Artist’s Statement

I planned my Real Me collage in a thirds grid. In the left corner I placed my desk because that is where I spend a lot of my time. Everything else on this collage sprouts from that desk. I put some of my favorite books on top of the desk with my favorite poem (Homer’s Illiad) most notable among them. Sprouting directly from the top of the desk I put images of ancient myths with multiple pictures of my favorite hero (Heracles, 3 in total) to show my interest in ancient cultured and their stories.
On the actual desk I piled an epic poem of my own that I have been working on for a little over two years, directly above this in the picture frame I put an image of the main character of this story. I put my hand on my work to show that it came from my own work. I put a spotlight leading from my work and hand, up through my other hand which is gesturing to the first two text boxes. The spotlight is meant to represent a path; this path leads from my story through Strength of Spirit and then Limitless Ambitions because my story is one of my ambitions that I have already achieved, then Strength of Spirit is placed in-between myself and Limitless Ambition because Strength of Spirit is one of the qualities that will lead me to achieve what I want. I made the Strength of Spirit the same color as the flames, comparing my spirit to fire.
I put the final three text boxes in a triangle with a cosmic purple background because they represent a more spiritual part of me. I placed Understanding and Acceptance below At One because I believe these two principals need to be present before you can be At One. I put At One in the center and at the highest point because that is something I see as quite important.

Statement:Infinity's Head and Neck have Different Hues of Whites, Flavored Butter Popcorns, Cream Cheeses, Cream, Cheesecakes, Butters and Margarines. The Fin's Ears and Eyebrows are Peanut Butters, Creams, Peanut Shells, Cashew Crunches, Coffees and Peanut Brittles. The Fin's Eyes and Nose are Different Hues of Browns, Hot Fudges, Fudges, Chocolates, Dark Browns, Soils and Dark Chocolates. Infinity is a Dog's Name. Infinity is my Dog. He is a Golden Retriever. Fin feels happy. I feel proud. I love Infinity. I miss Infinity.

This is a colourful statement necklace! Most of the components are handmade. I make the beads from wood pulp and paper pulp and then paint them by hand with extra love and care! I also made some beads from polymer clay. This necklace is big and beautiful and at the same time light thanks to the chosen material!

Paul Smith has transformed Arne Jacobsen’s bar series into a gorgeous fantasy in black, and one can enjoy a drink while considering thoughts such as ”Take pleasure seriously” and ”Start something new” which are engraved into the black surface.

"Also, als erstes mal möchte ich sagen, dass wir diesen feigen Terroranschlag in Magdeburg aufs schärfste verurteilen." sagt Ken. "Wir beten für die Opfer und ihre Angehörigen."
"Wir müssen jetzt aber trotzdem über den Täter reden." sagt Abdi. "Der bringt ganz Deutschland durcheinander. Mich ja auch. Als erstes hörte ich, der ist aus Saudi Arabien, 50 Jahre alt und Arzt. Wie kann ein Arzt sowas machen?"
"Er ist Psychiater." sagt Ken. "Und auch das geschieht nicht zum ersten Mal. Auch Karadžić war Psychiater."
"Aber dann kam raus, dieser Taleb Al-Abdulmohsen ist ein Islam-Hasser, AfD-Anhänger und Zionist." sagt Abdi. "Und mit seinem kranken Hirn, wo die AfD-Hetze von der "Islamisierung Deutschlands" wucherte wie Dornengestrüpp, hatte er dann die Idee, er müsste die Deutschen bestrafen. Wie krank ist das denn?
Aber, Shashaa, erzähl! Du kanntest den ja vorher schon."
"Ja, ja, der hat einen Film bei der BBC gemacht. Den hab ich gesehen." sagt Shashaa. "Ich fand den damals gut, weil die Mädchen da ganz ähnliche Geschichten hatten wie ich.Der Film richtete sich gegen den Islam, und dieser Typ stellte sich als Retter von den Mädchen dar. Er half ihnen in den Westen zu kommen, weg vom "bösen" Islam, weg von Saudi Arabien oder den Emiraten, wo Frauen so böse unterdrückt werden.
Heute sehe ich den Film aber mit ganz anderen Augen. Ich bin jetzt zwei Jahre bei dir, Ken, und deiner Familie. Ihr seid auch eine muslimische Familie. Ich habe gelernt, dass das auch anders geht als bei mir zuhause in Minneapolis. All das Schlimme, was ich erlebt habe, hat gar nichts mit dem Islam zu tun, aber viel mit dem Missbrauch vom Islam. Mein Vater begründete alles mit Islam, aber er hat gelogen, er wollte sich und seine Gewaltexzesse irgendwie rechtfertigen. Und ich als Kind, dumm wie man da ist, habe das geglaubt.
Mein Vater war aber nur drogensüchtig, ein Alkoholiker und gewalttätig. Ein schlechter Mensch.
Und die gibt's leider überall.
Und meine Mutter, die hat zu allem ja und Amen gesagt. Ich verstehe nicht, wieso sie sich nicht scheiden lassen hat. Er hat sie doch auch dauernd geschlagen!
Da in dem BBC-Film erzählt ein Mädchen, ihre Eltern haben sie gezwungen, Hidjab zu tragen, aber auf dem Schulweg hat sie es sich dann runtergerissen. Ja, genau wie bei mir, dachte ich damals.
Ja, das gibt's, dass Eltern ihre Töchter dazu zwingen. Die meisten Mädchen werden aber nicht gezwungen. Bei euch tragen ja auch nur zwei Hidjab, Michaela und Casey, und Kelley ab und zu. Ich war auch mit Casey am Gymnasium Neuperlach, wo ganz viele Mädchen mit Hidjab rumlaufen. Die sind sowas von überzeugt!
Und überhaupt, was die Deutschen den Islam nur am Kopftuch festmachen! So eine dämliche Äußerlichkeit! Aber das verhindert, dass man sich mit den Inhalten auseinandersetzt!"
"Richtig." sagt Ken. "Und dieses Feindbild "Islamisierung Deutschlands" wuchert ganz besonders da, wo man nix über den Islam weiß. Vor allem im Osten, wo kaum Muslime wohnen. Und die AfD nutzt das schamlos aus.
Dabei haben sie auch gute Ideen, aber das wird alles durch ihren Rassismus, Ausländerfeindlichkeit und Islamophobie zunichte gemacht.
Beatrix von Storch redete neulich erst davon, dass sich die Deutschen auf ihre eigene Kultur und Traditionen besinnen sollen. Das ist ein guter Ansatz."
"Ja, genau," sagt Abdi, "das ist doch genau sowas, wie Yinka und Shirley es neulich mit dem Nikolaus erklärt haben.
