For those who might be interested, I recently uploaded to my online book Photographic Psychology: Image and Psyche an article which suggests that all patterns in a photograph fall into two basic categories: geometric and organic. Some people say that abstract patterns are a third type, but I think they’re just a variation of the other two. I also explore the possible psychological meanings that we perceive in geometric and organic patterns. When we combine these two types in a photograph, we can comment on the relationship between human civilization and nature. For example, in this photo, I see humans attempting to contain, and walk around, the stark and rugged forces of nature.

nrhp # 03000098- In 1945, Tulsa had 26 movie theaters. Of those, only one remains standing today: the Circle Theater. Built in 1928 on the old 1926-32 alignment of Route 66 through Tulsa, the Circle was part of the central shopping district in Tulsa’s earliest suburban shopping center, Whittier Square. Like almost all historic single-screen movie palaces, the Circle struggled to remain viable in the age of the multiplex. By the mid-1990s it was shuttered and threatened with demolition. Thanks to the tireless work of the Circle Cinema Foundation, today the Circle is going stronger than ever, and in July 2013 celebrated its 85th anniversary grand reopening.
The theater, which was included in the National Register of Historic Places in 2003, is located in a two-story brick commercial-style building, quite distinct from the opulence that characterized most theaters of the era. Its suburban location, the fact that it was not designed by a professional architect, and the mixed use character of the building which housed apartments above the theater explain its understated nature. Because the theater was only one part of the multi-use building, the structure was also known as the Chilton Building (named for the original owner), and “Chilton” flanked by the numbers 19 and 28 can still be seen inscribed into the front of the building near the roofline. A beautifully restored neon sign and neon-lit marquee grace the façade, which was recently taken back to its appearance circa 1952, thanks in part to a grant through the National Park Service’s Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program in 2012. The setback of the building is quite shallow, a practice common to theaters that was designed to draw people in from the sidewalk. What was originally a storefront to the north of the theater houses the Circle Cinema Foundation’s offices; another storefront to the south of the ticket window was incorporated into the theater’s lobby sometime after 1957.
When the Circle Cinema Foundation purchased the original theater, it also purchased two adjacent storefronts to the south of the theater. Those renovated spaces now adjoin the original lobby space and house a gathering/reception area, a display of movie posters, and an art gallery for local artists to exhibit their works. In 2013, the main auditorium of the original theater was renovated, and today the Circle Cinema boasts four screens of various sizes and seating capacities. The Circle is a boon not only for lovers of Route 66 and historic theaters, but for film aficionados as well. The Circle provides an innovative mix of programming focusing on art-house and international films, and also showcases special screenings of classic and contemporary films that often feature guest appearances from stars, directors, or other personalities associated with the various productions. Thanks in large part to the efforts of the Circle Cinema Foundation, the theater plays a crucial role in the ongoing transformation of the neighborhood from a declining condition back to its suburban heyday as a walkable district for entertainment, shopping, and dining.

Requested in 1805 by Napoleon I for what was formerly the King’s Chamber, the Throne Room in the Château de Fontainebleau is the only such suite in France still in its original state. Together with his crown, his two ensigns and his daïs, the throne was installed in the alcove in which the king’s bed formerly stood. Originally made for the Château de Saint Cloud in 1804 by Jacob-Desmalter, based on designs by the architects Percier and Fontaine, it was installed at Fontainebleau in 1808. The seat itself had been created for the throne at the Tuileries Palace. www.musee-chateau-fontainebleau.fr/Napoleon-s-Throne?lang=en
Napoleon added the standards with his initial and the Imperial eagle. The decoration around the throne was originally designed in 1804 by Jacob-Desmalter for the Palace of Saint-Cloud, and the throne itself came from the Tuileries Palace.
The chimney was originally decorated with a portrait of Louis XIII painted by Philippe de Champaigne, which was burned in 1793 during the French Revolution. Napoleon replaced it with a portrait of himself, by Robert Lefèvre. In 1834, King Louis-Philippe took down Napoleon's picture and replaced with another of Louis XIII, from a painter of the school of Champaigne

