In my former life as an art gallery owner, I learned a deep dislike for abstract art. I'd display almost anything, but seeing a work of random shapes and colours come through my door was always a little disappointing. They were always missing an understanding of patterns that appear in the chaos of nature, things like crystalline formation and the behavior of water. All around us is a wondrous randomness worth imitating, swirls and strokes, ripples and undulations, sharp shards and brutal crevices to admire. All that thrown out for the sake of playing with paint. When a customer encountered abstract work of the typical approach, I'd often get the half-embarrassed statement of: "I don't know anything about art." It was heartbreaking to hear, because a lack of feeling on the creator's part encourages them to believe there was some great secret to it. But the only secret is there isn't one. No hidden knowledge or pending unveiling – just the wonder that comes from keeping our eyes open.
