Here's fascinating info from Cornell about White-throated Sparrows:
"The White-throated Sparrow comes in two color forms: white-crowned and tan-crowned. The two forms are genetically determined, and they persist because individuals almost always mate with a bird of the opposite morph. Males of both color types prefer females with white stripes, but both kinds of females prefer tan-striped males. White-striped birds are more aggressive than tan-striped ones, and white-striped females may be able to outcompete their tan-striped sisters for tan-striped males."

It looks like this bird is of the white-striped form. Since we don't know whether it is a male or female, it could be either an aggressive female or a laid-back male!
From a NC tax forms and instructions booklet that was mailed to our apartment back in 1993, when governments still mailed the things, and when most people actually still filled their taxes out by hand and mailed them in at the Post Office. Note the track feeder holes on the side!

Ross Craig (1926-2012) was a local historian born in Stockton and dedicated much of his life promoting and conserving the history of Stockton, NSW. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about the suburb and was a founding member of the Stockton Historical Society and co-editor of its magazine. Pat Craig supported her husband’s passion for history, and together they made a great contribution to the Stockton and Newcastle communities. We thank the Craig Family and Stockton Historical Society who have kindly given Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, access to the collection and allowed us to publish the images. Ivy Broomrape, Orobanche hederae, growing on the verge of Garnier Road, Winchester, Hampshire. This is the less common yellow form. Without the internet, I would have failed to identify it as my key to broomrapes fails to mention that this species has a yellow form. I would have been quite unable to cope with it not having a purple stem, despite the fact that it didn't seem to fit any of the other species descriptions.
As I've not found many examples of this pictured on the net, I have posted a lot of photos - you're welcome to use them. Sadly the light wasn't great on either of the days I went with my camera.

Andean Condor
Andean condors are among the largest birds in the world that are able to fly. The condor relies on its huge wings—they have the largest wing area of any bird—and strong winds to stay aloft. While soaring overhead, the condor uses its excellent eyesight to search the land below for carcasses.
•After eating, the condor rubs its bald head and neck back and forth across the ground to wipe off any messy bits.
•Riding the winds, the condor only needs to flap its wings about once an hour.
•High fliers, Andean condors soar at heights up to 18,000 feet. That’s higher than 12 Sears Towers’ stacked on top of one another!

Flamenco, in its strictest sense, is an art form based on the various folkloric music traditions of southern Spain, developed within the gitano subculture of the region of Andalusia, but also having a historical presence in Extremadura and Murcia. In a wider sense, it is a portmanteau term used to refer to a variety of both contemporary and traditional musical styles typical of southern Spain. Flamenco is closely associated to the gitanos of the Romani ethnicity who have contributed significantly to its origination and professionalization. However, its style is uniquely Andalusian and flamenco artists have historically included Spaniards of both gitano and non-gitano heritage.
The oldest record of flamenco music dates to 1774 in the book Las Cartas Marruecas by José Cadalso. The development of flamenco over the past two centuries is well documented: "the theatre movement of sainetes (one-act plays) and tonadillas, popular song books and song sheets, customs, studies of dances, and toques, perfection, newspapers, graphic documents in paintings and engravings. ... in continuous evolution together with rhythm, the poetic stanzas, and the ambiance.”
On 16 November 2010, UNESCO declared flamenco one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

These photos taken circa 1979 are reflections of the WTC and the crosshairs on one of the Towers are mortar grooves in the granite walkway.
Female Smew. There was a group of three male Smews with this lone female; they'd obviously decided that Spring was very much with us on a beautiful day at Slimbridge
Got stopped in Tower Hill tube station just before 9am in the morning... they explained to me that they were conducting random searches on members of the public under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2004. So got my bags searched, and have had to wait while they fill in this form... I was also asked about where I work, where I had arrived from prior arriving into the tube station, whether I had some form of ID with me. They had jotted down everything that I had said.
I wonder where they are going to use the information I've given? Where does this piece of paper go? I felt like I've done something wrong for being stopped... The only threat that I may cause and can think of is perhaps snoring on the train?!

Formed 1.5 billion years ago from a dome of molten magma, the large granite boulders at Elephant Rocks State Park resemble a train of pink elephants. The reddish or pink granite has been quarried in this area since 1869, and has provided red architectural granite for buildings all across the country, particularly in nearby St. Louis, Missouri. Stones unsuitable for architectural use were made into paving stones that were used on the streets of St. Louis, as well as the wharf along the Mississippi River. The granite from this area is commercially known as Missouri Red monument stone.
One of the largest boulders, named “Dumbo,” measures 27 feet tall, 35 feet long and 17 feet wide, tipping the scales at a hefty 680 tons.
Elephant Rocks State Park was created in 1967 following donation of the land by geologist John Stafford, and is managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. It is located in Iron County, Missouri, and is part of the Saint Francois Mountains, which rise over the Ozark Plateau in southeastern Missouri. This mountain range is one of the oldest exposures of igneous rock in North America. The park has a one-mile paved Braille Trail designed for people with visual and physical disabilities.

PS: Ben Nicholson (1894-1982), after his 2nd marriage to Barbara Hepworth in 1938, moved to St Ives in 1939 living at Trezion, Salubrious Place, for 19 years. Hepworth herself lived in Trewyn Studios in St Ives from 1949 until her death in 1975. They were divorced in 1951.
