The heavily bristled abdomen gives it its name. Actually, it feeds on caterpillars of the gypsy moth, the pine owl and the nun. Here I am not quite sure. Since it had just rained, she could also absorb water from the flower.

Today, I'm uploading (once again) a photo from the “Isn't it cute!” section. I photographed this little guy during a visit to a wildlife park. Actually, I only saw adult boars there. Big, shaggy, mud-covered beasts that you wouldn't necessarily want to encounter in the wild. It was only after a while that I noticed this one fawn, hopping along with its mother among the big ones and constantly jumping back and forth to avoid being trampled or crushed. Even its own mother didn't seem to show much consideration. The excellent camouflage of this young member of the pack did not seem to be helpful to me at this point.

More photographs of these wild beasts can be found in my boar album

Today I'm doing a little flashback with you to a dreamlike sunrise at what is probably the best place for sunrise on the island of Madaera, the Ponta de São Lourenço.

This photo was actually only intended as a backup in case my panorama attempts should not be successful beforehand. So, like I always do, after the panoramas I took a shot for a single image. Since the panorama worked, I no longer needed this version and so it has been lying around on my hard drive unedited to this day.

Today the image fell into my hands (or rather my eyes) and I decided to finish it and publish it (as well as another version of the panorama which I will show shortly) because it, although it was recorded only a short time later, but has its own character.

A wild herb that isn’t really very popular in the garden,

as it tends to take over everything.

But I, and many insects, do like the enchanting flowers

of ground elder, which is also known as a medicinal herb.

For all those who were a bit irritated by yesterday's photo, I'm going back to my classic motifs from nature today.

This photo was also taken in Lohmen in Saxon Switzerland. It was my first attempt to photograph a sunset here. As you can see, I was't so successful with that due to the dense cloud cover. Nevertheless, I like the result very much.

In order to get this perspective, I had to hold the camera high above my head when taking the picture. Luckily I can open the monitor on my Sony. So I could at least see a bit of what I was actually photographing.

#SmileOnSaturday / #HatsAndCo

After so many bright colors that I have shown here in the last few days, I can allow myself to add a somewhat gloomy picture (from February this year) without the whole mood changing. It doesn't tip over for me anyway because, on the one hand, it's my favorite place on the small Winterberg in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which I'm fascinated by in all weathers, and on the other hand, I'm just about to pack my suitcase. Because tomorrow I'm going on a photo tour east for two weeks.

As the title suggests, this photo was taken in a 30 minute break between two rain showers. They made sure that there wasn't much (or nothing) of the sunrise that I actually came up here to see. At the same time, however, an extraordinary atmosphere was created that makes this picture one of my favorites from here.

And since I've photographed this tree about fifteen times now, that's saying something.

We are again near Kanchanaburi in Thailand. Actually, we are standing on the banks of the Mae Klong River.

Actually, I was just on the way back to my hotel that evening. But when I noticed what a magnificent color the sky had taken on after the sunset, I had to stop and somehow integrate it into a composition. This is the result.

A little fun fact on the side. The river, which is called Mae Klong here, changes its name from the city of Kanchanaburi (about 10 km from here). And this is the reason why:

After the film "The Bridge on the River Kwai" was released in 1957 and was so successful, this area became a tourist attraction. Of course it didn't fit that the famous bridge on the River Kwai was actually the bridge on the Mae Klong. And so in the 1960s it was decided to rename the upper reaches of the river into Kwai.

It's impressive that a film can even have an impact on geography.

So if a vision doesn't match reality, but the vision is strong enough, then reality simply as to be adjusted. A phenomenon and behavior pattern that we can still observe regularly today, often among politicians.

Spring already, but it's still snowing and he's hungry too.

BINGO !

Actually, I was already more than satisfied with my photo shooting of the beautiful mountain lake subject, when suddenly a car approached from behind, an old man jumped out, already in full anglers' gear, the fishing rod ready for action and went added himself to my image. BINGO!

I photographed this mallard duck from a bridge. Actually not a good angle photographically, but the light breaks wonderfully in the plumage.

(Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Irix 11 mm)

I actually wanted to capture the peak of the Perseid shower - this night was particularly suitable because the moon set well before midnight.

Unfortunately, the Perseids did not fall as numerously as I had hoped, but surprisingly, the northern lights were visible, which was not really expected so far south. For a short time, the streaks were even visible to the naked eye. I was also able to capture the Milky Way on my favorite tree and one of my many photos even included a small shooting star. (Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, Irix 11 mm)

I've just returned from another walk in the woods on the outskirts of Sebnitz.

Since the lighting wasn't ideal, I focused more on the little things right in front of me or at my feet.

