This was probably one of the most difficult things I’ve ever been asked to do… It’s not everyday that you’re given
the opportunity to reflect on the last 20+ years of your life… and then condense it all into a toast. But here I am…
and not only did I get to relive all those moments, now I get to share some of them with you.
Leena and I met when we were both either 6 or 7yrs old… in elementary school at KI Jones. From all outward
appearances, I don’t think we could have been any more different… But beneath it all, we became fast friends in
our own way… basing class assignments around our fantasy worlds and inside jokes, walking the half mile home
together after school, comparing notes on Saturday morning cartoons -- even getting up at the crack of dawn to
watch Dinosaucers or Thundercats, and of course sharing all kinds of birthdays and life events.
After a few years, my family moved out of the neighborhood and we ended up in different school districts. We
crossed paths again in high school, and haven’t lost touch since.
Back when it was still common to send letters via snail mail, we would write each other… constantly keeping tabs
on one another, and always being sure to use the most unique stationary we could find. If we couldn’t find worthy
stationary, it came down to whatever crazy chotchki or random THING we could squeeze into an envelope.
Between her frequent trips to Korea, and of course her legendary craft-consciousness rearing its head even back
then,… it was definitely a David vs. Goliath match-up.
Not that it was ever a competition. I just felt guilty that I couldn’t return the favor equally. Being a middle child, I
guess you grow up with a complex about keeping everything balanced and fair….
The summer after graduating high school though, I finally had my chance. As a graduation present, my parents let
me tag along with my older sister to Hong Kong who was heading out for a year abroad. I was also given some
spending money, to enjoy a little souvenir shopping.
Once I got there… what did I do with it? Spent nearly every dime …on stationary. Screw the cheap electronics,
pirated CDs, and knock-off clothes that said Poxy instead of Roxy… I wanted letter sets and notepads, colorful
cards cut into whimsical shapes, funky stickers of all different sizes and any scrap of paper with cutesy asian
cartoon characters spewing weird English phrases like “Friendship make a happiness double times…”
And despite the fact that my parents practically choked when they saw how much I came home with… just like
that, I FINALLY had an arsenal that could actually match the high standards of what Leena was already sending
me.
While letters gradually turned more to email… we still didn’t forget the chotchkis. THAT became its own
legendary tradition that continues on to this day. Rather than just one or two random bits though… it’s become an
entire box full. We literally exchange boxes chock full of JUNK…. And yet… it feels like Christmas every time I
open them up, each one more of a sentimental reminder of how far we’ve come together.
So after all these years, … here we are today…. Both happily married, despite the fact that we swore to each other
we would ultimately become hermit-esque bag ladies together, with our mountains of stationary, 80s cartoon
reruns, arts & crafts projects, and about 50 cats to keep us company.
But after having met Michael, and gotten to know him over the years… that is definitely one promise I’m more
than happy to break.
Michael, thank you for loving her for who she is – quirky idiosyncrasies and all, for being her perfect match in
everything you do, and for completing her in more ways than she’ll ever admit to or realize.
Leena, you’re a sister to me in so many ways. You have made the last 20+ years of my life so colorful and
extraordinary…. Thank you for being you, and for all your love and friendship.
Here’s raising a glass to you both -- Congratulations on your marriage, and for finding such joy in one another!

These are the incredible results of all those wonderful volunteers! Enjoy the natural beauty they have brought to light once more!
WOW – That is the only word I can use to describe the hard work of all our incredible volunteers today! Despite blowing a master cylinder on on Cleanup Truck knocking it out of commission half way thought the event, on 4/11/15 we worked with over 180 volunteers to nor only completely cleanup Bread and Cheese Creek, but to clean all the bordering streets along the stream, remove a huge trash and log jam at the pumping station, clean the alleys in Berksire bordering the stream, clean the hill on Berkshire Road behind the BP station and they also continued cleaning up the woods behind the North Point Plaza Flea Market!!!! In all the removed enough trash to overfill a 40 yard dumpster (a front end loader was brought in to smash everything down and make more room) and we filled a dump truck as well! This included over 590 bags of trash, 21 tires, 8 shopping carts, 2 toilets, 2 trashcans, lots of sheet-rock, a mattress, a toilet!!
We would like thank all our wonderful volunteers who came out and made such an amazing difference! We would also like to thank LaFarge for feeding everyone with their delicious Jack Daniels Pulled Pork Barbeque sandwiches, Pat’s Pizza and Pizza Hut for donating pizzas to feel our army of volunteers, and Entenmanns Discount Bakery for donating lots of donuts to keep our sugar up during the event. We would also like to thank the Johns Hopkins Green Team for donating trash bags, hand sanitizer, trash pickers, and granola bars. And of course we have to thank the Alliance for the Chesapeake Park for donating trash bags, and gloves. Thank you everyone for all your hard work today and for making an amazing difference for our environment and the community!

