Looking down the covered walkway of Merchants' Row. The storefront closest was originally the Opera House that was built circa 1840.
"The original building was a small one-story structure. It was widened and an upper story and the present storefront was constructed between 1850-1860. The building has been used as a photographer's studio, a U.S. Post Office, a general merchandise."

The second building seen in this section of the row was the Parks Dry Goods Store, circa 1840.
"Parks Dry good Store was built in 1840. The Parks Store was owned by William Huston Parks, the brother in law of Wallace Green, the local druggist. In 1870, Mr. Parks bought the store from another local store owner. A shrewd businessman, Mr. Parks opened three other stores in the 1800's, an unusual occurrence for that time. Including the Parks Store in Perryville, branches of the business also spread into Washington County and Mackville. During the earliest days of the store's existence, the store stocked boots, shoes, groceries and dry goods. Families from the surrounding areas would shop for supplies to last them for nearly the entire year. All would be bought in large quantity from nails by the keg to flour by the barrel. On March 18, 1918 Mr. Parks' daughter, Lora Parks, began to work for the store, but her father did not think it proper for young ladies to do public work. Despite her father's dissatisfaction with employing her, Miss Lora continued to work, and in July of 1930, following the death of her parents, she bought out the heirs and continued to own and operate the store until her own death in 1972. For over 100 years Parks Store was owned and operated by the same family."

A community corner store in Boston's north end. Now, if you're not familiar with Boston or the New England accents, you might miss the point that this store's name is written out phonetically. (Connah instead of Corner... some call it the "preservation of R's" theory, while others debate that it's more of a reallocation of R's instead.) The part I find even funnier than the name, however, is that the whole sign is hand painted except for the words describing the goods found inside. Those have been left exposed from the sign they painted over in the first place. The whole thing just drips of New England resourcefulness.

yesterday Anda & I went to a crazyyy thrift shop downtown. It was so much fun, only I was so overwhelmed I thought I was dreaming!
They had a lot of religious articles for sale -- much of it looked like it must have come from an old Catholic church in Argentina. The list price on the angel: $1,650.

I love this building.
This street is located in the historic district of Midvale Utah. The street has been used in many Hollywood movies including "The Stand" and (one of my favorite films) "The Sand Lot"
Vincents remaind a local land mark for decades but is now just an empty and
abandoned building. Time is slowly breaking down the facade but we'll always have the pictures.

The Park Central Mall was constructed in 1957 as the first suburban shopping mall in Phoenix. After the mall started to founder in the late 1980s, the department stores started to close. Robinson's was the first of the department stores to close here at Park Central. The mall has been adaptively reused into office space for health care offices.

this macy's department store in Palo Alto is one of the last surviving classic brick architecture of its time still standing at the Stanford Shopping Center which so far manages to survive commercially as well. Love the arches and the court in front of it has just been remodeled.

The Rosenberg Dept. Store was the earliest retail business in Granite City having been established in 1893. The store was located at the corner of 19th and State Street. In 1935, the Rosenberg store was remodeled by the new owners and called the Leader Department Store. This photograph can also be seen in the book "Granite City: A Pictorial History."
1115 6th Street. The business went through several name changed over the years. In the 1930s, the company was known as Ambrose's Dry Goods and Ready-to-Wear. During the the 1940-1950s, it was known as Ambrose's Store. In 1960-1970s, it was called Ambrose Department Store. The business closed in the late 1980s. Photo taken in 1961.
