"Brooklyn War Memorial
This granite and limestone memorial in Brooklyn’s Cadman Plaza is dedicated to the 300,000 American men and women who served in World War II. The memorial was designed by Stuart Constable, Gilmore D. Clarke, and W. Earle Andrews, who worked in concert with the architectural firm of Eggers and Higgins. The two larger-than-life sized high relief figures by sculptor Charles Keck (1875–1951) depict a male warrior on the left and a female with a child to the right, and serve as symbols of victory and family.
The idea for a large-scale borough monument was based on Parks Commissioner Robert Moses’s (1888–1981) desire to create unified World War II monuments for each borough in the hope to avoid the situation that arose after World War I when many scattered small-scale pieces were erected throughout the city. In the end, Brooklyn was the only borough to build such a monument. On June 6, 1944, the day U.S. forces stormed the beaches of Normandy, France (D-Day), Brooklyn Eagle publisher Frank D. Schroth formed a committee of distinguished Brooklynites to judge a design competition. The Eagle announced the competition in June, soliciting proposals from a wide array of people. When the contest closed on April 1, 1945 -- before VE (Victory in Europe) Day -- over 243 entries were received. The winning plan featured a central auditorium flanked by two wings built entirely of granite. Construction of the memorial began just after Japan surrendered in August 1945.
The memorial was dedicated November 12, 1951 at an elaborate ceremony attended by elected officials and veterans groups. Due to lack of funding, the full plan was never built. The scaled-back version of the memorial consists of a memorial hall with an honor roll listing the names of those who died serving during the war. The memorial was intended to be part of a larger plan to revitalize this area of Brooklyn, which included the Brooklyn Civic Center building, new municipal facilities, and expanded housing opportunities.
Sculptor Keck is known for his statue of Father Francis P. Duffy (1936) in Manhattan’s Duffy Square, the Governor Alfred E. Smith Memorial (1946) in Manhattan, and the Sixty-first District Memorial (1922) in Brooklyn’s Greenwood Playground. The Brooklyn War Memorial was restored in 1977 and today serves as a community facility for veterans’ groups and arts organizations as well as a memorial to those who defended the principle of freedom during the war. Ghost of a Dream
Artist bio
Ghost of a Dream is the collaboration of artists Lauren Was and Adam Eckstrom. Together they make installation, sculpture, and collage. Eckstrom received an MFA Painting (2005), and Was an MFA Sculpture (2004), from RISD. They have exhibited in Beijing(CN), Copenhagen(DK), Bologna(IT), Berlin(DE), and The US. They have been included in numerous group shows. They have been awarded the Young Masters Prize, an IAAB Residency, Artist Projects Material Fund from RISD, Oxbow Fellowship, and a DUMBO Improvement Grant. There work has been written about in publications such as Whitewall Magazine, World of Interiors, City Weekend Beijing, The Independent in London, Global Times Beijing, Time Out, and Intersection Magazine.

Aprirà la giornata di studi la società Metro C che nell’ambito dei lavori della nuova linea della metropolitana di Roma ha in corso per i prossimi dieci anni il monitoraggio statico e strutturale assieme al monitoraggio dell’inquinamento atmosferico, del rumore, delle vibrazioni e delle acque sotterranee; inoltre, nell’ambito della elaborazione dei Testimoniali di Stato, un documento autografo che fotografa lo stato di conservazione della Colonna ad aprile 2024, sono state registrate le condizioni di salute della Colonna prima dell’avvio del lungo periodo dei lavori in programma per la stazione di Piazza Venezia.

I Testimoniali, che saranno presentati anche nella forma di volumi cartacei corredati da testi e immagini, sono accompagnati da un rilievo 3d fotogrammetrico che a distanza di 5 anni aggiorna quello realizzato dal PArCo nel 2019. Seguiranno gli interventi del PArCo che, a partire dal 2023, dopo un primo triennio di attività volto a raccogliere dati e informazioni sulla conservazione della Colonna anche con indagini diagnostiche, ha previsto – con il coordinamento della funzionaria restauratrice Angelica Pujia – un piano triennale di ricerca, prove di laboratorio e manutenzione sia della scala a chiocciola interna, sia del fusto istoriato con piattaforma elevatrice (2023-2026).

Il cantiere è anche l’occasione per proseguire con il progetto Post Columnam che indaga le tracce materiali lasciate sul marmo della Colonna tra il Medioevo e l’età moderna, documentandone così le modifiche, il riuso e le rifunzionalizzazioni avvenute nel corso dei secoli.

La direzione lavori del cantiere è dell’arch. Aura Picchione. Infine, la nota affezione del popolo romeno ai temi trattati sulla Colonna raffiguranti il racconto delle campagne daciche di Traiano, ha portato ad una collaborazione istituzionale che si è concretizzata in un cofinanziamento destinato a coprire parte dei fondi necessari per il restauro della statua di San Pietro in cima alla Colonna. Nell’anno del Giubileo il bronzo monumentale sarà oggetto di un intervento di manutenzione straordinaria: la progettazione è già in corso e in occasione della giornata di studi saranno condivisi i primi dati preliminari.

We'll develop clothing that can constantly project the video of our choosing (unless it turns out being so annoying that we ban it). Imagine wearing a robe covered in a display that actually projects the night sky in realtime. Imagine talking to people over the "phone" just by making a hand gesture and activating electronics in your lapel, then merely thinking about what you want to say (thought-to-speech interfaces). bar cafe design, Polish designer and Stepien Paulina Magdalena Piwowar from Wunderteam, has designed a cafe and bookstore for the Muzeum Sztuki in Lodz, Poland. Conversion of ground floor of the building design of the building to modernize and adapt to new functions. A great piece of vintage material in a quilted Holly Hobby country pattern. It is 42 1/2" x 55". Good condition. Slight musty smell so it will need to be washed.
The Institute of Making opens at UCL giving a permanent home to the Materials Library, a collection of the most unusual materials in the world, and the MakeSpace, the ultimate making workshop.
The library contains over 1500 materials including uranium glass, steel cloth, magnetic liquid, concrete that can heal itself using embedded bacteria, and rock that acts as a naturally occurring optical fibre.
Alongside the library sits the MakeSpace, which gives members the chance to boil, bake, turn, mill, mend, spin, print, cut, cast, drill, sand, scrape and make. The facilities include 3D printing, sewing machines, ovens, soldering irons and even a crane.
