I was recently introduced to the work of Australian Photographer Olive Cotton. Here I offer this homage from my local reed beds, but it's her words that will resonate with many of us.
“Light brings a subject to life. That’s the main thing about all my photographs, the light no matter what it’s of. That’s what draws me to take a photograph.”
Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dare
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools," said I, "You do not know:
Silence, like a cancer, grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you.
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon God they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
And the words that it was forming
And the sign said,
"The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls."
And whispered in the sound of silence
After posting one of my favourites from Tremenheere Sculpture Garden today (see previous post >>), it reminded me of another favourite which only works as a video, as it moves.
The video starts slowly and get exciting about halfway through.
Designed by Penny Saunders with help from sculptural engineer Rob Higgs.
Pretty good activity in the waves at Natural Bridges State Beach in Santa Cruz, California. Tourists were getting wet.
This is the second of the pair of London images. Opted for a lot shorter exposure on this one this to be able to catch some outlines of people on the bridge and show just a touch of movement in the restless sky.
I wanted to do the same with this one, as the previous and make sure that I caught no technology which, I hope, will allow the viewer to be able to place the image in any period of history, be it now or in yester-year.
Thanks for looking, feedback is always appreciated.
I really like white and red recently <3

There are cargo ships in the distance. I wouldn't want to be on one in these conditions – just a walk on the beach is an invigorating challenge.
This jaguar was pacing nervously, moving too quickly to get a clear shot of, but I'm pleased with this because I moved the camera along with his head, and managed to focus on his left eye. Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago, Illinois -- May 9, 2016
Continuation of the 100 year hands. They are always on the move, not only to keep arthritis and pins and needles at bay, but also to emphasise her lively words.
(Much better large.)
“For you made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you.” - St. Augustine of Hippo
St. Augustine’s famous prayer resonates with the very essence of our existence. He reminds us that God crafted us for a higher purpose, destined to seek fulfillment beyond the confines of this world. Ever restless, our hearts yearn for a deeper connection—a divine rest only found in our spiritual journey. Augustine’s words serve as a guiding light, urging us to seek meaning and purpose. We will only find true and everlasting rest in our Creator.
Wondering when we'll be going out again to enjoy the unseasonably mild temperatures.
100 x: The 2024 Edition | Image 3/100
Caloundra, Queensland. This shot on the beautiful Sunshine Coast looks from the headlands that define the start of Moreton Bay to the south. On the right is Kings Beach and beyond some of the traditional older inner area of what is now the City of Caloundra although much has been redeveloped in recent years.
The Glasshouse Mountains peak through on the horizon line with Mt. Beerwah, the highest on the right. The beach on the left was once the location of the Pumicestone Passage (northern) bar and part of Bribie Island, but following storms and cyclones and being naturally infilled, is offset now by several breaks through the island further south. It is a continuous beach for a distance and part of the "mainland". The passage runs around the back of the left beach and in front of the high rise buildings right down to near Beachmere.
This week, the Queensland Government has announced funding measures to shore up and minimise the new gaps that have appeared in Bribie Island following the ocean break through which are threatening the once quiet Golden Beach (where the high rise buildings are on far left) with becoming a surf beach and subsequent damage to coastline, road and even housing if allowed to continue. The beaches that are visible here are fronted by the northern end of Moreton Bay and the Pacific Ocean and are therefore surf beaches subject to the vagaries of tide and weather.
Much further south on the Gold Coast, major work is continuing to restore severely eroded beaches following Cyclone Alfred and other bad weather earlier this year.
Things will be quiet from me for a few days while I catch up on flickr comments and other domestic duties.

This breath is not smooth, this mind not still.
The dust is heavy beneath the bed.
Even in the storm, I sit and breathe.
New life is near. I bow my head.
... like undulating ripples in the water
I took this image a while ago last spring, but have been playing with the processing, trying to find the right feel
2.6.2015. The harbour wall at Sennon has been battered by the Atlantic swell for over a hundred years.
Cape Cornwall can be seen in the top left corner of the image.
I was fascinated by the patterns and colours revealed during the slow shutter speed.
