Alle porte del piccolo abitato di Classe, a circa 8 km a sud di Ravenna, si erge uno degli otto monumenti che compongono il sito Unesco della città: è la grandiosa e solenne la BASILICA DI SANT’APOLLINARE IN CLASSE con il suo caratteristico campanile cilindrico.

Nata per accogliere le spoglie di Apollinare, Santo patrono della città, la basilica fu edificata su una precedente area cimiteriale in uso tra la fine del II e l’inizio III secolo d.C. dove sembra avesse trovato sepoltura lo stesso protovescovo.

A finanziarla fu Giuliano Argentario su ordine del vescovo Ursicino (533 – 536 d.C.) ma fu consacrata solo qualche anno dopo (549 d.C.), sotto l’arcivescovato di Massimiano.

Imponente e maestosa, con una facciata alta 30 metri e lunga quasi il doppio, è stata definita il più grande esempio di basilica paleocristiana oggi conosciuta.

Il museo Classis Ravenna è uno dei più importanti musei archeologici d’Italia, nonché un vero e proprio viaggio nella storia di Ravenna.

Insieme alla vicina Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe e all’area archeologica dell’Antico Porto, costituisce il terzo tassello del Parco Archeologico di Classe.

Posto a poche centinaia di metri dalla Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe, il museo si sviluppa su un’area espositiva di ben 2.800 metri quadrati, frutto di un laborioso progetto di archeologia industriale che ha interessato i ruderi di un vecchio zuccherificio.

Ad accogliere i visitatori è una rutilante scala decorata con un’onda di mosaico lunga ben 33 metri, realizzata dal Laboratorio di Restauro del Mosaico Antico della Fondazione RavennAntica: un’opera che sorprende e trascina verso l’ingresso del museo, e che sta a sottolineare come Ravenna e il mare siano un’unica cosa, da sempre.

We just got back from a fantastic digiscoping trip to Louisiana - where I met some long-time and a few new Flickr friends, for some amazing bird activity, and then on to Texas for a full week of photos and video of some of the "eye candy" of the bird world.

I shot over 300 videos and 15,000 photos, and I have a lot of work ahead of me. This is a very short clip from the last light of the last night there. I had seen a few Inca Doves on previous visits, but had noted that I hadn't seen any on this trip. Just as the last light was fading I saw a dove land in a nearby tree, but darker and smaller than the MANY White-winged doves there. When I put the scope on it I was thrilled to see that it was a red-eyed Inca Dove. I decided to post a short clip instead of just a photo, as the wind blowing in the trees behind the bird, and the calling of the White-winged Dove in the background perfectly captured the mood of that special moment.

Her food dish was right beside her,but she's spoiled rotten.

It was a day early in 2012 that my obsession with abandoned buildings began, I felt this huge unity with these places, they spoke to my soul and being inside them was the greatest feeling ever. Consumed by the beauty I found in their decay and history, for 5 years I have been photographing these places.

I have travelled all around Europe and last year the world, in 2014 I produced my first book Soviet Ghosts and this year my second one Fukushima will come out in the shops in April. But for these 5 years, what I have really been collecting these photos for is something truly special, an indulgent celebration of the photos I have created for my series Orphans of Time.

I will be producing a very special limited edition book of 2000 copies, all will be signed and numbered, they will look like old Victorian photo albums, each will have a black cover, embossing, and gold debossed lettering, the edges of the paper will be gold leaf and a metal clasp will hold the book shut. Inside will be hundreds of photos taken over the last 5 years. The book itself will look like a remnant from the past, perhaps more at home on the old dusty bookshelf of one of the abandoned houses that I roam.
