My son is fully an adult.
He was born two years after 9/11.
When you’re a kid the past is a jumble that’s hard to sort out. It’s all before times.
When I was in high school I read a lot. I read a lot of books that made a big impact on me. Some of those were assigned, though I did skip big chunks of assigned reading (I should get back to the Transcendentalists some day). I picked things up all over, like this: James Simon Kunen’s _The Strawberry Statement: notes of a college revolutionary_. I read it as a view into the distant past, history. I was sixteen or seventeen, 1980, 1981. So my “distant past” was 12, 13 years earlier - most of my lifetime, which was already so full.
I dipped into it today, and once again was engaged by Kunen’s dry humor, his ironic style, the hope and anger and dismay that has never stopped resonating, probably never will. I’ll probably send it to my nineteen-year-old college student, to see if he also finds a nineteen-year-old college student from 1968 wry and relatable.

Artist Statement: I decided to make this art work because I took the two places that fascinate me and those places are the moon and the ocean. The shark/squid represent the ocean and the astronauts and moon surface represent space. I interpreted this years prompt as something that could never truly happen in space and I know that a half shark half squid floating in space could never actually happen in real life so that is why I decided to base my artwork on that.
This is a reply to an image of a special event in Hong Kong.
The bottom line is that some events or stores - as Central Place Theory of Walter Christallers describes - can only exist when many people could use them. He describes simple examples such as operas or department stores that only exist in larger towns and cities, because the market in a 15-people-village is just not large enough.
Assuming his statement is true, this store is quite unique: it sews (only) suspenders. I don't think there's a lot of competition in this business, is there?

The IAEA Event: Net Zero Needs Nuclear Power will highlight the crucial role of nuclear power as part of the energy mix. The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mr Rafael Mariano Grossi will announce the ‘IAEA Statement on Nuclear Power’ supported by 40 countries, both those already operating nuclear power plants and newcomers. Together these countries acknowledge that all available low-carbon technologies, including nuclear power, should be recognized, and actively supported. The Statement underlines the benefits of nuclear power, including that nuclear power plants produce no harmful greenhouse gas emissions; that nuclear energy contributes to energy security and the stability of power grids; and that it mitigates air pollution at a local level.

Artist Statement
We created “Sophia’s World” as a tribute to the community that supported our family throughout the life of our daughter, Sophia Herzog Sachs. Sophia lived beautifully for over four years with Niemann-Pick Disease, Type A.
Throughout her life, we reached out to anyone that we thought could help, whether we knew the person personally or not. We searched for curative and palliative care therapies, ideas, inspiration, and hope. We were gratified by the way that people responded. A network of caring support consisting of friends both old and new, family, and community, began to form around Sophia and our family —healthcare providers and alternative healing practitioners, researchers, insurers, social service and public agencies, spiritual advisors and artists —came into this circle of caring support.
As this happened, we witnessed something extraordinary— an environment had been created around Sophia that enabled people to bring not only their minds, but also their hearts into the healing process. This “Healing Community” had created a nurturing environment for a child with a life threatening condition that celebrated life and brought hope and learning to everyone involved.
The 24 art projects depicted in “Sophia’s World” became the banners under which our community thrived—celebrations of the joy and creativity that abounded. They provided access to the sadness and miracle of Sophia’s life and life itself to people of every age, gender, nationality, spiritual tradition and walk of life. Access that proved enriching to all. Each project inspired another. Projects were seeded for other children and families in other communities around the world. Much of the art graced our house during Sophia’s life and much remains as a tribute to Sophia in her community.
We will always be grateful to the artists who gave Sophia and our family such a resonant voice in the world.

There's this bespectacled dude that tapes up these little political statements on a few Portage Ave. kiosks, which stick around until they get moldy. He's on to something.
Note-Grids are a tool for collecting and connecting objects of thought (in this case, words).
They treat words and other manifestations of thought as objects that can be freely manipulated to create new meaning.
They break meaning up into individual words to facilitate a more fluid, intuitive, and improvisational approach to knowledge production.

I spotted this sign on Rothschild in the midst of the 'tent city' protest. I could be wrong, but something tells me that there may have been a bit of 'leaf' involved in coming up with this.
