This image forms part of the digitised photographs of the Ross and Pat Craig Collection. Ross Craig (1926-2012) was a local historian born in Stockton and dedicated much of his life promoting and conserving the history of Stockton, NSW. He possessed a wealth of knowledge about the suburb and was a founding member of the Stockton Historical Society and co-editor of its magazine. Pat Craig supported her husband’s passion for history, and together they made a great contribution to the Stockton and Newcastle communities. We thank the Craig Family and Stockton Historical Society who have kindly given Cultural Collections at the University of Newcastle, NSW, Australia, access to the collection and allowed us to publish the images. Thanks also to Vera Deacon for her liaison in attaining this important collection.

Formed by runoff from Mount Etna and the Nebrodi Mountains, the Alcantara River is one of the few rivers on Sicily that runs year round. Several thousand years ago the rivers path was blocked by a large lava flow from the slopes of Mount Etna. The cool water of the river helped to quickly cool the lava, which resulted in the lava crystallizing and forming the unique ballast rock columns that are visible today. Over the next few thousand years the river proceeded to carve a path through the columns resulting in the gorge that visitors see today.

You can walk or get a lift down to the river side at the entrance to the gorge. And there is also an informative nature trail that takes you along above the gorge through some lovely wooded areas.

For my next installment of photos from my trip, I combined two days: a day of train travel where I stopped in Cebere and Montpellier France; and a visit to the convent of La Tourette (another famous work of Swiss architect Le Corbusier). Hope you enjoy the set, and perhaps you should sit down for the slide show (this one isn't quite long as the lyon one)!

On the second day of Navaratri we pray to the divine mother in the form of Bramacharini Devi, she gives us the strength to pursue our path and encourages us to stay committed to our Sadhana. Guruji on this night had given us deeper meaning of Her. She was the who had done severe penance in order to attain Lord Shiva who became "closed" after She in the form of Sati had burnt herself to ashes. Her penance was not for herself but for the entire universe so they may attain the lord. She is the one who gives us clarity on our spiritual path so that we may attain the supreme Lord for without clarity nothing can be achieved.
