For those of you wondering where the whole flavored coffee drink plague started, look no further. The very first Starbucks opened in 1971 at Seattle’s own Pike Place Market. Here, a street band entertains in front of store-1 while soon-to-be coffee quaffers stand in a long line in hopes of obtaining there favorite, glorious hot brew.

Oamaru.Oamaru at the estuary of the Waitaki River was a major Maori settlement area where over 1,000 middens have been searched. This was a major home of the Moa hunting Maoris of the 1300s and 1400s. Whalers visited the Otago coast here in the 1830s and the first white settlers came around 1850. The town of Oamaru was declared in 1859. Local quarries provided an extremely hard form of very white limestone for many of the buildings. The town grew as a service centre for the agricultural hinterland. Its boom period was in the 1870s and 1880s when its heritage buildings were erected. Since the port closed in 1970 the town has slumped industrially but has reinvented itself as a heritage city. It contains over 70 buildings on the NZ heritage list. Some of the historic buildings, many built of white Oamaru stone along Thames Street include the Waitaki Council Chambers, the former Municipal Chambers now the Opera House 1907, the Court House 1883, the Boer War Memorial, the Queens Hotel 1884, the Mechanics Institute 1882, the Post Office 1884, the National Bank 1870 etc. There are many more buildings in nearby Tyne Street and Harbour Street. This is adjacent to the port and the railway. Oamaru was a major exporter of frozen meat and this area blossomed with beautiful classical style warehouses in the late 1870s and the early 1880s. The warehouses stored grain and wheat and wool. Many of the buildings were designed by the well-respected local architectural partnership of Forrester and Lemon. This was the heyday of growth and importance of Oamaru. After the demise of the international port in the 1970s (in favour of Christchurch and Dunedin) the warehouses closed and the area became run down. Most of the area was taken over by the Oamaru Harbour Civic Trust in the late 1980s. The wonderful old buildigns have been restored where necessary and they have been leased out to art galleries, bookshops, antiques stores, fashion houses, cafes and bed and breakfast establishments. Oamaru heritage precinct has become a major tourist draw card for the city and it is a wonderful example of what can be done with historic centres of cities to revitalise them rather than demolish them. New Zealand knows how to sensibly preserve the past.

Updated photos taken on January 15,2010. of the shopping center at the corner of La Brea and Rodeo in Los Angeles, California. The Baldwin Hills area.

Well, the economy must have really tanked, Big Lots pulled the plug on this store, which only operated a few years at this location. Its last tennant was a Savon Drug Store (see below). The parking lot was always crowded and it is located at a very busy intersection with high visability. Big Lots closed on 1/14/2010. Photo of interior of former Big Lots Store.

This shopping center has been through several transformations over the years. Originally the center contained: a SAFEWAY SUPERMARKET, a CLARK DRUGS AND a JJ NEWBERY (a.k.a. Newberrys) Store. When SAFEWAY left this site, the store was converted to Clark Drugs. When Sav-on Drug Stores took over Clark Drugs, the site became a Sav-on Drug Store. Finally Sav-on built a new store across the street. Pic N Save Stores took over the former Sav-on site. Finally, the corporate parent of Pic N Save changed its name and this store is now known as Big Lots.

In the middle was a Clark Drug, which relocated to the SAFEWAY Supermarket site as it was originally in the center section of the main shopping center. The movement of the stores was the result of a major renovation of this shopping center. The renovation occurred around the the 1970s. The SAFEWAY now Big Lots Store is on the far left.

In the center of the original main shopping center was Clarks. Then JJ Newberry took over the Clark Drug Store Site. After JJ Newberry closed down in the late 1990s, the store sat vacant until a small retail chain Treasure Hunt Stores took over.

Lastly, on the far right was a former JJ Newberry Store. This site converted to a BOYS Supermarket. When the BOYS Supermarket's corporate parent Yucaipa took over the Ralphs Grocery Company, mid 1990s, this store became a Ralphs Supermarket. It was remodeled in 2000+.

There is also a McDonalds Restaurant on the corner.

This shopping center located directly across from several retail centers including an Albertsons Supermarket and a Rite Aid Pharmacy with a Del Taco on another corner. CVS Pharmacy is on another corner. The CVS Pharmacy, former Sav-on Drug Store is a stand alone building. On the last corner is a row of shops, eating places, and buildings. Those shops include KFC Chilcken, Payless Shoe Source, etc. One of the buildings in this row of shops was a former Thriftimart Supermarket. It has gone through a series of tenants, including Wherehouse Music, etc.

As a last note, this entire corner was flooded when the Baldwin Hills Dam failed in 1963, but that is another story.
