, a scene that would be both prohibited and dangerous to attempt with a regular service train. even though Slovak railway staff are often fairly tolerant of railway enthusiasts.

At the beginning of school vacation in 2004, some friends and me visited the border station of Quévy. Freight trains still exchanged locos back then. It was a pleasure to hang out with the station crew, look at the shunting movements and make some photos.

French nez-cassé 22205 is waiting for departure. Train driver and shunter are exchanging friendly words, while also keeping an eye on the photographers. All was peaceful and relaxed.

Now that we had gotten so close to Hof, why not check out the station and get something to eat.

Dinner venues weren't appealing, unfortunately, but we spent our time shooting the next train to Schwandorf instead. A good choice, as the train was posing under the blue hour evening sky.

After the shoot, Bramtrains headed north while I went south. I scored something to eat along the road and slept at a bad, but cheap, hotel in Passau, preparing for the next episode.

During the commute home, I had noticed a couple of times a train pulled by an SNCF TRAXX in the early evening. With the days getting longer, a few photo opportunities presented.

We see a coal train coming from the direction of Gent, towards France. The rail line is starting a big S-curve here, that will end up in Gent-Sint-Pieters station. A really long time ago, the line would run straight, in the alignment of the street that can be seen on the right. It would finally end up in Gent-Zuid station. Today the railway bed has been revived by a bicycle highway – a very convenient and fast way to Gent, I must say. Along the highway, if you look well, you can still find some relics of the old line.
