Old office setup. This is my setup before the arrival of the new shiny. Main reasons for upgrading were: -

a) PC needed an overhaul to get latest games to run. GFX were fine but CPU, MB and RAM needed upgrading and I wanted to add an SSD. Things is ... I hate Windows and never use the PC when I'm not gaming so spending all that money on a games machine would have been pointless.

b) ASW bought me a nice new 13" MacBook Pro recently so I was selling my own MacBook 13" Unibody and needed a personal Mac.

c) Emma has pretty much stopped using the PC because it was too much of a pain in the arse to have to swap the monitor channel (Dell 2410 touch buttons are pish) and go plug in the keyboard and mouse (which I often unhooked cos they were getting in my way). Also, I wanted a desktop machine that could be the hub for all media, documents, backups, iPod/Pad/Phone connections etc. that was easy for Emma to use.

Next up ... the shiny :)

I made little glass shelves for my display at a holiday store i participated in- picked everything up, and the glass shelves are still coming in handy...

Setup shot for this and then later for this.

The set up for this shot, sorry about it being fisheye, it was the only way I could fit it in.

The shoe is sat on a sheet of glass, which is over some white vinyl. Then ive got one strobe directly behind pointing up at the wall to blast that out. Then the other strobe poits strighat up. It took me some time to workout how to light the shoe it's self. I went through a lot of variations with my little softboexes, pointing down from directly above, or from each side. In the end I took off the softbox & pointed straight up to the white celling. Suddenly I had super soft shadows. I could have done with a 3rd light pointing at the front of the shoe to bring out the reflection a little more.

Dave is holding a reflector about 8-10 inches in front of a lightstand and there is a vivitar 285HV bounced into the reflector at something like 1/4 or 1/2 power. Triggered by cyber syncs. This gave us a pretty big (aka soft) light source from a small strobe!

My only question is, why the vampire's victim is lying in the coffin? Is that some sort of Transsylvanian way to store the food? :D

I Got my friend to take a picture on my iphone for me. For some reason I decided to climb up this train ladder and look and see what shot i could create. I was using my 50mm 1.8 on manual and once i had it set, then I only needed one hand on the camera (Nikon D40x). Now i could lean out further from the train.

Well I like what turned out so I thought I would share it with you guys! Hope you all are having a merry Christmas!

Lighting setup shot for the portrait of Nat. The sync cable is plugged into the radio slave because the little bugger refused to fire without it - I presume because it was right up against the metal of the car roof.

Lighting setup for today's bird feeder shoot.

The same very simple setup that I used yesterday, but with a second light, if you can call it that, sneaking into the frame :)

Main light is a 20W CFL desklamp which is lighting a green card backdrop.

In addition, just visable at the top, is a small LED flashlight directly above the lump of glass which is giving the blue highlights.

Guess it is worth mentioning, the white balance on the camera is set to tungsten, which is a close match to the CFL bulb used here.

The subject is placed on a clear glass shelf which is picking up the reflected colour from the backdrop.

The 2 sheets of black card which are folded in half to create a V shape are placed either side to add black reflections or should that be lowlights, in the subject.

The clear glass base might not have been a such a good idea and I might have another go using a black mirror base, we shall see.

This is the setup shot for my submission for David Hobby's 3rd Boot Camp Assignment. The assignment was to photograph a residential dwelling and light it creatively (using off-camera strobes, of course). As my apartment doesn't have three square feet of clean, presentable floor area, I decided to shoot Amber's house. After studying the rooms (having initially deciding to shoot the living room), I decided on incorporating my favorite part of Amber's decorating--the Live, Laugh, Love signs that adorn the doorways to the rooms off the hallway. They are appropriate, too, as "Live" is above the living room doorway, "Laugh" is above the ferret's room, and "Love" is...well...you get the picture.

After deciding on what I wanted to photograph, I found it quite difficult to find an angle in which to show all three signs as well as a part of the room they relate to. My new Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 proved essential in this instance. The hallway is very small and angled--without the extreme wide angle, this shot would have proved impossible.

After dragging out just about every piece of gear I own, I ended up using only 1 flash on a lightstand (with a white umbrella or a grid as a modifier). I combined multiple exposures (six) to get the final result.

strobist: 1 gridded Vivitar 285 pointed at each sign, 1/4 power. 1 Vivitar 285, shot through a white umbrella, full power in the ferret's room and bedroom, and 1/2 power in the living room. Triggered via Cybersyncs. Final shot here.
