No, those are not stone toilets deep in the Aragonese Castle on Italy's Island of Ischia; that where the Poor Clares cloistered nuns placed their dead... left to ooze out to bones over time.

Each day, the nuns would enter the small room to pray, the stench serving a reminder of our ephemeral earthly life.

This is an odd habit (so to speak) that started about 400 years ago. I have to wonder how the sicko that first thought of doing this pitched it to the other nuns... "Now hear me out..."

Fall never ceases to impress me. There are colors and textures that go on and on. I will never get tired of shooting fall.

This was taken in a small Japanese town called Tayama. This tree was near an elementary school. It has some of the most beautiful fall leaves I've ever seen.

I shot a portrait session with Alexi and her friend Logan recently. Man, those eyes get me every time.

Jan is a harpist, who plays Celtic harps in many places, of those, her most rewarding is beside the hospital bed of someone in need of a bit of soothing music.

She plays with our choir at church, her music adding to the beauty of the combined voices and instruments, and with moving solos.

Uriel is Jan's archangel which stands with her as she's playing, watching over those in need. She's written a song of her prayer that she prays as she is playing beside those in need. A prayer asking Uriel to help heal the heart & sooth the soul with angels blessings from above.

Jan is recording an album of her own compositions and those of others, that will be used where and when she cannot go to one in need of this soothing music.So that the album would have at least a photo of Jan, I had the honor of doing a photo session with Jan on a small hill-top at sunset. We were wind-blown a bit, and the wind started playing the strings, almost like an organ's pipes. It was a special time together, full of laughter and fun.

I do believe I caught Jan's bit of Irish fun, and that special twinkle in her smile and eyes.

Those who are familiar with my Flickr stream will know I am a spider lover (along with all creepy crawlies), so for me, this experience was quite sad.

I was out planting some plants we had just picked up, and while digging, I noticed I had squashed a soft white ball like object. I had a closer look and noticed that it was actually a sack containing tiny spiderlings. They were obviously extremely new as they were barely recognisable as spiders (1mm if that) and they were motionless. (I wouldn't have applied enough pressure to kill them)

I continued on planting and then my wife pointed out a rather large spider by my hand. It didn't occur to me at first, but I soon realised it must have been the mother.

I tried to move it along, out of harms way, by giving her a poke in the behind, but she refused to budge. She kept walking around the area where I found the sack.

Most people are probably aware that the female wolf spider is known for carrying her young around on her back, but this motherly instinct was beyond what I thought a spider was capable of. Not even my digging or my two dogs strolling around deterred her. Quite brave but in no way aggressive (to my surprise).

I'm not sure if spiders have emotions, but if it's possible, then she appeared to be showing signs of worry and depression.

One of my more interesting spider encounters, that's for sure. Just a shame that it all began with the loss of her little ones.
