"Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end
We'd sing and dance forever and a day
We'd live the life we'd choose
We'd fight and never lose
Those were the days, oh yes, those were the days"
-Mary Hopkins/"Those Were The Days"
(CHICAGO, Illinois - 19-26 August, 2011) Veterans wounded in current campaigns, (OEF, OIF, OND, Gulf War) and those retirees of previous wars, participated in a three-day United States Olympic Committee (USOC) and World Sports Chicago training camp followed by the subsequent inaugural Olympic style 2011 Valor Games Midwest in Chicago, Illinois. The confidence and empowerment events sponsored by the Veteran's Administration, World Sports Chicago, USA Paralympics and the Support All Veterans Equally (S.A.V.E) organization embraced the capabilities of participants who at first glance, because of percieved disabilities ranging from severe traumatic brain injuries, loss of limbs, wheelchair confinement and other debilitating ailments are thought to be limited, by introducing them to events such as track & field, archery, winter biathlon challenges, rowing and water activity, to name a few, and Warriors who, like themselves, were stricken ill or injured during active duty. Focusing on existing self-determinations and reinforcing the military's esprit de corps. Jeanette Thompson, a wheelchair athlete and paralympian who was introduced to the throwing events at a USOC Paralympic Military Sports Camp in Rhode Island in 2009 and made a dramatic showing at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in Christchurch, New Zealand in January as a member of Team USA and placing first in several field events in 2010. She was also named 2010 Rookie of the Year in wheelchair basketball by the Augusta Bulldogs. Thompson said these events are an opportunity to be oneself without the misconception of limitations. "Since my injury the stigma associated with being (confined) to two-wheels has been fun to disprove," the gregarious retired Army non-commissioned officer explained. "Now (injured veterans) come together and feel the normalcy of being a team with commonalities, not restrictions, and look beyond societal restrictions and move forward to continue to proudly represent our country in other capacities."

It's amazing how much my photography has changed since I've had kids. I never used to like to really photograph people/kids....I found it much easier to photograph a stationary object....they don't scream/yell/poop/cry etc. But since I've had my kids I absolutly love to photograph them.
On that note I also used to love to convert everything into b/w. Maybe I wasn't as comfortable with my photography....maybe I was just moody. Whatever.....this is the first b/w conversion I've done in a while....I think it's ok...but still needs some work. Anyway.....I'll stop blabbering on and on.

11/08/2014. Vintage (1966) Inpact Kits vintage plane collection, this is all 6 of 6:
Bleriot XI, Deperdussin, Martin-Handasyde, Avro Triplane, Avro Biplane and the Bristol-Boxkite.
I have had these for many years now, however each kit was sourced separately one by one. I felt people might be interested in the boxart - which is quite beautiful. The kits are complete - only unassembled, quite a find for kits that are 40+ years old.
Made by Inpact Kits in 1966, although these kits carry advertisements for the movie "Those Magnificent Men and their Flying Machines" only the Boxkite and the Avro Triplane are used in the film.
I don't know why this photograph I took almost 2 years ago didn't speak to me until just now. I pulled out my 1tb harddrive today to look at old pictures from Syria and I found some portraits I absolutely fell in love with. This is pretty close to being one of my favorite portraits i've ever taken.
This exact picture is the definition of what I want out of my photography.
for those who are suffering from flower deprivation this time of year --
with our 80+ degree temps I'm surprised these are still holding up so well!

