No, those are not stone toilets deep in the Aragonese Castle on Italy's Island of Ischia; that where the Poor Clares cloistered nuns placed their dead... left to ooze out to bones over time.
Each day, the nuns would enter the small room to pray, the stench serving a reminder of our ephemeral earthly life.
This is an odd habit (so to speak) that started about 400 years ago. I have to wonder how the sicko that first thought of doing this pitched it to the other nuns... "Now hear me out..."

Fall never ceases to impress me. There are colors and textures that go on and on. I will never get tired of shooting fall.
This was taken in a small Japanese town called Tayama. This tree was near an elementary school. It has some of the most beautiful fall leaves I've ever seen.
I shot a portrait session with Alexi and her friend Logan recently. Man, those eyes get me every time.

During the Spanish Civil War, the term "acting lieutenant" was coined for Those officers who, given the heavy casualties that occurred in the officer corps of the rebel side as the conflict dragged on, voluntarily enlisted in the army and directly obtained by the use of ensign have a secondary or higher education. All this to meet the career officers.
The National Defense Council, installed in Burgos, published his decree number 94 in the month of September 1936, instituting the figure. Officers were created and "improvised" to supplement the shortage of middle management. The term "provisional" stemmed from the fact that its commitment to engaging the army was limited to the duration of the war.
Old monasteries, ancient palaces and several barracks were used as the first academy for provisional second lieutenants promotions Burgos, Seville, Granada, Fuencaliente, Avila, Pamplona and Dar Riffien (Tetuan, Morocco2). There, after a short training period (sometimes four weeks, in other stretched to seven), the ensigns became section chiefs, and could move up to lieutenant for acts of combat. In their ranks included many university teachers colleges, technical schools or school students. Notably the baptized as "Fifth of SEU", composed of the student volunteers who were members of the Falange party and Requete.
The hallmark of the provisional lieutenants, whose captain was General Orgaz, consisted of a six-pointed star, placed on a black cloth rectangle in the warrior, shirt or jacket. This rectangle was called patch or stamp, and hence the name "stamped" as it was known to both in the interim national and republican.
The provisional lieutenants, were by their youth or their strong ideology, distinguished by his courage, which produced a high number of casualties among them (even coined aphorisms: "Ensign complement, when body" or "acting lieutenant , effective body "). As proclaimed the first call that appeared in the Government Gazette, must serve "in preference to those that are part of the columns in operations." This resulted in bravery medals and personal accolades: it crosses come to count eleven Laureates and 236 individual military medals. Six of the rewarded with this award twice achieved it.
Most cities in Spain, once the war was won by the pro-Franco side, dedicated a street, in the singular, in recognition of all of them, the Provisional Ensign.

This nearly 2,000 foot, 6 concrete arch bascule lift bridge was completed in 1917 at the cost of $1.1 million. At the time of its completion, the 300-foot main span was the longest rolling-lift bascule span in the world.
The double-leaf, Sherzer type, steel truss, bascule span are so well balanced with the large cement counter weights on each end that a 25-horse powered motor is used to start the lifting process for each leaf.
The bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on December 20, 2010.

Those who are familiar with my Flickr stream will know I am a spider lover (along with all creepy crawlies), so for me, this experience was quite sad.
I was out planting some plants we had just picked up, and while digging, I noticed I had squashed a soft white ball like object. I had a closer look and noticed that it was actually a sack containing tiny spiderlings. They were obviously extremely new as they were barely recognisable as spiders (1mm if that) and they were motionless. (I wouldn't have applied enough pressure to kill them)
I continued on planting and then my wife pointed out a rather large spider by my hand. It didn't occur to me at first, but I soon realised it must have been the mother.
I tried to move it along, out of harms way, by giving her a poke in the behind, but she refused to budge. She kept walking around the area where I found the sack.
Most people are probably aware that the female wolf spider is known for carrying her young around on her back, but this motherly instinct was beyond what I thought a spider was capable of. Not even my digging or my two dogs strolling around deterred her. Quite brave but in no way aggressive (to my surprise).
I'm not sure if spiders have emotions, but if it's possible, then she appeared to be showing signs of worry and depression.
One of my more interesting spider encounters, that's for sure. Just a shame that it all began with the loss of her little ones.
Those houses are built of woven bamboos with ijuk leaves. Some houses there might last for up to 25 years (in one condition: the roof should be changed once per 5 years). Baduy people don't believe in technology, so don't expect electrical goods/modern living here.
Just imagine a peaceful place, surrounded by verdant atmosphere. Sound of nature the rustle of the wind amidst the bamboo leaves, the chirping of the birds, the faint rush of the river.

