HQR 2017 Summer Ball

My home setup now that the iMac has been relegated to guest duty. PowerMac G4 Quicksilver, Harman Kardon Soundsticks II, Logitech MX700 mouse & Cordless Elite Keyboard, Palm Tungsten T3

Eventual spec for this 2002 quicksilver will be Dual 1.8GHz G4 processors, 1.5GB Ram, DL Superdrive, ATI Radeon 9600 pro mac edition, 108mbps wifi, usb 2.0 / firewire 800, 1TB + storage... am getting there slowly but surely.

Don't want to get one of apples new machines as they just don't have anything in this class anymore in terms of aesthetics or expandability. Plus i've always had a soft spot for the quicksilvers

Old office setup. This is my setup before the arrival of the new shiny. Main reasons for upgrading were: -

a) PC needed an overhaul to get latest games to run. GFX were fine but CPU, MB and RAM needed upgrading and I wanted to add an SSD. Things is ... I hate Windows and never use the PC when I'm not gaming so spending all that money on a games machine would have been pointless.

b) ASW bought me a nice new 13" MacBook Pro recently so I was selling my own MacBook 13" Unibody and needed a personal Mac.

c) Emma has pretty much stopped using the PC because it was too much of a pain in the arse to have to swap the monitor channel (Dell 2410 touch buttons are pish) and go plug in the keyboard and mouse (which I often unhooked cos they were getting in my way). Also, I wanted a desktop machine that could be the hub for all media, documents, backups, iPod/Pad/Phone connections etc. that was easy for Emma to use.

Next up ... the shiny :)

I made little glass shelves for my display at a holiday store i participated in- picked everything up, and the glass shelves are still coming in handy...

Setup shot for this and then later for this.

The set up for this shot, sorry about it being fisheye, it was the only way I could fit it in.

The shoe is sat on a sheet of glass, which is over some white vinyl. Then ive got one strobe directly behind pointing up at the wall to blast that out. Then the other strobe poits strighat up. It took me some time to workout how to light the shoe it's self. I went through a lot of variations with my little softboexes, pointing down from directly above, or from each side. In the end I took off the softbox & pointed straight up to the white celling. Suddenly I had super soft shadows. I could have done with a 3rd light pointing at the front of the shoe to bring out the reflection a little more.

Photo Spec:-

Fallen Rivals

Strobist:

430ex behind the subject pointing straight up at the wall - 1/4 power, 430ex camera left pointing straight up at the celling 1/1.

behind the scenes video

-----

These images are from a November 8th Session with Carol. Carol was looking for images to accompany a new Yoga business and needed images for web and brochures.

Her first idea was to have images of her in yoga positions on top of a rail engine (train), but after multiple contacts she was unable to get clearance from any rail yards in the state because of liability.

Instead we went with something much more simple and clean.

Sometimes is better to go with a simple idea than getting locked into your inital first idea - especially when it involves large steam engines and trying to get permission and dealing with companies. In this case, doing something more clean and simple will help her in the long run, and eventually she warmed to the idea. Its difficult giving up your first idea of inspiration, but sometimes it simply isn't within your means to produce.

Ever wonder how the photographers isolate a person in the photo? Well, many of you probably already know...that we're pretty inventive and creative (photographers as general rule), but we tend to not like to work harder than we must...so...make it simple, black backdrop (or white).

Michael suggested I should use this one as a show and tell, of how the photos are typically setup. Of course the lights aren't necessarily evident here...and this was actually simply a hand held shot, with the off-camera flash to the left.

A number of recent shots I took were taken with this clam shell setup at a PDX Strobist photoshoot. The clam shell is made up of two speedlites with umbrellas. Luckly we had a stand with a boom. We had a light on the white paper background and also a hair light hanging from the top with a small softbox on it.

My only question is, why the vampire's victim is lying in the coffin? Is that some sort of Transsylvanian way to store the food? :D

Setup photo for these dracula themed photos: photo1 & photo2.

Setup shot for the Pat Ivey Portrait, notes should explain everything - I just wish the wall had been painted a bit better, although it kind of adds to the finished shot!