Those of us who enjoy a good book know how easy it is to get lost in a good story. This photo represents just that. Myself being so captivated by fairytales & mythology, I too can get lost in those stories. So when you read your favorite book, where do you go? Some far off magical place with castles and dragons? Sailing ships with pirates searching for buried treasure? Or do you sit among the stars under the light of the moon, drifting by gazing upon the galaxy.
My mom has one of those heavy iron helper in the kitchen. She had us kids help with grinding the meat mixed with raw onions and lots of fresh parsley to prepare the delicious meat balls she'd fry for us. I recall the red, then green juice running down the grinder on a newspaper which she had placed on the floor to absorb the messy process.
We also used to grind dry bread into crumbs. It came in handy for adding into different ingredients. I still remember the crushed almonds and the minced red hot chili pepper.
Mom is a magician in her little domain, out of simple ingredients, and in a few minutes, she'd prepare the most tasty meals. I wish I had written down more of her own recipes.
Now she doesn't remember exactly any more.
I love you, Mami. Thank you for all you have done for me. Thank you for your unconditional love. I shall always feel it deep in the core of my whole being.
Manos bendicas. Blessed be your hands, Maman chérie, ad 120, Insh'alla.
For those who don't know, cons generally don't want you to wave weapons around. To prevent this, the gun, sword or knife is tied down to its holster, scabbard or sheath so while it's still there, it can't be pulled out. This is known as "Peace Bonding."
What happened here was that an (in)security guard saw the Death Eater with his wand out and said that was wrong as someone might get stabbed with it. The person who did the "peace bonding" was surprised and put it on this way.
Now what did this "Peace Bonding" of the Death Eater's wand do? He can still do what he was doing before, except there's a little piece of blue paper attached. Maybe it rendered it so the wand can't do any magic, making it just a sharp stick, which he can still wave it around.
I would like to add that there were MANY weapons and wands out and this was just about the only peace bonded item that I saw. If you were Harry Potter or Luna Lovegood, sure, have that wand out all the time. But a Death Eater?? Profiling, that's what I call it.
To sum up:
1) Peace Bonding at CC did NOT mean the weapon was tied down; they could be still waved around.
2) Several people with guns, swords, knives and wands were not peace bonded.
In short...the only thing this did was to help one (in)security guard's ego.
Of course, maybe a representative from Ollivanders took a look and said, "Oak, 11 inches, firm with unicorn tail." And if someone was Avada Kedavred, then M.C.I.S. (Magical Criminal Investigation Service) would be called in and when the body was taken to Forensics and they found the type of wand that was used, they could go to the wands that were registered at the con.
I was later told that the paper band was let Security know the weapon wasn't real. Really?
Those juicy blackcurrants burst in the oven, and started oozing and bubbling everywhere. Mini volcanoes! In the ramekin: our own blackcurrants and some frangipane.
The stories that scare us most, are those that have a ring of truth....
Dark nights at the National Leprechaun Museum. Haunting stories from Ireland’s ancient festival of Samhain. (Evening events for adults only)
In Ireland, the supernatural Otherworld is never far away. It lies beneath a seemingly peaceful and beautiful landscape, just beyond our vision but ready to reveal itself when we least expect it, or unknowingly stir it to life...
In ancient Ireland, Halloween (originally Samhain) is the beginning of the new year, when the veil between our world and the otherworld of the Sí (Irish fairies/spirits) is at its thinnest. A time of reckoning when debts are settled and the spirits move among us...

Following last year’s sell-out success, the National Leprechaun Museum will once again come alive with restless spirits of Halloween.
Take a journey, if you dare, into the dark otherworld of Ireland… a journey through time and space, light and dark, into a world of superstition and frightening reality.
Enter a world of hostile fairies, dark spirits, mischievous púcas and malevolent Sí ógs… A mysterious, frightening and sometimes deadly world lying behind the thin veneer of the world we know.
On the site of an old city morgue, beside a disturbed cemetery...Come and relive some of the stories that inspired a worldwide obsession with Halloween.

Once again inside the walls of Karni Mata Temple, Deshnoke, India. This is one of the children who live in the small community inside the Temple of Rats.
At one of those seminars for action and war photographers back in the sixties or early seventies, Gene Smith and David Douglas Duncan and others participating spelled out how:
(1. Almost all public release/public relations military photography is posed, some of it is fake, and a lot of "combat photography" isn't anything to do with fighting, and not much to do with war!!!!
(2. A lot of military "candid" photography is also bogus, and a lot of that which isn't is somehow garbled by the time it reaches the public.
(3. Really candid combat photography, even some of the more mundane shots, are done during and followed by massive confusion, so there are far more issues than even the photographer ever realizes.
One such photographer explained in detail how his photos in one battle all ran in newspapers in the U.S. describing another, due to mis-edits at various levels. Nothing sinister, just multiple errors compounding.
This is how so many Fort Dix and Camp LeJeune photos wind up identified as either combat or overseas or both, and once in a while an oddity that CANNOT happen winds up being published.
This one is NOT posed, but it was produced from a very sharp 3 1/4" x 4 1/4" contact print image that I am still restoring.
I gave up restoration at this point.
The chit with it and on the sleeve said, "32nd Division infantry waiting to attack".
Trouble is, those are Marines in their HBT's, camo covers, and so on.
They seem to be rigging bangalore's and satchel charges, and the scrawled caption suggests they were preparing to take out a concrete bunker from the rear.
I have begun to think maybe this is Saipan. But the "hard evidence" said Okinawa.
Other interesting factoids: every gas cylinder is dark, seeming to lend credence to what an old former Raider told me, that they carried paint for that purpose in the field and "cooked" the results to obviate glare. He told me this began during the Makin raid, and continued even after the Raiders were disbanded in all the units with which he served.
Every single M1 carries a leather sling, M1907, and so does the Thompson. The Carbines, obviously, feature standard 1" cloth straps.

