We didn't plan for shots in this direction, but with a southbound train approaching I gave it a try. Even though I was not satisfied with the result on the camera scren, I decided to keep this one, keeping in mind the advice of a good friend to always judge your photos on the computer screen. After some post-processing I had to change my mind and think of this photo as one of the better ones I made at Hochfelden that day.

The day had started under the cover of an overcast layer of clouds, so we planned to shoot CN's six-day-a-week Garneau-Parent manifest at this spot in Lac-Masketsi, QC, which is looking almost due south. As train time got closer, the clouds began to open up more and more, and the possibility of sunfucking became apparent. However, the strong haze toned it down a little, and I think it came out alright. Consist : CN 2967, CN 3829.
“...one church memorably teaches that if all the trains were to be still, together, for one moment, if there were no rails percussing the iron road, all human life would wink instantly out.... it is the rails that dream us. We do not dream the rails.”
―(China Miéville: Railsea)―
The rails - the train tracks - that run through the old industrial downtown section of Medford, Oregon, like the arteries carrying blood throughout the body.
A little time spent along the tracks at De Pinte resulted in this photo of a grain train hauled by a BB36000 locomotive. I didn't know this would be my last photo of this kind of engine in Belgium, but until now they haven't reappeared on Belgian tracks. Who knows what the future will bring... I definitely appreciated seeing these cousins of the SNCB/CFL 13/3000 series.

The railroad is vital to Huancavelica because the region is really enclosed in the heart of mountains, but this old car is not any more used for many years.

After a good day of shooting trains in the snow in the beautiful Voeren region, I didn't feel like going home yet.
I went to a location I had gone to before, without snow though. I like the spot because it has this little bridge, a fence, which make it a bit more interesting for night photography.
The 3 trains I was able to shoot weren't the nicest, unfortunately, full of graffiti. Next time I'll have to book a hotel room and stay a bit longer, because honestly, on the way back I could barely stay awake.
Lineas 186 497 with train 44537 towards Aachen. Schoppem, January 19, 2024.
I never saw Re620 062 before - which makes also a nice number play.
So a sonny day, and a total of 10 axles of power drawing a heavy train through Olten. Do I need anything more?
The first success in Beervelde encouraged me to continue the chase. In Griendtsveen I expected quite some color and a high chance to see a freight train. The Betuwe route was closed due to works on the German side and train were rerouted over Eindhoven. And yes, once set up I didn't have to wait long for a freight train. We see Rurtalbahn Cargo 193 793 with a train from Maasvlakte to Blerick. Why do they so often forget to place a container on the first wagon?

I just went through my collection and came across this shot from 2020.
The machines being restored are truly amazing work. I know from my own engagement how much effort is needed to keep the old machines running.
I continued following the line from Usti nad Labem Strekov to Lysa nad Labem. It was a nice road to follow, but photo opportunities were scarce. In Libochovany I found a spot to park the car though, and the view turned out to be quite interesting. The town on the top left of the photo is Dubice, and is located on the other side of the river.
There was nice sunlight for this passenger train; I wasn't as lucky for the freight train.

Back to our regular programming... CN 3301, an AC44C6M fresh out of Wabtec's Fort Worth shops, powers daily Moncton-Toronto freight 305 through Drummondville, QC.
I was out of inspiration as to where to photograph next. CFL1800 and Peter Gootzen kindly let me follow them to the station of Krefeld Linn. Standing on the platform we awaited a few trains - from the expected trains, one would be hauled by a recently repainted Ludmilla engine!
The building on the left of the frame is an old signalling cabin, I think. It seems to be out of service for a while now.
These rebuilt class 216 locomotives are rare: only 6 of them exist. Here NIAG number 8, ex-216 055, hauls a train through Krefeld-Linn.

The weather has been pretty miserable since mid-October, and I haven't had the motivation to go out much (we're currently locked down anyway). Today, radio chatter indicated that CN 120, VIA 24 and SLR 393 would all be around Montbec at the same time, so I headed out. I was rewarded with this great consist on SLR 393 of four GP40's and two RM-1 road slugs. Consist : SLR 3803, SLR 803, SLR 3004, SLR 805, SLR 3805, QGRY 3105.
