We are in Ingeniero Jacobacci, a city in the Veinticinco de Mayo Department of the Río Negro Province of Argentina. This is in Patagonia. More precisely, we are inside the locomotive depot of the narrow gauge railway called “La Trochita”.
The Baldwin #3 is leaving the depot for a day of work on the main line, engulfing the roof with lots of smoke. The orange light comes from the rising sun.

The day had started under the cover of an overcast layer of clouds, so we planned to shoot CN's six-day-a-week Garneau-Parent manifest at this spot in Lac-Masketsi, QC, which is looking almost due south. As train time got closer, the clouds began to open up more and more, and the possibility of sunfucking became apparent. However, the strong haze toned it down a little, and I think it came out alright. Consist : CN 2967, CN 3829.
This is the last spot of the afternoon already: freight train traffic was scarce. A northbound intermodal train runs through the town of Braubach. "through" has to be taken literally here: it passes right in front of the houses. Considering this is one of the busiest freight lines in Germany, you can understand why inhabitants of the villages are complaining about noise. Let's hope authorities come up with creative solutions that won't consist of covering the whole railway line with meters-high noise barriers.

Ne manquez pas la suite : destination le viaduc du Garabit !
Next up was a cargo train to and from Horna Stubna. We chose the town of Turcek to make the photo's. The first train was so and so: flat cars, hidden behind a bush... it was more like a bonus though, because the train from Horna Stubna was right on: nicely in the curve, beautiful background, and a nice train consist.

Judging the satellite images, the section between Hay Saada and Ain Taoujdate used to curve a lot, until it was replaced by a new line with a viaduct. Very likely combined with a speed increase and electrification. This viaduct near Ait Bouil is also nice to look at, and we spent some time making pictures of the rather dense passenger traffic.

What makes a photo location a good one? Among my criteria are a nice landscape as back- or foreground, no clutter like communication masts or fences, and "peace and quiet". You don't see the last criterium on the photo, but it makes the waiting nice. Add a little sunshine and some interesting trains, and I may be tempted to stick around for a while... even though I prefer to see as large a number of places as possible on a photoday.
After the unsuccesfull tries around Bezpravi, I couldn't resist the temptation to stick around for a while at Ceska Trebova. It was a quiet place to sit, and train traffic was very busy.

The High Tatra mountains are hiding behind… equally High clouds. Tough luck, but train traffic was overcompensating. Below a selection of what I saw. Regiojet was expected, PKP Cargo wasn’t. This line was definitely rocking it, making the far trip here all the more worthwhile.

I just went through my collection and came across this shot from 2020.
The machines being restored are truly amazing work. I know from my own engagement how much effort is needed to keep the old machines running.

(EN) The year 2015 meant for 2044 001, after a long time-out, the long-awaited return to Croatia's railway tracks. After being in service in the north-east of the country for a few months, mainly on the so-called "Podravina mainline" between Koprivnica and Osijek, in the autumn the locomotive returned to its usual routes around Varazdin and has since then been mainly used on regional services on the main route to Zagreb. In the afternoon of 16/11/2015 it was hauling the regional train 3015 from Varazdin to Zagreb and was captured immediately before sunset at the entrance to the station of Zabok.

After an overnight trip from Mérida, YUC, a Ferrocarril del Istmo de Tehuantepec (FIT) has just tied down its train by the old station in Campeche, CAM. The trip from Mérida is mostly southbound geographically, but this train is called a northbound, even though it will mostly be running south and west along the old línea FA on its way to Coatzacoalcos, VER. It makes more sense if you think of this line as an extension of Mexico's main north-south line. Consist : BOTX 3904, BOTX 1883.

It was only a few minutes, which were given "Chnurrli" - on the left - to shine and rise with the two mighty other steamers.
And soon Andreas was off with "Chnurrli" to put at rest for the night.
A visit to Morocco without seeing a Prima locomotive wouldn't be complete .One of the first trains we saw, was this one headed by one of these beautiful locomotives. We were around Settat and had the timetable of the passenger trains, so decided to go for the certain picture before heading to the quieter line that has the freight traffic. Little did we know that freight train traffic would be rather intense.

After an overnight trip from Mexico City, a Ferrosur manifest train is crawling into Veracruz yard behind a pair of AC44's of different lineage. The Port of Veracruz is Mexico's largest port on the Atlantic and is the origin or destination point of most of the traffic on the 420-kilometer línea S. On this hazy February morning, we found the yard bustling with activity, with several trains waiting to go in and three switch jobs moving around the yard.
19-07-2024 - The Modder River bridge near Perdeberg is one of the best spots on the otherwise not so scenic Kimberley – Bloemfontein line (Free State, South Africa). The late afternoon light makes the position even more beautiful, as the glint reflects on the side of the train.

The first success in Beervelde encouraged me to continue the chase. In Griendtsveen I expected quite some color and a high chance to see a freight train. The Betuwe route was closed due to works on the German side and train were rerouted over Eindhoven. And yes, once set up I didn't have to wait long for a freight train. We see Rurtalbahn Cargo 193 793 with a train from Maasvlakte to Blerick. Why do they so often forget to place a container on the first wagon?