It’s the fifth year of The Big Lunch – the one day get together for neighbours and the occasion was marked in style recognising all our those neighbourhood heroes who volunteer to host Big Lunches in their streets and communities each year.
The Big Lunch patron HRH The Duchess of Cornwall hosted a prestigious Big Lunch Community Awards at Clarence House, 23 April 2013 recognising five finalists and celebrating the excellent community spirit of all those who have organised a Big Lunch in their neighbourhood since the initiative began in 2009.
The winners were selected following stiff competition from hundreds of neighbourhoods and the judging panel, including, Big Lottery and Big Lunch ambassador Barbara Windsor, earlier this month shortlisted 35 inspiring Big Lunches that had led to further positive community activities.
Our congratulations to the winners– who the judges felt most clearly demonstrated the positive and lasting impact that The Big Lunch has had on their communities:
•Attley Court (Wellingborough, Northants)
•Ballycastle (County Antrim, Northern Ireland)
•Ethel Street (Neath, Wales)
•The South Indian Cultural Centre (Rutherglen, Glasgow)
•Westfield Road (Kings Heath, Birmingham)
Barbara Windsor and Westfield Road Big Lunch organiser, Jess Phillips were interviewed on ITV’s This Morning, Jess said “there’s somebody like me on every street, be brave and join The Big Lunch”

"Let there be light." Thomas Alva Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory and Memorial Tower. Those of us on the Jersey Shore call it the "Big Ass" Lightbulb!
The Edison Tower, located on the site of the original laboratory at Menlo Park, New Jersey, to which Thomas Alva Edison moved in 1876, was erected in 1937 as a monument to the great inventor. The Tower is the gift of William Slocum Barstow to The Thomas Alva Edison Foundation Incorporated, of which˙ he is President, in behalf of the Edison Pioneers. It was dedicated on February 11, 1838, the ninety-first anniversary of the inventor's birth.
Rising 131 ft. 4 in. above the ground, the Tower looms as the highest discernible object for many miles. Surmounting the 117 ft. 8 in. concrete-slab structure is a 13 ft. 8 in. replica of the original incandescent lamp which, illuminated nightly, can be seen for a distance of several miles, serving as an airplane beacon. The foundation of the Tower consists of a structure. The Tower is designed for pressure of wind at a velocity of 120 miles per hour. In its construction, which consumed slightly less than eight months, there were used approximately 1200 barrels of Edison Portland cement and 50 tons of reinforced steel.
The large bulb atop the Tower was cast by the Corning Glass Works, which fifty-nine years ago,, in 1879 furnished from a sketch the first commercial electric light bulb. The replica bulb contains 153 separate pieces of amber tinted Pyrex glass, 2 in. thick, set upon a steel frame. The bulb is 5 ft. in diameter at the neck and 9 ft. 2 in. in diameter at the greatest width and weighs, without the steel frame on which it is placed, in excess of three tons. Inside this Pyrex glass bulb are four 1000 watt bulbs, four 200 watt bulbs, and four 100 watt bulbs. A duplicate of each is so arranged as automatically to cut in should its companion bulb fail.
For a small trek through Delhi’s landscapes, try Northern Ridge, in the winters. Throw in exploration of some of the sites of 1857 which played out in this area, and it is a day well spent. Our heritage walk in Northern Ridge traces a route connecting a few landmarks of 1857 in the Kamla Nehru Northern Ridge. We start at Delhi University Vice Chancellor’s office, which is a notable example of colonial building style. It used to be the Vice Regal Lodge when the new city of Delhi was under construction. One piece of gossip about this building is that it was in the Registrar’s office here that Lord Mountbatten (last Viceroy of India) proposed to Edwina. To complete the triangle & the irony, we now have a bust of Nehru looking wistfully towards the building!!
The second stop on our heritage trail is the Flagstaff Tower. This is the most prominent building on the Ridge & is frequently a part of the British accounts of 1857. It is here that European families took shelter for a night before fleeing from the rebels in Delhi. They waited for reinforcements but when it became apparent that no help could reach them, they escaped towards Karnal. This was ridiculed by the local papers as the ‘English gathering at the flagstaff’. The building is a protected monument & stands on a bit of clearing, at a height. There is vegetation all around now, but contemporary photographs show that the Ridge was mostly barren. The forest was planted by the British after they took over Delhi.
And this protected forest hides many a surprise within it. Some tracks have been made pucca for joggers & those on early morning walks. However, once you move into the interiors the ridge has much more than the monkeys. Some monuments are completely hidden behind vegetation & rocky contours of the terrain. For example, a grave enclosure, a guardhouse & the Khooni Jheel. There are tiny temples which long haired holy men living among the trees; badminton courts & playgrounds, should you care to look. Obviously, this is no deserted jungle. Our walking tour takes us into the interior of the Ridge for a glimpse.
Some distance to the south of Flagstaff Tower is the Chauburja Mosque, or the 4-turret mosque. Considered to be a Tuhgluq-period mosque, it has been much altered over centuries & has evidence of late Mughal architecture as well. It was also the site of a British picket. A little further is the Hindu Rao hospital & the complex has a few sites of interest. A hunting lodge built by Firuz Shah Tughluq stands behind the hospital & now it is locally called Pir Ghaib or the place where a saint vanished from. A completely ruined structure, the complex is also believed to have been an observatory & has a baoli next to it. Bara Hindu Rao was once the residence of William Fraser, the British Resident & after he was murdered, it became the property of Maratha nobleman, Hindu Rao. Close by stands the Ashokan Pillar & again Firuz Shah Tughluq was the one responsible for getting it here from Topra. The last stop on our heritage walk was the Mutiny Memorial built on the site of Taylor’s battery. The inscriptions of the memorial give details of battles between Delhi Field Force & the rebels in 1857. Given that the British version sees the rebellion as a ‘mutiny’ & that they were the winning side, the memorial is called Munity Memorial. There is some attempt by the Indian government to provide the other side of the story as well. There is plaque stating the rebels were fighting against colonial rule, and the monument is now called Jeetgarh (fort of victory) as well!