On the former, I noticed a larch tree whose branches were partially covered in thick moss. And on one of those branches, I found a whole group of sentinels with whom I hadn't expected to be on equal footing at this point. So, in that sense, I already had my first surprise of the day.

Actually, it's already the second, because this morning a dear former colleague called me, someone I hadn't been in contact with for quite some time.

I hope my wish works as well for you as it did for me.

During frosty times some of the plain objects of life would be much more interesting.

made by mobile phone and PC / Gimp

While I waited, that the heating was repaired, I downloaded the original source image on my mobile phone and began to manipulate it with painting and filters. When the heating was repaired, I had a number of different alternatives of the original image. Actually, it was not much left from the original image. I loaded the images on my PC and took 8 variations plus the original image. With this 9 pictures I made a collage, after these I used a filter names "tunnel" from the GMIC program and last I painted a lamp into it, so that we have some light. This created my "The empty art gallery".

So entstand

Yesterday morning there was beautiful hoarfrost.

I actually prefer hoarfrost to snow that covers everything.

Have a lovely first Advent !

The Whooper Swans normally breeding high up in the north, Finland and Siberia, but some couples are breeding here since some years.

Last weekend I had the spontaneous inspiration to go to Meissen to photograph the sunset at the famous and impressive Albrechts castle.

That's what I finally did, but while I was looking for a suitable spot, this hot-air balloon took off in the immediate vicinity of the castle.

Of course I didn't have time to think of any special composition (people up there don't wait for me to get going). Instead, I just threw my backpack off me (literally, of course), got out the camera and started shooting.

The result isn't really a banger (like the pictures I was actually here for, which you can judge for yourself shortly), but I'm quite satisfied with it. Such a capture is rare enough.

EN: When the wind comes from the south in Switzerland, the air is often particularly pure and the Alps seem closer than they really are. Today was again such a day and there are a few places in Switzerland where the perceived proximity to the mountains is particularly well staged. One of these places is in Auslikon, between Pfäffikon ZH and Wetzikon. Normally only suburban trains run here on their way to Wetzikon, but a few times a week a gravel train runs from Hüntwangen to Hinwil and back. The spot in Auslikon is actually a very late summer spot, so the locomotive also has a lot of light on the front. I decided to go to the spot a little earlier today and try to get the mountain panorama in the background.

In the centre is the Glärnisch, about 2915 metres above sea level, which forms the central element of the Glarus Alps and blocks the view of the main Alpine ridge.

On this day Re 620 035 "Muttenz" had the honour to pull the empty gravel train 67578 back to Hüntwangen. It's a pity the driver can't see the magnificent panorama!

*********

What would a "final tour" through series from the last few months be without a photo of what is probably the coolest sunset of the year for me, the one from the Carloa rocks in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

When you witness a very special moment as a photographer, you want to capture it from as many angles as possible. This has the big disadvantage that in these moments you are pretty busy trying to get the various possible compositions into the camera before the moment is over again. And the one where you actually just want to freeze in awe.

In some cases we're talking about a time window of two or three minutes, sometimes you're lucky and it's 20-30. The only problem is that you don't know that beforehand.

On the other hand, in the end you will have so many impressions in your head, in your heart and of course in your archive that you can return to this special moment again and again.

Nevertheless, when I take photos, I try to find enough time not to take photos and just be there.

This photo is exclusively dedicated to the famous weather pine from mount Lilienstein in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and its ability to survive in such harsh conditions.

In keeping with this view, I thought of a quote from Mark Twain that has been with me for a long time and which I have wanted to combine with a photo for just as long. I think it could fit here.

It reads: "The two most important days in your life are the day you are born and the day you find out why."

Why does this suit this tree for me? I think it has found it's purpose, which the poet describes with the second day.

It shows the world that things that are actually impossible are also possible. Like, for example, growing and thriving on this rock, all the while exposed to wind and weather without any protection.

If you were to tell these general conditions to someone who has never seen anything like this, the likely reaction would be that no tree can grow here.

And yet here it is, on top of the mount Lilienstein. And this has been the case for many years now. Maybe You remember this extraordinary pine when someone is telling you "this is impossible!".

A true Cologne classic: the cathedral and the Hohenzollern Bridge illuminated at night. I was out with a photographer friend who recently moved to Cologne from abroad. While taking photos together, I realized once again how quickly we pass by such world heritage sites in everyday life without paying any attention to them. It's only when you stroll through the city with someone new who is seeing it all for the first time that you realize what a treasure you actually have right on your doorstep.

