This boat in Kuala Sala have been abandoned probably as a reminder of the Tsunami.

At Crewe our RTC test trains were often stabled for a short period awaiting a locomotive change or traincrew arrival. This gave an opportunity to photograph the busy locomotive scene at Crewe typified in May 1985 at the Diesel depot, including five Class 25 locomotives headed by a slightly crumpled 25213. Built as D7563 at Derby in 1965 and renumbered 25213 in 1973 it was withdrawn in 1987 and cut up at Vic Berry scrapyard in Leicester in 1990.

Old Oak Common Open Day 111 Saturday 02nd September 2017

British Rail Class 90 25kV electric locomotive 90009 at Norwich Station at the end of the Great Eastern Main Line in Norwich (UK).

90009 has previously been named 'Royal Show', 'The Economist' and most recently 'Diamond Jubilee' along with a full size Union Flag on the side but these have all been removed.

90009 was built at British Rail Crewe Works and entered service on September 7th 1988.

Note Norwich Cathedral in the background.

British Rail Class 220 'Voyager' 4 car Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) 2200XX working the 1V42 06:10 (10:29 12L) Cross Country Trains Derby- Plymouth service train westbound at Totnes Station on the South Devon Main Line in Devon (UK) on June 25th 2018.

Note the lack of any obvious numbers to quickly identify this Class 220 unit for enthusiasts and railwaymen alike. Very irritating.

Also note the 'Dellner Coupling' at the front of the train which is a version of the Scharfenberg coupler that connects pneumatics and electronics at the same point of contact.

The energy absorption technology in a Dellner Coupling is designed to allow an accidental collision up to 9 mph with no structural damage and up to 22 mph with some carriage deformation, however up to this speed the train should remain upright and on the track.

Thank you to David for taking this photograph on a very brief visit to the NNR and is posted here with kind permission.

The humble 142 unit has been screeching and squealing its way around the North West for over 30 years but it's days are coming to an end.

Love them or hate them they have done the job asked of them and that was to keep costs on Northern & Western rural and urban lines down, to allow them the remain viable.

Based on the Class 141 (which was in turn based on the Leyland National Bus!) they would never win any prizes in a beauty contest.

A much earlier time is shown with 142010 leaving Blackpool North with a Blackpool-Liverpool service on a dark and damp 30th August 1992.

Note the now removed signals and signal box swept away for electrification work (2017/18) and also the Electric Units (Classes 305/308 i believe) from an older age in the Carriage sidings in the background.

Class 501 EMU leaving Broad Street on a Richmond service. Closure of Broad Street was agreed 2 months after this picture was taken and the last platform closed in June 1986. The class 501s were withdrawn less than a month after this picture was taken to be replaced by Southern 2-EPBs on the North London line services and class 313s on the Euston-Watford services.

Thin end of a long wedge, I preferred the days of rail blue, though I quite like these buffers, compared to the round ones originally fitted!

Here are photos of our fourth maker art class for lower school children at the Lycée Français in Sausalito. Students are now making a Chinese New Year Wonderbox, creating a small diorama with an animal from the Chinese Zodiac in a decorated cardboard box -- combining art and technology to bring their work to life.

In this class, children started working on their animal characters, using wood figures we made earlier with a laser cutter. They explored different ways to make their animals move, using hobby motors connected to a AA batteries with alligator clips.

Students loved this activity, and all succeeded in making their motors work and animate their art, as this video shows. This hands-on, project-based activity seems effective for teaching how electricity and motors work, in a playful way that makes science more fun. The children are responding well to this approach: they learn by doing and seem engaged by the freedom to create their own interactive art.

Next week, they will add LEDs for the eyes, decorate their animals and install them in their boxes. You can follow our progress in our Maker Art photo album, where we post weekly updates: www.flickr.com/photos/fabola/albums/72157663074065150

Many thanks to my associate Cynthia Gilbert, who provides invaluable help in the classroom on a volunteer basis — as well as school parent Jules Maeght, Josephine’s dad, who kindly offered to give us a hand today. We’re very lucky to have so many generous collaborators on this project. Merci!
