Updated photos taken on January 15,2010. of the shopping center at the corner of La Brea and Rodeo in Los Angeles, California. The Baldwin Hills area.
Well, the economy must have really tanked, Big Lots pulled the plug on this store, which only operated a few years at this location. Its last tennant was a Savon Drug Store (see below). The parking lot was always crowded and it is located at a very busy intersection with high visability. Big Lots closed on 1/14/2010. Photo of interior of former Big Lots Store.
This shopping center has been through several transformations over the years. Originally the center contained: a SAFEWAY SUPERMARKET, a CLARK DRUGS AND a JJ NEWBERY (a.k.a. Newberrys) Store. When SAFEWAY left this site, the store was converted to Clark Drugs. When Sav-on Drug Stores took over Clark Drugs, the site became a Sav-on Drug Store. Finally Sav-on built a new store across the street. Pic N Save Stores took over the former Sav-on site. Finally, the corporate parent of Pic N Save changed its name and this store is now known as Big Lots.
In the middle was a Clark Drug, which relocated to the SAFEWAY Supermarket site as it was originally in the center section of the main shopping center. The movement of the stores was the result of a major renovation of this shopping center. The renovation occurred around the the 1970s. The SAFEWAY now Big Lots Store is on the far left.
In the center of the original main shopping center was Clarks. Then JJ Newberry took over the Clark Drug Store Site. After JJ Newberry closed down in the late 1990s, the store sat vacant until a small retail chain Treasure Hunt Stores took over.
Lastly, on the far right was a former JJ Newberry Store. This site converted to a BOYS Supermarket. When the BOYS Supermarket's corporate parent Yucaipa took over the Ralphs Grocery Company, mid 1990s, this store became a Ralphs Supermarket. It was remodeled in 2000+.
There is also a McDonalds Restaurant on the corner.
This shopping center located directly across from several retail centers including an Albertsons Supermarket and a Rite Aid Pharmacy with a Del Taco on another corner. CVS Pharmacy is on another corner. The CVS Pharmacy, former Sav-on Drug Store is a stand alone building. On the last corner is a row of shops, eating places, and buildings. Those shops include KFC Chilcken, Payless Shoe Source, etc. One of the buildings in this row of shops was a former Thriftimart Supermarket. It has gone through a series of tenants, including Wherehouse Music, etc.
As a last note, this entire corner was flooded when the Baldwin Hills Dam failed in 1963, but that is another story.
Texas Monthly rated the Hamburger Store as having the 36th best burger in Texas. We passed by on the way to Arkansas (OK, I convinced the group to take the long way there), so we stopped and had a burger.
I had the bacon cheeseburger with jalapenos. I was asked afterwards by my tablemates what I thought of it, since they knew I have a thang for burgers. I said it was an A-.
The salad was fresh, as you can see. The bun was solid and tasted OK… nothing special. The bacon was nicely thick, and cooked well. But I wasn't overly impressed for some reason.
It all boiled down to the meat. It had a good, burger flavor but it lacked any ooze. It didn't seem over cooked, but the mouth just wasn't there. I didn't get that delight I feel when the meat moistens my tongue and caresses my tastebuds. Part of the experience of eating a superb burger is the ooze it brings, and this was dry. Not offensively so, but dry nonetheless.
I have purposely not dinged the burger on account of the fries. I said earlier that the fries were a disappointment. They were. Bagged, frozen, cooked once. No way they were the best in Texas. They probably weren’t the best in Jefferson.
I guess I still rate the burger as an A- or maybe a B+. If you include the fries, I can't see the meal rising above a B.
I am still mystified why Texas Monthly gave out the ratings that they did. I reckon they must have sent their Austin-based staff out to sample burgers, and Austin is not the same as anywhere else in Texas. It would be like sending out Wall Streeters to sample the pasties in the U.P.—they just wouldn't get it.

There were four of five of this set that I really wanted. I did find number 3 a few years ago at a decent price, but no luck with the others. Just one of the sets I liked was over $40. Then, I was looking for some other Re-ment set last week, and came across this full set listed as "used" because three of the packages had been open and displayed. It was an auction, so I decided to bid, since the cheapest full sets have been listed for quite some time at $208! Ugh. Not happening. I didn't have anything to lose by bidding, so I did, and weirdly, I won! $36 is what I paid for the full set of 10, most of which had never been opened. I don't understand what some of the things are; they aren't familiar products. Much of the writing is Japanese, but some is in English, and with recognizable products. All in all, it was definitely worth it!

These huge blown up figures of a Santa and Snowman were in one of the outdoor windows of a major store at the local mall. Of course all these decorations are gone and now it is time for Valentine & St. Patrick decorations. Nothing lasts for long.

This Albertsons closed down earlier this year. It was one of 4 local locations to be shut down the past couple of years. Funny enough no Safeways in the area closed. A true sign of the times
This is pretty much what an abandoned store looks like. I really want to get in there, but don't want to get arrrested. Weird to not be able to go in there, I used to shop in there all the time. In fact my wife worked there for a few months.
Any ideas to get in there without throwing any alarms ?
This is my local Sears store, which is also one of five anchors at the Mall at Fairfield Commons (the other four are Dick's Sporting Goods, Macy's, JCPenney, and Elder-Beerman). I've been here a few times (I'm not at the mall that often, but I wish it were more often) but it wasn't until now that I've discovered what is "uniquely Sears" about this store.
I discovered how large its appliance department is. There are SO MANY stoves, microwaves, washer/dryer pairs, dishwashers, and refrigerators!! Obvioulsy since appliances are Sears's specialty, this department is so big (much like Kmart's huge clothing department because it is known for that). The other notably large departments at Sears are the mattresses, tools, and apparel (the whole second floor is apparel and jewelry!).
I obviously need to visit my local Sears more often. ;)

Dick Hrin's Big Little Store was another place where Moody Junior High students got their candy, snacks, and pop (as well as cigarettes with phony ID or "a note from Mom or Dad") after school. Big Little Store is still in business, although I think it changed hands in recent years.
Another Disney Store order, which got delivered today. The reason I got two so close together, is because, 3 days after placing my first order at the Disney Store, they finally released baby Sven on the UK webstore. And I just had to have him, so I bought him along with a few small things.