St Andrew, Walberswick, Suffolk
It wasn't unusual for 15th century Suffolk communities to rebuild their churches in the fashionable perpendicular style. Within ten miles, you can visit Blythburgh, Lowestoft St Margaret, Covehithe, and most famously Southwold. The same happened here - or, not quite. In those other parishes, the rebuilding of the church happened on the site of the old one, and often incorporated bits of the former fabric. Here, the new church replaced an old one that was more than a mile away.
We know a good bit about the old parish church of Walberswick, because records survive. We know about its bells and its thatched roof; we know about its images and stained glass windows. We know that, in 1492, the year Columbus first landed on the shores of the Americas, the new church built to replace it was completed. It was a grand affair, much on a scale with the other local churches previously mentioned.
Intriguingly, the tower of the new church is 70 years older. There was a chapel of ease to the old church on this site, and the tower was built to enhance it. The chapel was then demolished to make way for the new church. By the end of the 15th century, one of the grandest parish churches in England stood here. The windows, images and bells were moved here from the old church.
If you come here today, it may be because you are one of the Londoners discovering Walberswick, finding the charms that recently got it mentioned in a Sunday Colour Supplement as one of England's most fashionable watering holes, still cheaper than over-rated Southwold across the river. Or perhaps you are a Suffolker, and come because Walberswick is the world capital of crabbing. Whatever, the road into the village takes you past this church, and it must entrance you, it cannot fail to do so, for today, St Andrew at Walberswick is one of Suffolk's most dramatic ruins.
You approach from the south east, and the grand tower conceals the fact that the walls of the nave and chancel are a curtain, surrounding an open space. Within this is a smaller church, of little architectural interest, but of considerable social and historical significance. But to the ruins first.
The ruins suggest a building so like Blythburgh and Southwold that, if we are familiar with those two churches, we can read the missing pieces in this one. The aisles continue almost to the eastern wall of the chancel. Altar piscinas give us a sense of the liturgical life of this place. The grand arrays of windows in the south and north aisles allow us to imagine it like Blythburgh, full of light. Those from the north aisle were taken out and placed in the north wall of the new, smaller church that huddles in the ruins. All the coloured glass has gone, destroyed by Puritans in April 1644. They were probably also responsible for removing the brasses that once sat in the indents in the aisle, although their loss may equally be the responsibility of 18th and 19th century collectors.
There were Priest doors on both sides of the chancel; on your journey through the ruins, you walk in through one, and out through the other. There's another in the south side of the sanctuary.
What happened here? Within 50 years of this great Catholic church being erected in the 1490s, the Catholic church was driven from this land by the state centrist forces of Henry VIII and his children. Instead of living the colourful, sacramental life for which the building was erected, the parishioners became listeners, subject to the congregational, Anglican worship of the new Church of England. Simply, there were not enough of them to sustain such a large building.
The 17th century's long years of puritan darkness only exacerbated the problem, and by the 1690s the parishioners asked permission to demolish the old church, and build a much smaller one in the ruins. Permission was granted, and this was done, with the proviso that the tower be retained as a landmark for ships at sea. The same thing happened just up the coast at Covehithe. The bells were sold off to fund the work.
As you wander among the ruins, you will find a plaque on the north side commemorating the churchwardens who ordered the destruction, and oversaw the building of the new church, Edward Collins & John Taylor churchwardens in the yeare when the church was rebuilt and in the eight year of the reign of our sovereign Lord King William the Third AD 1696. Enthusiastic Protestants, then, and perhaps we should not despair of them. After all, any Parish church is a document of the buffeting winds of history that have swept over Suffolk in the last thousand years. At worst, they were pragmatists, preparing a space that was fitting for the worship of the times.
The new church was built in the west end of the south aisle - the old structure completely dwarfs it, and if you stand at the west end of the old nave you are outside, gazing up at the impossibly high roofline with its sanctus bell window.
If you step into Collins and Taylor's little church, you find yourself in a space that feels older than the considerable 19th century restorations in the villages round about. The grand font will catch your eye, surviving as it does from the 15th century building. Intriguingly, it is set beside the remains of one of the pillars that divided the nave from the south aisle.
The church is full of moving little details; the memorials to fishermen lost at sea, the collection of medieval coloured glass rescued from the ruins and put together as a mosaic in the south aisle. The pulpit and the screen survive from the 15th century church, although the screen is only a remnant, of course. The pulpit sits on another pillar fragment. Most moving of all is the supermensa, set in the top of the altar; this was a consecrated stone slab used in medieval times by travelling priests. It was recovered from the ruins shortly before the Second World War. A simple, twisted driftwood cross stands on top of it.
The ruins here are haunting, not because they are ancient - they aren't. Rather, they give us a brief window into what happened in England between their construction in the 1490s, and their destruction 200 years later. They are a document of the English Reformation, and its uneasy years of settlement. This is high drama indeed.
