On November 11th our thoughts should turn to all of those men and women who have, and do, risk their lives daily to preserve our freedom. This particular date was chosen because on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918 the cease fire that ended WW I took place. Known as Armistice Day, or Remembrance Day, in other parts of the world, it brought to an end what will live indelibly in our memories as “The Great War.”
The excerpt below from an article by Abe Katsman written in 2011 shares an interesting thought regarding how soldiers are, and should be, honored in their homeland while at the same time reflecting how great the sacrifices made for them can sometimes be:
Today is Veterans Day in America, observed as Remembrance Day or Armistice Day in much of the world, commemorating the 1918 armistice signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany ending hostilities on the Western Front. It is a day on which much of the free world honors the service and sacrifice of our veterans, both living and dead.
As to Israel, primarily because 1918 pre-dated Israel's independent existence by 30 years, Israel does not have an official commemoration of the day. And that is unfortunate. Especially for Gilad Shalit.
Currently Israel's best-known soldier, Shalit was ransomed just weeks ago from his Hamas kidnappers, after five years of isolation, in exchange for 1,027 convicted terrorists imprisoned by Israel. The lopsided exchange prompted countless arguments, most of which boiled down to one question: what is the value of one man's life?
David, perhaps Israel’s greatest warrior of all time, knew the importance of God in battle. He wrote in Psalm 144:1, “Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle.” Though God equips us for war, He actually covets peace - - especially for His Holy City. That’s why in Psalm 122:6 we are directed to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem.” What a wonderful way to celebrate Veterans Day - - by praying for peace!

The heart's the revelator of all that is hidden;

For those of you in "Flickrland" who are following this as a Travel Log, this next group of 71 shots, which are numbered from #5625 through #3772, were all shot on 10 August 2013.
There is a mix of shots from my Canon 6D and the Fuji X20. We covered a lot of territory this day.
I can't recall the story here. I think maybe there had been a fire, and the folks were rebuilding the church, a community effort.
The Veterans groups in our valley got together and with the help of donations, made panels depicting all the names on the Viet Nam War Memorial. They move it around the cities in the valley and put on display. My sister and I place a tag for my brother on the memorial they set up for those who were from our valley.
I've had an interesting few weeks. The photography gods are smiling on me right now.
The wedding I assisted on opened my eyes to many things, one of those being customer service. Without customer service I'm just another shmuck who takes a pic. Who cares if you take a brilliant picture if you come across as uncaring, egocentric and self-obsessed. Not a way to win a loyal clientelle base.
Realizing this brought me to the point where I knew that I needed to step up my game and promote myself: "Put up or shut up Kat!"
Part of my current full-time job is selling advertising and so I know full well that you have to hang a shingle for someone to know you're there. Clients won't come knocking if they don't know you exist, so I setup a storefront on my photokat.ca site. Plowed it under and started from scratch. I also had an inquiry earlier this week for a last minute wedding that was a direct result of my website, okay and some free classified ads on Craigslist and Kijiji. Unfortunately, it's right smack in the middle of when I'm leading an 8 day canoe trip at a camp in northern Ontario (Why did I do that again?) so I had to politely turn it down, but suggested several other highly capable local photogs to the bride.
I'm also fortunate to have a gorgeous sister who also works as a trained graphic designer and so I recruited her to design a logo for me (I'll post it for y'all to see) and somehow I ended up with a fairly high end looking logo. Thanks sis I owe you!
My nights and an occasional work day have revolved around me reading, researching, studying and planning. I've drawn up a list of goals for Photography by Kat, created contracts, Photography Menus (price list), researched products for that menu, and just spent the last while obsessing, planning, scheming and creating what I hope will become more than just a passionate side hobby.
The goal is for Photography by Kat to be my main source of good income by the time I'm 30. For the record I'm 26 right now, so that gives me four years.
This is all very scary, and incredible, wild, exciting and yet I'm still left with feelings of inadequacy. I've also been looking at other photography sites and I keep seeing pictures I wish I had taken and that I want to take. I guess that's good, but it terrifies me and I think that's what I will always keep pushing myself at: figuring out what my style is that makes me unique.
I'm tired of seeing those posed "photojournalistic" style wedding photos or portrait sessions that everyone does but what to do that is different, creative, interesting. Everything old is new again and so maybe I need to delve into some photographic history to find something.
And that I think, is the longest, scariest thing I've written on Flickr.
A girl in the market in Iganga. I asked her mother if I might take her picture. She finally agreed and the girl was almost a statue; she never moved the whole time I was there. Her expression never changed. She is so beautiful and intense, I wish I'd had a chance to learn more about her.

You know those headaches where you feel you need to hold your head or else it will leak things? And you want the whole world to go a few shades darker? Yeh? This is one of those days. So your not getting anything decent! Ha! look at me making excuses for crappy sps only on my 8th day! Go me and my laziness!!
On 27 February 2013 the Faculty of Law hosted an important and lively debate between Lord Sumption and Professor Graham Virgo on the motion 'Those who wish to Practise Law should not Study Law at University'.
Sir Patrick Elias, Lord Justice of Appeal, who chaired the debate, kept order in a packed auditorium.