"Let there be light." Thomas Alva Edison's Menlo Park Laboratory and Memorial Tower. Those of us on the Jersey Shore call it the "Big Ass" Lightbulb!
The Edison Tower, located on the site of the original laboratory at Menlo Park, New Jersey, to which Thomas Alva Edison moved in 1876, was erected in 1937 as a monument to the great inventor. The Tower is the gift of William Slocum Barstow to The Thomas Alva Edison Foundation Incorporated, of which˙ he is President, in behalf of the Edison Pioneers. It was dedicated on February 11, 1838, the ninety-first anniversary of the inventor's birth.
Rising 131 ft. 4 in. above the ground, the Tower looms as the highest discernible object for many miles. Surmounting the 117 ft. 8 in. concrete-slab structure is a 13 ft. 8 in. replica of the original incandescent lamp which, illuminated nightly, can be seen for a distance of several miles, serving as an airplane beacon. The foundation of the Tower consists of a structure. The Tower is designed for pressure of wind at a velocity of 120 miles per hour. In its construction, which consumed slightly less than eight months, there were used approximately 1200 barrels of Edison Portland cement and 50 tons of reinforced steel.
The large bulb atop the Tower was cast by the Corning Glass Works, which fifty-nine years ago,, in 1879 furnished from a sketch the first commercial electric light bulb. The replica bulb contains 153 separate pieces of amber tinted Pyrex glass, 2 in. thick, set upon a steel frame. The bulb is 5 ft. in diameter at the neck and 9 ft. 2 in. in diameter at the greatest width and weighs, without the steel frame on which it is placed, in excess of three tons. Inside this Pyrex glass bulb are four 1000 watt bulbs, four 200 watt bulbs, and four 100 watt bulbs. A duplicate of each is so arranged as automatically to cut in should its companion bulb fail.
This is one of those rare found photos with complete information on the back. This is Donald and Charlotte Wimp Butler (in front) of Sullivan, Illinois, with their children Betty, Donald Jr., Charlotte Jr., and Ruth. The photo was taken in 1959. My sister Jooly bought it for me this year at a garage sale here in Louisville. In doing some online searching for the family, I discovered that Mrs. Butler was a native of Louisville, and both she and her husband attended the University of Louisville. The library there has a collection of their letters, photos, publications and memorabilia, a description of which is viewable online.
"Charlotte Wimp, a native of Louisville, attended U of L from 1912 to 1917. She was an avid outdoors woman who loved hiking, camping and basketball. She organized a girls group of the Boy Scouts of America in 1911-1912. While at U of L she played on the women's basketball team, serving as captain in her sophomore year.
"Charlotte was a prolific letter writer. During WWI she corresponded with several young male friends in the armed forces. Their letters reflect the hurry-up-and-wait life in camp and the boredom of being in a tent in France. Charlotte helped relieve their homesickness and boredom with her newsy letters and cartoons.
"Donald Butler, a native of Sullivan, Illinois, graduated from college in Illinois, and taught for one year before entering the U of L Dental School, graduating in 1921. He was active in basketball and track in high school and college. While in Dental School he played on the men's basketball team, serving as captain one year. He was named to the All-State team his senior year. He retained his interest in track, and ran and won a race on New Years Day 1921. He helped organize and raise money for an indoor track meet held at the Armory that same year.