----------------------------------------

Kölner Wahrzeichen – Staunen, jedes Mal aufs Neue

I had long wanted to photograph a freight train on the large dam over Lake Skadar near Vranjina. On the morning of June 23, 2021, I had actually planned to drive towards Bar, but at the Sutomore station, a freight train disappeared in the right direction. I quickly turned around, paid the toll for the tunnel again, and tried to follow the train. Near Virpazar, I was neck and neck with the train, but the road traffic was on my side, so I quickly parked the car at the bottom of the steps to the cemetery in Vranjina and hurried up them. As I tried to conquer the last few steps, my legs gave out, and I was already out of breath in the warm temperatures.

But the picture worked! 461-037 pulled onto the dam less than a minute after I arrived at my vantage point. Gasping for air and with trembling legs, the shutter clicked. And everything went well with the road traffic too; the large truck was easily camouflaged behind the tree.

The descent back to the car had to wait a while; I first had to replenish my oxygen before heading back down to the car, extremely satisfied.

Since more spring-like temperatures are coming (hopefully) soon (even if we had snow last night), it's time to post my last photo from my winter morning at the fairytale Moritzburg Castle.

This was the first photo taken that morning. And as you can see, there isn't much to see of the upcoming sunrise yet.

A faint light stripe can only be seen to the right of the castle. Otherwise it was basically still night.

At that point I had no idea that the fireworks would actually take place in a completely different place in the sky. And luckily I was no longer in that position (but in exactly the right one) at that time. Maybe You remember.

I left this one shortly after this picture because I wanted to have a little more free space and therefore more reflection in my composition.

All you can say is that I was really lucky again.

When I think about it, it's fascinating how many lucky circumstances are involved sometimes in the creation of my pictures.

It is not for nothing that the Alpe di Siusi is so well known. A feast for the eyes wherever you look. You can always use a barn or a hut as a foreground. It becomes more of a problem if you want to take a photo without one.

This photo, taken from a viewing point at the Bastei rocks in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains, which dates from November of last year, is one of my favorite pictures from the entire last year.

To me, this scene with the jagged rocks surrounded by a turbulent sea of mist seems as if we had been transported not only to another time but even to another planet.

I've been thinking for a long time about what kind of text I could write about this, which is why I'm only posting it now. Now I have come to the conclusion that the significance of the picture is completely sufficient and I have actually already written far too much.

I only came across this photo by pure chance.

I was actually at an elephant sanctuary in Laos to have lunch with my group and, of course, see the elephants.

After lunch, I was sent to a small pavilion, somewhat off to the side, for a smoke. And guess what was in front of the pavilion? That's right. A large, flowering hibiscus bush with three orange tip butterflies busily exploring the blossoms.

Of course, I quickly grabbed my camera and let my "colleagues" go to see the elephants without me.

Later, I followed them and still had enough time for a few photos.

So, what's the message behind this Monday floral greeting?

Well, sometimes it's important to deviate from our plans and follow our gut feeling.

I love rainbows and their colors. They are actually not in the sky as a real band, but only an atmospheric-optical phenomenon. We see the refraction of light from raindrops, but it has a strong mythological meaning all over the world.

These days it is the symbol of hope in the Corona period. I wish you a nice Easter Saturday!

"Dancer in the wind" by the artist Gisela Meyer-Hahn on the lake in Barmstedt is a construction, six meter long and three meter high. When the wind hits the colorful wing surfaces, they begin to turn. "The dancer in the wind reminds us of our own spiral of life, of the shape of our DNA," says Meyer-Hahn, adding: "The eye can follow the movement that detaches itself from the object and gives us mobility and strength."

thx a lot for your comments.

Wasseramseln wenden verschiedene Strategien beim Nahrungserwerb an. Quelle: Wikipedia

Actually, there are no dippers in northern Germany, but some from Scandinavia or the Baltic States spend the winter here at our place in northern Germany. A few years ago, there were some in several places every winter, but that has become less and less often. It's certainly a consequence of climate change that they no longer migrate so far. The last time I saw one here was in 2020.

This songbird, which is about the size of a starling and has a rounded appearance, is tightly bound to life along fast-flowing, clear waters. There, it feeds primarily on aquatic insects, which it catches mainly by diving. Dippers use various strategies to obtain food. The simplest form is to pick up prey from the ground, the water surface or leaves; occasionally, stones are turned over or leaves are turned over. When diving, dippers dip their heads into the water from a standing or floating position and search the substrate near the surface for prey. The most common and specialised method of obtaining food is diving. Underwater, dippers turn over small stones and loosen stuck insect larvae from the substrate by rotating their heads.

Geschüttelt. Nicht gerührt.

