2014 Seagrave

In true Wisconsin fashion, we stashed beer in the Animas River on the trip into the Mtns, so when we came out we would have something to drink while waiting for the train. Here, the Knutson family is enjoying, appropriately, Steam Engine Lager from the Steamworks Brewery in Durango, while we wait for the steam engine pulling the D&SNG passenger train from Silverton to Durango.

Gray Marine Engine were built by Gray Marine Motor Company of Detroit, Michigan.

I'm not sure if this Gray Marine engine, let alone any V8 engine, was ever offered in a Divco. According to the Divco Club of America the Continental 4- and 6-cylinder and Hercules 6-cylinder engines were standard in the 1950s, while in the 1960s 6-cylinder ohv Nash engines were used in addition, as well as the option for a Detroit-Diesel 3-53N 3-cylinder 2-stroke diesel.

The San Francisco Fire Department lost two of its members from Engine Company 26, who were both critically injured during an explosion while bravely fighting a house fire in the Diamond Heights neighborhood on June 2, 2011. Both died at the hospital as a result of their injuries after all rescussitative measures were taken by the Emergency Trauma staff at San Francisco General Hospital.

Days later firefighters from around California and around the country gathered to pay their respects during a funeral service. In this sequence we see some of the equipment from the North Bay Area and points further north.

San Jose fire firefighters responded to a report of smoke in the area of Hellyer County Park. Arriving fire fighters found a wind driven grass fire moving erraticly as the strong winds circled the area.

A TIER 2 response ensued with multiple wildland units, fire engines and water tenders on scene to contain the blaze. A couple of houses lost fences in the blaze, but damage was really kept to a minimmum.

In service for only a couple of days at the time of this incident, Engine 26 was the recipent of one of San Jose's brand new Hi-Tech built pumpers. I am including the specifications for the engine below for those who are interested.

NEGISHI HOUSING FRIENDSHIP DAY 2010

Around 5:00am neighbors awoke to hear the screams of a small girl. Rushing outside they discovered a Mattos Drive home with fire bursting through the windows on both floors of the house. Neighbors from across the back fence had climbed the fence and were helping the residences climb down a "human ladder" from the second floor bedrooms to escape the blaze.

Milpitas Fire Fighters summoned to the scene discovered the home fully involved upon arrival, and set about protecting exposures and finally controlling the blaze. By 8:00am the fire was extinguished.

Milpitas Engine 2 is a 2010 Pierce Arrow XT. It is unique in the region in that it has 4 wheel steer to enable it to travel easily on some of the mountain roads in the Milpitas Foothills.