Almost 100% of those waiting to give to the monks were ladies. Here are some of them wearing scarves for increased modesty in preparation for the arrival of the monks. I found several other of the devouts, even in other spots aound the area, wearing identical scarves, probably denoting that they were all bought from a nearby store close by. Those were more or less the words I said to my husband who had gone out to the garden to straighten up a fallen fence around one of our dahlia plants (have to do that because of deer). Twice he walked between the one you see here and the one he was fixing. All the time he was about 2" from this guy's head. He never saw him. Glad I came out at that particular time. Of course, I said, hang on a sec, going back in for my camera. Wouldn't you?
I thought I got there too late. My feet were placed squarely on the blacktop parking lot at one of my favorite soul places, a space I have been to recently but haven’t been to, ever, to simply be and write.
Sam and I used to come here during his home school day to collect wood and explore and we still come here so he can ride on the tire swing and we can throw rocks into the river. We have explored the area fully and know it pretty well from those moments, but I wanted to come to know this place intimately by connecting to it quietly, with my body connected to its body, my soul connected mindfully to its center.
The autumn-colored leaves I would kick away from the foot path were long gone, returned to the Earth. Their crunchy selves had surrendered completely and I had missed that process.
Then I stepped into a spot off the path, by a small stream to sit and write and I realized I hadn’t missed the process at all. I stepped onto what looked like Earth and instead, I was stepping into a pile of leaves that was choosing to merge with the soil. My choice to take a moment or two or sixty to be in a space of quiet soulfulness was graciously allowing me to become a part of the process, too.
I discovered how deeply they had piled themselves up, creating a soft sofa and pillows just for me so that I could sit upon them and experience them, their luscious returning-to-dirt-scent. They seemed to giggle as I sat down with my paper and pink notepaper and trusty black mirado warrior and started to move it, contentedly, along the page.
In that moment it was as if the leaves hugged me, welcoming my reality to rise up and meet my longing, leftover from months ago when I was in a time of profound sadness, a time when I wasn’t able to settle into their crackly, crisp newly fallen selves. Instead, I got to sit upon their softened not quite moist selves.
It was then that I heard the unsurrendered leaves, the ones still on the trees that pushed against one another, applauding my return. It is like those leaves held on, bravely, past their amber-golden time to their withered crusty selves so I could hear my message.
Divinity says, “Be with me. Trust. Follow my lead. Don’t try so hard, but do know the strategy that works best, beloved one.”
I felt an exclamation point rise up as two trucks rumbled past and the wind blew and suddenly I was aware that my stomach was telling me of its hunger.
The exclamation was part celebration as I heard the words “Beloved one!” and knew Divinity meant me.
I sat, still, for a moment, just being with the leaves and the trees and the water. I heard a frog singing her song. I smiled in gratitude.
I wrote:
Sometimes surrender comes quickly and sometimes the holding on, like the crusty withered leaves held on, is the surrender. It is in the unknowing of whether or not its right or wrong and being ok with it no matter which way the judgment or comparison lands that holds the power of truth.
Today, do I go deeper? I asked. Do I go further on the path, closer to the larger parts of the river, or did I get what I was supposed to get here, on my leaves-turning-to-dirt sofa.
I smelled the leaves below me, supporting me. I heard the wind play my ears like a drum and the grass and leaves pirouetting and doing a grande jete or many grande jetes. I watched a plane use the air as a mattress. A man with a grey covered hood covering his head and speckled deck shoes covering his feet walked silently behind my surrendered leaf throne.
SUVs and pick up trucks a stone’s throw away rumbled past, separated by steel from all this wonder right here, oh so close.
Did any of the drivers or passengers capture the bright pink of my shirt out of the corner of their eye, strikingly out of context in this place I sat, deeply entrenched in awe?
It doesn’t matter whether they do or do not, but I prayed for each of them anyway.
I realized then that although I hadn’t gone deeper on the path, I had gone deeper.
My heart was swollen with joy.
I wasn’t too late. I was right on time.

1968 Epiphone Century (N.O.S.) (SOLD)
For those of you who don't know what N.O.S. is, it stands for New Old Stock, and refers to something that has never been sold by the original dealer. It has long since been discontinued, or in this case has become a vintage gem. This one came from a dealer here in the Midwest. Made by Gibson from 1957 til 1970, Kalamazoo Epiphones are every bit as good as their Gibson counterparts, and in some cases better or cooler. Like it's brother, the Gibson ES-125T, the Century is a true hollow arch-top, and has a single P-90 pickup. But unlike the 125 which is tobacco sunburst, this is a rich Cherry finish, and has that distinctive elongated Epiphone headstock and raised E badge(slashed C) on a white pickguard. It has a tiny "2" stamped on the back of the headstock indicating "second" condition, usually because of a blemish, but we couldn't find a mark on it. If you are looking for something to put in the collection, this would be a choice piece as N.O.S. pieces don't come around very often. But if you are looking for a distinctive American classic to play and record, this may be in your budget, also. Either way, it has been many years since we've had something like this come through the store, and it won't be on display. SOLD!

The historically famous Koti Chennayya Kambala race is held annually at Moodabidri. At that time Kambala was the event when farmers paid tribute to their gods for protecting their crops. There used to be lot of celebration and games as part of this festive atmosphere. Some say Kambala also marked the beginning of sowing operations for the second round of crops.
Currently its more politically motivated rather than any kind of a tribute.. Kambala has been criticised by animal lovers as inhumane and barbaric due to use of whips on participating buffaloes. Noted animal right activist, Mrs. Maneka Gandhi has expressed serious concerns about the ill treatment of buffaloes during the race. There are huge sums of prize money for the winners along with all round betting for each of the race..

Hillsboro police officer Jesus Rios was patrolling one evening when he was flagged down by the frantic parents of a two-week-old boy. Their baby wasn’t breathing and, after calling 9-1-1, they were now on the way to the hospital.
Rios, who served as an Army medic, knew just what to do when the parents handed him the baby – he gave two small rescue breaths and started performing infant CPR. After a long moment, the baby responded, smiling and squeezing Rios’ finger. While paramedics and physicians later stepped in to help, it was Officer Rios’ actions that saved the life of this newborn.