She was pleased to pose for a portrait, once I promised to make sure she got a copy.
See if you can spot yours! It has only taken over a year to put the top together... Perhaps another year will see it finished?
And there are those irritating reflections again! Fascinated though as I was with those prehistoric skeletons, dating back to the 3rd and 4th century BC, photographing them was becoming rather difficult thanks to the reflections. This was the worst, and the last straw- I managed to work my way around this and get reflection-free photos of the graves after this- see subsequent pictures. We are in the Church of Kish in Azerbaijan. Detailed notes about the Church of Kish appeared in previous captions earlier in this album. (Sheki, Azerbaijan, Sept. 2017)

So, for those that don't know, we're having a baby! Pretty exciting but scary as crap. We have settled on the name Chloe but it is my job to come up with a middle name. I'm cluless. I can't come up with anything at all. To think that I am in charge of someone's name that they will have for their entire life. Any suggestions?

Something Old – Something New
I like symmetry in life. I like those moments when things seems to come full circle. Thanks to my friend Ray Pomeroy hanging in there and checking out my photos and reading along, and because he’s plugged into the Laurel scene, tonight’s is one of those full circle moments.
There have been a fair number of post throughout the project about Laurel’s capacity to close, tear down, rebuild, pave over, and reinvent. Sometimes we preserve things, and other times it seems as If there is no plan at all. And for frequent readers & viewers… the Foodie Gods know that there hasn’t been a shortage of Diner photos throughout the project.
And so…Some followers might remember this post from Day 15 on April 18th of last year:
“Laurel is a funny town. Similar to New York in the sense that places and institutions are always coming and going. Recently I’ve been dismayed to learn that in the last few weeks, Carol’s Western Wear, The Silver Diner, and The Laurel Theatre on Main Street have either gone out of business or are slated for demolition. But here’s the good news my friends… when Laurel tears down a library, they turn right around and build a better one to hold stories yet to be written.“
Here we are almost a year later with 25 photos left to be found, and still a little bit of the story yet to tell. Indeed…. We did build an open a new and better Library this past year. Carol’s is still looking for a new tenant, as is Belmont TV. Radio Shack became a Firehouse Pizza and Subs. But this… this news right here… this is poetic. Laurel’s getting its own Double T Diner, located where the Silver Diner I was lamenting on April 18th used to be. When Laurel closes a diner, the good people of our town demand a new one, with better burgers and richer, thicker, chocolatier shakes, and late night neon, and meals with friends and family yet to be consumed.
This news from South Laurel Views:
Feb 14, 2017:
The recently vacated location of the former Silver Diner in Laurel, will be filled by a new Double T Diner. The opening date is still pending. This news was inferred from a routine agenda published by the Prince George's County Liquor Board for a public hearing on March 28 to consider Double T Diner's new liquor license application as follows:
"Walter Andino, Member/Manager, for a new Class B, Beer, Wine and Liquor
License for the use of Cuscatlecos, LLC, t/a Laurel Double-T Diner, 14550 Baltimore Avenue, Laurel, 20707." (map)
The public Liquor Board hearing will be held at 9200 Basil Court, Room 410, Largo, Maryland 20774, 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, March 28, 2017.

On display in the 'Land of Liberty Peace and Plenty' at Heronsgate near Chorleywood, Hertfordshire (go there, super pub) is this rather out-of-date price list. Dated 1966, it is of course priced in shillings and pence. For those who've forgotten (or never knew) a shilling is equal to 5p. One new penny is equal to 2.4 old pence. Wish pubs nowadays had a selection of different sorts of beer like that in bottles. Though not clear, the 'National Beers' were also in bottles. That was the only place lager appeared on the price list. There wasn't much call for it then. Only women and homosexuals drank the wretched stuff!