I just love them! And they're particularly funny across her bum--those horizontal strips do NOTHING for her! Heehee, or perhaps everything. :D
For those that have not heard of Chinese "Hot Pot", it is a type of restaurant where you cook your own food. The square "pot" in the center of the table is heated to a boil with an electric element built into the table. The left side of the split "pot" is a mild broth or soup, and the right side is very spicy (my favorite, YUM). The various meats (fish, pork, beef, etc) are delivered to your table raw. You then use the utensils to lower the raw meats into the boiling broth/soup, and cook it until it is ready to your preference.
Zucchini Muffins
There's been a lot of talk on Facebook amongst my American friends recently about the virtues of Zucchini Muffins (courgettes to those of us in England), so I thought I'd try a little experiment, by combining the ever-so-succesful oat pancake recipe, the half-syn roulade recipe and a traditional carrot cake recipe, but substituting courgettes for the carrots and baking it in muffin cases rather than cake tins. I peeled the courgette because the skin was a little blemished, but this should not be necessary. Of course, you may want to peel it to avoid having green bits in your muffins.
The result was way better than I had hoped for. The cake was light, moist and tasty, with the consistency of a bread pudding, and the taste was very spicy and fruity.
Serves 4*
1 Syn on Extra Easy**
** Providing you use the oats as your Healthy Extra B
You could, of course, omit the sultanas and make the cake almost syn free, as there is only ½ syn in the baking powder. I thought the sultanas were worth the syns though.
70g porridge oats
1 tub Müllerlight toffee yogurt
2-3 tbsp sugar free appleade
1 large courgette, grated
½ cup sweetener or to taste
2 tsp mixed spice
20g sultanas (total 3 syns)
2 eggs, separated
1 tsp baking powder (total ½ syns)
Start the day before you want to eat the cakes. Soak the oats in the yogurt with 1 tbsp appleade, the spices and sweetener overnight. In a separate small bowl, soak the sultanas in just enough appleade to cover them.
The next day, whisk the egg whites until soft peaks form. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg yolks with the baking powder. I find it is best at this stage to taste the oat mixture and adjust the spices or sweetener if necessary. Mix together the oats, grated courgettes and sultanas with the egg yolks and stir thoroughly. Carefully fold in the egg whites and pour into 12 muffin cases. Bake at 200°C for 10-15 minutes until a skewer comes out clean and the top feels spongy. Mine took a bout 18 minutes in total.
This image is not about a simple laugh. It is about the moment when a group closes ranks against someone and turns humiliation into spectacle. The phone becomes the center of the scene, the device that captures, amplifies, and delivers the target to the complicit gaze of the others. The laughter here is not innocent: it is compliance, alignment, a small training in cruelty.
What is disturbing is not only the act of mocking, but its function. People laugh to belong, to please, to remain on the side of those who hold more strength, more voice, more power. This is how abuse becomes normalized: not only through those who exercise it openly, but also through those who accompany it, make it acceptable, and turn it into a collective habit.
In this photograph, the real subject is not the single face exposed on the screen, but the mechanism that binds the others together. The pack is often born this way: from a light, almost cheerful consensus that nonetheless prepares the ground for moral violence. Those who learn to mock in order to please also learn to serve. And those who serve abuse, even without directly dirtying their hands, help keep it alive.