Actually one should translate the catchphrase in German like this: Erschüttert, nicht gerührt ... which makes a completely different sense ;-)

I found the following a little interesting:

No other drink in book and film history is as famous as Bond's Vodka Martini. The agent licensed to kill has a very precise idea of how to mix this cocktail. The saying "Shaken, not stirred" is one of the most famous movie catchphrases of all time. Bond reaches for the glass on various occasions and in changing company. He drinks his vodka martini ice-cold, but without ice. So ice is put in the shaker, the vodka martini is shaken and finally the ice is filtered off. The name of the drink also causes further confusion: Martini is a very well-known vermouth brand, but Bond drinks his vodka martini entirely without this wine-containing ingredient. And James Bond wouldn't be James Bond if he didn't have an ace up his sleeve: Biochemists from the University of Western Ontario have found that the shaken variant with wormwood is healthier. In addition to the additional oxygen, it also contains more antioxidants that protect the body from free radicals.

- - - Well then ... cheers ;-)

I think my two virtual living room lights are having fun. And the mood goes with a drink, right?

///

maybe the beginning of a series:

Instead of snow and frost as should be expected at this time of the year, the thermometer has been showing mild temperatures these last days between 10 and 12 degrees centigrade, above zero to be clear, even at night not much lower.

So that I can end this series as soon as possible, I'm adding a photo of the beautiful Blue Wonder in Dresden. And this time in a slightly more cell phone-friendly version.

This was also taken at the beginning of December last year from the terrace of the "Luisenhof" restaurant. Why the operators rightly call themselves "The Balcony of Dresden" is actually obvious when you look at this fantastic view.

Autumn is actually the time of many colors. But there are also areas where coloring starts much earlier.

One of these places is the Königsbrück Heather near Dresden. The photo was taken at the end of August and as you can see, the Erica (yes, that is really the scientific name of the heather, I didn't make it up) is already shining in its typical violet color.

When I looked at the picture I asked myself what I should call it. I was torn between birch heather or heather birch? In the end I finally decided on something more neutral because it doesn't actually matter. In any case, the combination of the bright white birch trunks and the purple-flowering heather looks very chic. And especially against such a dark background, which is provided here by a small spruce forest.

At least I think so.

This image shows some grasses at the german Green Belt at an evening in last Juli. We planned to take images of some butterflies, but finally I only took some macro shots of the nature.

Today is supposed to be about two actually irreconcilable opposites.

There is no light without shadows and without the cold of the night, we would not appreciate the warmth of the day.

We often try to suppress the unpleasant parts of life and only concentrate on the beautiful things. And then we are surprised and sometimes shocked when the “evil twin” suddenly appears in front of us. This shock can even cause us to completely lose sight of the light and have great difficulty finding it again.

What we can do, however, is to always be aware of both sides. When I love, it is an indescribably beautiful and inspiring feeling. And at the same time it makes me more vulnerable than almost anything else in life. Where there is a lot of love, there may also be a lot of pain (everyone, who has children knows what I am talking about). Should we therefore stop loving? Of course not. We just have to make sure we always have enough love for ourselves. Then we are able to deal with the pain (even if that doesn't make it any more pleasant).

I could write a book with the thoughts that fill me on this topic. For today, however, I have to leave it with this short form.

Photographically, today I'm going to turn to light first. And few of my recent photos can convey this as well as this beautiful sunny morning on the Bastei rocks in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.

The monastery of Kyra Panagia Tsambika, which is no longer inhabited and actually only consists of a monastery church, is located on the top of the rocky mountain of Tsambika.

From the coastal road near Kolymbia, a signposted road with a rather poor asphalt surface leads in serpentines to the lower summit, from where you have to walk the 300 steps to the monastery.

The small church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Panagia) and is still a place of pilgrimage for young women wishing to have children, who carry one of the sacks of sand provided with them for the last section of the ascent to reinforce their wish.

Once at the top, the effort is rewarded with an impressive view over the island landscape

We're still on Phousi Hill in Luang Prabang, Laos, and less than 30 minutes have passed between the photo with the rainbow (see my post yesterday) and this one. And yet, everything is different now.

We're now looking in the opposite direction, where the sunset should have been visible later (which, unfortunately, wasn't due to the thick clouds).

But there was this one gap in the clouds. And as the setting sun reached this area, a magical and dramatic atmosphere spread over the Mekong landscape.

And while last night's photo looked more like the Shire, bright, colorful, and full of lightness, we're now looking directly into Mordor. With the luminous eye of Sauron in the sky, holding our gaze captive.

It just goes to show how close light and darkness are.

Those were truly extraordinary 15 minutes. I could easily forgive myself for not getting a good sunset photo.
